Personally, I love the fact that she’s 50. I know 35 year olds that don’t have the mobility, stamina or mindset to do half the stuff she does. Maybe one day we’ll stop limiting people—especially women—by their age.

Absolutely right. Why the fuck should she stop doing what shes always done - and clearly enjoys - just because her age and status as a wife and mother are supposed to dictate other wise. She complained in 1992 that one of society's biggest problems is ageism and its proved right for her. Id say about 70% of the criticism I read of her all stems from her age. The other 30% is probably totally legit, but criticising her for her age sucks.

Exactly! That's what I was attempting to say a few posts before. Because she's 50 she's somehow supposed to stop doing what she does and do what? bake cookies?

The stamina and the focus this woman has is amazing. Just imagine if we all lived that way. Most people throw their hands up in the air and give up. Most people are too afraid of not being good enough, of not pleasing the right people, hell most people are afraid of their own dreams. I mean come on, she's not the best out there (singing, acting, dancing, whatever) but that never stopped her. But instead of taking pause and thinking, wow that's great, hard work does pay off. People feel the need to knock her down instead. She's smart and yet people criticize her for that as well. She's been in the business this long with mediocre talents but she works damn hard and is courageous enough to try different things. Plus she's juggling marriage and three kids (And her husband and kids sound like a pain in the ass) and she takes on different projects like writing books or directing films. Whether the final product is good or not, she's fucking trying, knowing very well that everyone is ready to crucify her.

Finally, before I get raked over the coals by the naysayers, I'm not a hardcore fan. There's some stuff of hers I hate. Evita is the only movie I've ever walked out of the theatre from. Awful in my opinion. I only became interested after I saw her live...her live shows kick some serious ass.

I think the video is easily one of her best from the last 10 years!

I just love how literal the "Grab a boy, grab a girl" part is! biggrin

And for sure the best choreography Madonna had since "Human Nature"...

I have to ask this question: what does the youth of today see in Justin Timberlake?? He is so unattractive to me. It's like he needs to spend some time in the sun or something. And it's not like he's this bad boy.. leading the youth to corruption: he's a friggin mama's boy trying to be all cool, but when push comes to shove, he can't stand alone! I'd actually have more respect for him if he were a bad boy--or at least I could understand the attraction a bit more for a "rebel" of sorts. I just don't understand why people think he's hot?? It's a mystery to me. Johnny Depp= HOT! Justin= confused Lenny Kravitz=HOT! Justin= confused Javier Bardem=HOT! Justin= confused Anthony Keides=HOT! Justin= confused And PRINCE=HOT! Justin= confused razz

As far as Madonna.. I say more power to her if she wants to take her son--Justin for a walk-about to save the world.

Edited except I just don't like Justin! lol

Well, no comment on JT except for the fact that I actually liked "My Love" and "Sexyback", so I don't understand all of the hate for him, exept from the Janazis, which is getting tired.

As far as the Madonna vs. Janet thing (which is beyond tired), let's see...a few points...

1)People aren't tired of Janet dancing around trying to look "sexy", they are tired of her talking about her vagina in detail. It's not that we think she's too "old" for it, but that with age, usually you get some sort of class that a vulgar 21 year old doesn't have. Janet never developed that. She'll be 50 still masturbating on her records. Boring.

2)As far as her dancing is concerned, Janet has always looked like a robot to me. I don't understand the appeal in 10 people standing in a line and doing some stupid over-choreographed, soulless routine just because "it looks cool". Yeah, it looked good back in '86, and '89. Yeah, people were still talking about it with "If", but by 2008, it is so beyond tired. Plus, it's dancing. I'll never understand why people bring up dancing when talking about a musical artist; I don't NEED to see Janet Jackson dance to buy her record.

3)I used to be a HUGE Janet Jackson fan for the longest time; she began to lose me with All For You, and Discipline was the first Janet album I didn't buy. I realized that she has nothing to say, and that she never has. She's just always been a mouthpiece for somebody else, and that really kinda bummed me out. Ever read a Janet interview? Absolutely nothing. Who cares.

4) Thank God Madonna doesn't "get" hip-hop. 4 minutes isn't a great, or even good song, but it's on the same level with "Feedback" and "Touch My Body", so shrug

5) And as far as the "institutionalized racism", there have been times when Janet outsold Madonna, and Madonna was considered "too old". Was it "racism" when RN1814 outsold Like a Prayer? Was it racism when Erotica was outsold by Janet?

What I don't understand is why people slam Janet, but give Madonna a pass all the time? It's OK for a scantily clad Madonna to gyrate or pose spread eagle, but Janet is criticized--and then advised by critics and fans alike to give up on trying to be sexy--even though she's what nearly 10 years YOUNGER than Madonna? It's OK for Madonna to CONTINUE to bite-off the hottest producers of the moment, but when Janet tries to do it, she's not creative enough--or she's not responsible for her own success. Oh.. but she's responsible for her failures; that's for sure.

