Sly Stone gave me music that has changed my life forever and he coould have came out onstage with one leg and a kickstand and I would still have lost my mind over seeing him. I am so glad with everything he's been through that he is still with us.

Just like you, I know Sly's music changed me. I should know by now that folks (espcially on Prince.org) can't simply appreciate shit for what it used to be and for what it is today. The wrong reaction to this is what's gonna keep Sly in a reclusive state. Either way, I won't be mad if Sly never appears again. I'm just glad to be a witness to his return in 2006.

It is the one sad thing about the whole Grammy show. Since it first started, the world has changed so much, that those who want to do tributes to artists that they grew up with don't have a clue about how to approach it. Let's not forget that this is the same generation that no longer knows how to tell time by a manual clock. Don't hope for a whole lot.

I would honestly like to be unaffected... but it's real damn hard. It's like confirming the existence of Santa Clause and saying, 'Wow! He's fat, boring and wearing waayy too much red" Shit, I'm gonna make my kids get up and watch it before school in the morning... just so they know he does exist.

I'm with you on that. I said this on the Grammy thread and I'll say it again. His mohawk was more rock and roll than all these new acts that claim to be rock artists, hell even hip hop. He still had attitude to be able to show up for a few minutes and then up and leave. I ain't mad at him. With a tribute like that, I'd say hi and bye too. No matter what's happened in his life, no one will argue that he deserves his props for all that he's contributed to music and our lives. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Wish they woulda let the band cool out so I could HEAR what Sly was playin' on the keyboard... I couldn't even hear his riffs.
Did they drown him out intentionally??? It was like We Are The World up there!

This is so true and so well written. I would take it a step beyond this and say, not only do the artists wanting to do the tribute, not know how to approach it, but neither do the Grammy/Marketing/Whatever Suit who organizes stuff like this. Now just because we were hating on the performance does not mean, it wasn't great to see Sly, because it was, it was just sad to see the man who inspired so many, walk out, sing a few lines off key and walk out.

Based on how he may currently feel about the business, we have no idea how much intestinal fortitude it may have taken for him to even do that. Just be happy he's still with us and healthy even if he never hits a lick at a snake again musically. He's put his work in and then some. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

me too... sly's music opened up an avenue for newness in music and a uniquely innovative evolution in sound... "a musical note to sly from me..in 2006" as i "danced to the music" you me made me realize i too was one of the "everyday people." i listened with love when you said "stand" and i didn't want to leave until you took me "higher" and just like you, I identified with "hot fun in the summer time" and you sang, "thank you (falettinme be-mice-elf-agin) then you gave me (and many) the confidence and boldness to embrace the truth that "everybody is a star" and voiced to us to appreciate and realize it's all just "a family affair."... and i sang along with you "if you want me to stay" again and again praying that you'd never go away... I love you Sly Stone...you will always be my star . Thank you for showing face tonight at the grammy's please come back again... a fan and admirer from the inside of my heart.. i pray the angels will watch over you always. ..."opalstar" wild flowers grow on their own...but die quickly when held too tight ...some wild flowers will defy the rules of nature [Edited 2/8/06 23:54pm] i love you for who you are, not the one u feel u need to be.

I thought his voice sounded okay. Too bad that song's more of a jam than a vocal showpiece anyway. Another song might have required more of him.
Shit, he was better than half the other fools up there singing his songs. Sure it was a little disappointing, and he doesn't exactly seem well, but I still think he was the coolest guy there. I can't imagine what pressure that must be for a guy like that (or anyone who performs for a billion people). I'm amazed it happened at all. He obviously wanted to make a splash with that outfit & hair. I wonder if he wanted to do more. How bout Randy Jackson? I can just hear the Sly comparisons from Simon to American Idol contestants on their bad nights. Check this song out at:

"Sly is still high"... But it just good to see him.. He always make me smile... Everyday People is my absolute favorite song.. Simple, yet meaniful lyrics... Really didn't care for the tribute.... Waaaaayyy tooo many people on that stage... But again, it was just good to see him... SLY!!!!

I don't blame any of the mediocrity of that performance on Sylvester Stewart. First and foremost... there were way too many folks on that stage. The Family Stone (sans Larry) was there but nobody knew it because of all of the people on stage. If that was indeed Sly's last public appearance, then I blame NARAS for putting all those bastards on stage at the same time. I like a lot of those folks but... it wasn't the proper time place nor manner for them. This is the re-emergence of Sly and the Family Fuckin' Stone... you need to trim the fat... and focus on the goal... I'm so pissed right now... Hell, if I was Sly I woulda walked off mid-performance too. I fell asleep when I got home and missed it. Who was on the stage with him? He walked out? . .
