I like prince a lot and have a lot of his music but planet earth is
certainly nothing to brag about. I would take any of Van Hunt's solo cd over
the mess that is planet earth. Prince took a step back with planet earth
considering he put out a good one in 3121. As far as the whole dissing van hunt thing to each his own. If you like him fine if you don't life goes on and i refuse to get a big pissing contest about his music.

the only truth to come out of this is that Van Hunt is not a good musician, his music has meant nothing in the grand scheme of things, and he's just like the new jack artists who think they're so much better than what's come before them. plus, he doesn't seem too smart. case in point... he's 40 years old and writing a myspace blog bashing Prince. It doesn't get any more lame than that. He's an artist nobody has ever heard of and nobody ever will. He's accomplished nothing. Just a typical new jack artist with no respect for others and more ego for talent. Maybe he's just mad that Prince has actual fan sites with thousands of people actively talking about him, even though Prince is trying to sue us at every turn. We talk about him and his music, past present and future. Van Hunt has like what, 10 people on okayplayer (another lame hip hop/r&b website filled with uneducated bottomfeeders) talking about him? I have to laugh. Hurray, lets go buy a Van Hunt CD and put it along side our proud r&b artists like Souja Boy. Two groundbreaking artists! Turn on BET, ya'll!

Van Hunt is Van Pissed! He just can't leave it alone, so I had to put him in his place several times.

Lou: You make a few key errors in your assessment of Prince. First, you base your opinion off of his released tracks. He's so prolific and writes so many songs, he simply can't release them off. It's silly to think a prolific artist would write songs of all the same quality. Any true fan of music, and true fan of Prince knows that his best material is unreleased anyway.

And yes, you are no better than a modern r&b artist. For you to judge Prince, when you yourself are not a real artist or capable yourself of writing any great songs (you've never written one well crafted song) tells me all I need to know about you.

Thanks for trying, though.

All the best,
Lou

Van Hunt: he fact that you even refer to me as a "modern R&B artist" lets me know that you have no idea who i am OR what traditional/ modern R&B is.

and, i didn't bash Prince's songwriting. he no longer writes well-crafted songs. not that he can't. he doesn't even care to write good songs. they are just vehicles for his incredible musicianship and the "mission" that he's on. the fact that he CAN - AT WILL - write brilliant songs WHENEVER HE FEELS LIKE IT, is the greatest compliment to his true talent.

Van Hunt: and that's why you're on my page? because i'm wack? if you're going to pretend to be a real fan of the man, at least, be up on what he's up on. is that why i've been invited to his house several times to play my songs for him? that's why he comes to my shows? that's why he plays my albums? that's why he supports me AND my music? because i'm wack?

get a clue, Lou.

Lou: Prince throws parties for a lot of C-List "celebrities" and 2nd rate musicians. Shit, Lindsay Lohan is at his parties, it doesn't make her a great artist or a great actress. P Diddy is there too, and everyone knows he's worthless.

But I see that has deluded your mind to think you're more than what you are -- less than average, not even a real musician, barely an artist. I mean, who's heard of you? Three people who watched you on BET or something? What has your music ever accomplished, who has it touched? In other words, what has it meant to the world? What's your mark on it?

I think Prince was more of a musician than you could ever hope to be, even as far back as 1979 or 1980. Just because you can't compare in any way, you're a one trick pony, and your music is not a meaningful or special, don't get upset. It's really okay.

He keeps replying over and over so it's pretty obvious his ego is hurt. "But Prince invites me to his parties, that proves I AM IMPORTANT! I'm a great artist, look at me!" ROTFL. Give me a break. What do you think caused this whole thing? A few random people on the website don't like Van Hunt. Van Hunt reads it and he writes about how it hurts him so much, how he's so great, and how Prince isn't that great. Typical BS from a fake artist.

I just want to say that despite the fact that some of you here may not have liked Van Hunt's comments about Prince, he IS entiteled to his opinion on the man.

I find it quite irritating that there are some fans on here who probably like and respect Van Hunt but are now slaying him because of his comments. Can't you see past that? The man's music and the man's opinions are two seperate things.