Believe it or not, I don't mean any disrespect to Madonna. I say, she can do what she wants. And I don't want to start a fan-war. I just don't understand why the very same people, criticizing Janet yet supporting Madonna, when I really can't see all that much difference between the two except Madonna is nearly a DECADE older and white "pop."

Don't get me wrong, if Madonna wants to continue her quest to look like Faye Dunnaway with the plastic surgery, and dance around--doing the same thing she's done for years-- a la Mick Jagger-- more power to her if she can do it, and it sells.

But, why can't Janet if that's what she chooses to do?

I do think it's this sort of twisted "institutionalized" racism that is going-on.. even with Justin's popularity and for sure Madonna's. They both have benefited from the black community, and it seems what they do is more acceptable or something?

I don't get it. mad sad

P.S. Concerning the choreography, Madonna looks like a ballet dancer trying to dance "urban," for lack of a better word. She's always looked awkward to me or too "pop" for my taste.

I'm sorry, but Janet is slammed for everything under the sun, but at least Janet can dance. To me, regarding dance Madonna is just a step above Celine Dion. Now I will give Madonna the "nod" for superior flexibility and yoga skill. And I'm sure Madge was a wonderful ballet/contemporary dancer back in the day. But for hip-hop.. it's Janet all the way, baby. Madonna just doesn't get that "hip-hop" is more than dance: it's a culture just like Salsa or Flamenco is a culture. And the same goes for the wannabe Justin.

For the record, I have NEVER been a fan of Justin Timberlake's persona!
His attitude in some situations hasn't helped, but regarding his sex-appeal, it's still a resounding, "I don't get it."

Edited the rest because I don't want to spoil people's fun! lol

I read the rest of the thread, and I agree. I'm just frustrated concerning Janet.. But this isn't the thread to elaborate on my feelings about why Janet isn't getting the play I think she deserves. lol

Suffice to say, I don't really see that much difference between Madonna, Janet and even Justin as far as their "music" is concerned. I don't think one song is necessarily better than the other, for instance. Plus, they are all the same type of artists. Now... sales there is a huge difference.

Why do people keep assuming that Madonna never gets criticized for her actions rolleyes I just don't get it.She's has been brutally criticized since she came on the scene! In 1983,they dismissed her and predicted she would be a one-hit wonder. In the early 90s,they basically crucified her talking openly and honestly about sex.She experienced a huge media backlash in 1993.In 2003,she made some anti-Bush remarks and paid a huge price.Even now, there are many people who are criticizing her, saying she's too old and should retire.

The difference between the criticism Madonna receives and the criticism Janet receives is the way both of them deal with it.Madonna is simply smarter than Janet.Madonna knows how to survive a backlash. She knows how to re-invent herself, change the topic, and keep people interested in her.Look what happened after the Sex/Erotica backlash of 1993.She bounced back with an excellent album ('Bedtime Stories),a few top-notch,melodic singles ("Secret" and "Take A Bow") and successfully put the focus back on the THE MUSIC,where it belongs. She then went on to career-defining projects like 'Evita' and 'Ray Of Light',which gained her even more respect and critical acclaim.By the late 90s,nobody was even talking about her early-90s backlash anymore. Also, look what happened in 2003.Madonna was being heavily criticized for 'American Life'.They said she was over,washed-up,finished.What does she do? She launches a tour that becomes the highest-grossing tour of the year.By late 2004,nobody was even thinking about the poor sales of the album. That's what I'm talking about when I say that Madonna is smarter than Janet. She doesn't let anything or anybody bring her down. She always winds back on top, despite the occasional setback.

Believe it or not, I don't mean any disrespect to Madonna. I say, she can do what she wants. And I don't want to start a fan-war. Actually,I don't think Madonna is doing "the same thing she's done for years".There's always something new and fresh about what she does. Her new album features production by "hot" producers, but the last time she made an album like this was in 1994.Some artists become lazy and complacent. They basically make the same album over and over.Madonna doesn't.This new album won't sound anything like the last one, just like the last one didn't sound anything like the previous one.

I do think it's this sort of twisted "institutionalized" racism that is going-on.. even with Justin's popularity and for sure Madonna's. They both have benefited from the black community, and it seems what they do is more acceptable or something? I don't get it. mad sad

This is simply untrue.Janet actually has alot of support from the black community. She gets far more support from the black community than Madonna ever will. Her problems don't have anything to do with race. Her problem is that, people are tired of what she's offering. She's gotta try something new...go in a new direction....try something bold and unique. The poor sales of 'Discipline' should be a wake-up call for her.Her career is far from over, but she truly needs to do something different.

