As far as being well-known, my interpretation from VH is that Prince set out to be a well-known superstar, while he (VH) rather focus on songwriting I guess.

As far as Van Hunt’s Popularity, that has little to do with it, if he wasn’t somewhat known this whole topic never would have got started.