As for Van Hunt's music, I own all of his work so far and I absoloutely LOVE him. His music is really soulful, beautiful and sometimes as funky as hell. I think the guy is an underrated artist and I have much time and respect for him.

Van - If you're reading this - I love your work and so do many others.

I have watched quite a few of Mr. Hunt's performances, and this muthafucker ain't about shit.

This fool trying to belittle Prince's talents because he got pissed at a few fans on a music forum is ridiculous.

Hey Van, instead of fast forwarding through Prince's guitar solos, you need to slow them down and study 'em, 'cause your playing leaves a little to be desired.

I've seen better acts on the streets playing for spare change.

Prince fags won't listen. They're so dumbassed they can't even hear great songs. At the end of a slow dance floored me when i first heard it and as i posted before. Van Hunts first two albums beat anything Prince has put out in 10 years. I'm a Prince fan but i share it with a sense of reality.

I only have Van Hunt's first album. Its ok. Nothing incredibly special about it at all. Some nice tunes and some utterly forgettable tunes too. To say that his album trumps something like the rainbow children is simply crazy. There is more thought, musicianship, and sophistication on that cd then Van Hunt will likely ever create

What they don't know is that 'their man', while he is an incredible talent and entertainer, he willed his biggest hits into being. Because he HAD to be a star. He no longer writes great songs because being a great songwriter was never his goal. Being relevant was/is. What they don't know is that Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Duke Ellington...THOSE are great songwriters. They wrote hundreds of them- consistently. Nary a dud in their entire career --- Van Hunt

So why the need to put down Prince? Instead of attacking the fans he attacks Prince. As if Prince doesn't still write good songs. Who is he to know what goes on in Prince mind to determine that Prince doesn't care about songwriting? "the dance" is not a good song? 3121? call my name? How has he determined that these aren't great songs and that Prince only cares about being relevant?

I guess he won't be getting anymore invites to Prince's house.

I support Van Hunt only because I understand his frustration. Remember, it must have also frustrated Prince to always be compared to Jimi Hendrix when he first started out.

I'm a big fan of VH music. I just think all this kind of odd because he's quite bold in coming out and saying his songwriting is better than Prince's. Not many musicians big themselves up like that and that is probably what is surprising. If Prince said that his guiter playing was better than so and so I would find that kind of tacky, even if its the doggone truth. But hey, gotta respect honesty.

VH music may be better than Prince's output in the last ten years, however we are talking about 1978 to the present, and my only thought is what will Van Hunt be like 10-15-20 years from now. If his songwriting skills peak and suffer will he regret all this. How would he feel if some new buck 10 years from now criticize him if his later outputs are not that good. It's all good now, but can he handle a taste of his own medicine. Time will tell. GO VH!

I've never heard any of his music but I have seen his name brought up from time to time here on the org. Since I've seen some of the cool orgers bring his name up, I figured I'd look for some of his stuff in the record store and had no luck. The fact that I can't find his stuff in my local record store makes me wonder if his stuff is actually good since a record stores like to keep the good stuff out. However, just because some of the cool orgers like him still doesn't mean that I might like him because very few people are as strict and rigid as me when it comes to music. I figured I'd take a chance though since good new music has become a desperate thing these days.

I didn't see any comments on the other thread that would really be harsh enough to piss him off so I'll ask some questions about his music. If the comments are what I want to hear, I'll give him a huge compliment. However, if the comments aren't what I want to hear, I'll give him a reason to be pissed. lol

I got the impression from the other thread that he plays instruments. Well, does he have real drums and bass on the records? If he has drum machines, are they strong sounding drum machines or are they the same shit hop sounding ones that everyone else is using these days? And also, MOST IMPORTANTLY, does he ever speed the tempo up faster than all this sissified ballerina tempoed music that has dominated for the last 15 years? If he does, I give him the highest praise possible and will definately be on the lookout for his music to purchase. If not, he can kiss my ass just like the rest of the current artists.

Why don't you just listen for yourself: http://www.myspace.com/vanhunt
You might like what you hear wink ! I really dig him and I am no fan of artists who are doing smooth sounding ballads all the time lol.