Concerning the choreography, Madonna looks like a ballet dancer trying to dance "urban," for lack of a better word. I'm not even going to respond to each one of your comments because as I said, I don't want to engage in a battle over Madonna v Janet. As I was so politely reminded, that's NOT what this thread is about. In fact, as you can see, I deleted my original post (except for my question about Justin) because I could see how my words were inflammatory. But I guess you quoted from a quote which had NOT been deleted.

Suffice to say, you win, and I don't care! biggrin This is your thread, and you can have your fanship, but I don't necessarily agree with you. I agree that I should have never posted in this thread in the first place because I've NEVER been a huge Madonna fan--mainly because I just don't like her music as well as I like Janet's. I don't like her videos as well as I like Janet's. And I think Janet's is prettier sooooo razz . lol lol I don't like the way Madonna dances. I don't like the way Madonna acts on-screen or off. And I don't like the way she looks (Janet's plastic surgery being much better, for example) except she is in great shape for a person of ANY age. I'll give her that.

I was just frustrated because I don't think Janet has been treated fairly regarding a variety of situations, but I'll let it go at that. The majority of "people" are tired of Janet. Fine. So be it. And Janet's current sales suck comparatively speaking, so I guess the anti-Janet movement feels validated. Unfortunately, all of us "people" liking Janet just have bad taste in music. Maybe we should take some classes in "pop star" appreciation? Obviously we are missing why Madonna is just so much her superior.rolleyes Of course, Madonna is such an artiste, and so enlightened, too! rolleyes I guess we are so stupid we don't see it? I'm not sure classes will help all that much on that one, but I'm not going to sweat it. I'll get by somehow. wink

Yes, celebrate your victory, if you will! I don't want to rain any further on your parade! As I was told, Madonna v Janet is a "tired" discussion. So I took the HINT, and bowed-out. I get it: you all really like your Madonna! lol Well you can have her--artiste and all. So what's the point of discussing anything? There's really nothing to discuss.

"Workin' up a sweat/ that's what music's for," Madonna sings on "Heartbeat," the pumped-up fourth song on Hard Candy, her latest album, due April 29. Indeed, the pop diva makes good on her promise – singing her way through an hour of Euro-flavored dance tracks infused with retro, house beats. PEOPLE.com took an advanced listen – and can reveal five fast facts about Madonna's latest.

• On "Spanish Lesson," produced by the Neptunes, Madonna does, in fact, go bilingual, offering liberal translations of phrases like, "Entiendo," which she says means, "I get it," over a funked-up flemenco guitar riff. (Literal translation: "I understand.")

• Kanye West offers a fast-paced rap on "Beat Goes On," the eighth track, breathlessly rapping, "I think I'm going to try something new."

• The singer indulges her choral side on the album-closer "Voices," which features production by Justin Timberlake, Timbaland and Nate "Danjahandz" Hills. The song builds to a dark, cinematic crescendo, as the album closes with one lone tone.

• Madonna sings, "You always have the biggest heart/ though we're 6,000 miles apart," on "Miles Away," a direct allusion to living and working far away from hubby Guy Richie.

• Madonna really wants you to dance: Two songs – opening track "Candy Store" and "Beat Goes On" – feature overt calls to action. "Gotta get up off your seat," she sings on the latter, bolstered by the Neptunes's production and West's rapping.

"Euro-flavored dance tracks infused with retro, house beats"

I've read that yesterday and I thought this sounds more like a description of her last album. So, again, I'm really excited about the other tracks. I anticipate the most for Dance 2Night and Beat Goes On!

btw, although i'm in a prince forums, but I say it anyway: i dislike the spelling with numbers. it's cheeky. and it doesn't fit to the rest of her body of work.

Love Tired to Welcome Me and Love Profusion hits?

nah but she always throws in a 'paradise not for me' or a 'lament' or something totally unexpected....one can hope

true i'm trying to think what theme the tour is going to be

Confessions had the love, world, fame, party theme

RIT was sin and redemption

DWT the characters of Madonna's head

GS Loss of Innocence

BAT Extascy

i don't see much of theme in Who's That Girl or Virgin but there were some def statements.

ok i'm kinda hoping the new record flops so the tour has lots of oldies, and some old album cuts. a la RIT, American Life.

Judging by the response and reviews so far, it doesn't look like it's going to flop.

And Madonna practically let us know she's not really going to do many songs from the 80s, so I can easily imagine like 11 songs from Hard Candy, and most of her "oldies" from ROL to COADF.

Rhondab

I just saw the video.

Madonna needs to sit her ass down. I actually laughed at this video.

She looks like some old chick tryin' too hard.

disbelief

and the song is awful.
