I have a question for those of you who feel that Sly's performance should be accepted. Just because an artist has reached the heights that Sly Stone has, And has been an inspiration to generations od musicians that have came after him. Should we accept just any kind of performance from them even if they are rarely seen in public or hardly ever perform anymore? I'm sorry, I don't mean to offend anyone but the Sly Stone I saw last night was uninspired. I think that rather then give a performance like that, He should've turned down the Grammy's request when they asked him to play. Instead of performing, He should've just came out and had words. That would've been better then what we saw last night.

What you saw last night was not Sly's fault. The man who dominated Woodstock with Jimi Hendrix was sharing a stage with motherfucking Ciara, Will.i.am and Joss Stone... all of whom were given more stage time. The man re-emerges with 85 % of the band that catapulted him to fame and he gets that lousy ass re-introduction to the world? Like I said on another board... time should have stood still for a few seconds.

This is my point... and your opinion is what I think is wrong with the music consuming public when it comes to musical legends. You just witnessed a musical god on stage last night. A man who doesn't HAVE to prove shit anymore because he did it from 1967 through 1973. Instead of accepting his appearance for what it is... you knuckleheads come forth with a "What has he done for me lately?" attitude.

Do you want me to tell you what kind of inspiration do you truly expect from a 62 year old man, whose life has been affected by severe drug abuse and a stroke? The inspiration came from the fact that he showed up to be seen after 13 years and to perform after 30 years. That's your fucking inspiration RIGHT THERE.

P.S. and for those who are hung up on the mohawk and gold lame suit... Do your research and you'll realize that Sly was never an ordinary dresser. Wore the biggest afro wigs and some of the most outlandish garb in the history of music... but he was still the shit.

Sly had no idea of where he was yesterday night, or why he was there.

Sly's had a rough go of it lately. After his departure from music, he spent a few years in the Street Fighter Tournament. Here he is at fighting weight.

But a chance meeting with Jared from Subway and Randy Jackson influenced him to get a Fobi pouch and go on Atkins. Then the Grammys called and the rest, as they say, is history.

I would suggest searching youtube for "Sly Stone." If it isn't up there yet, it probably will be in a few days.

It was a bit sad, but exciting, too. I watched it again, there were moments of Sly, he almost danced at the end, kind of rocked the crowd for a second. He just needed a more singable song. There was nothing for him to do but say "Higher!" "Fire!"

Still, it's the only thing from the show that really stuck with me.

Yeah, give it a few days is my advice, it will be there. Fuck, Fantasia (typo) from American Idol was on it. She has lots of fans that upload probably any little thing she appears on, same with Joss Stone and all those other "artists paying tribute."

And on another note..I suppose my true feelings about Sly's performance last night is this:

I felt bad because Sly deserved much better than last night. I'd hate to see his legacy remembered like that, and I sure hope it isn't remembered for last night's "tribute." sad

confused I was completely confused...

...and I guess I was mistaken. I thought the original idea was for all the newbies to do their little tribute...and then get off the stage during the Sly and the Family Stone Reunion...

I certainly wasn't expecting Sly to walk out in the middle of 50 people, and start singing and playing...I'm surprised he actually came on in the middle of all that...maybe I misunderstood....

If you didn't look hard, you would have missed any Family Stone members...there were certainly no introductions...they were put way back in the crowd....behind the so-called "stars".....

This is why nobody buys CD's anymore, and I'm PAYING $12.00 a month for SATELLITE RADIO because I can hear the REAL SLY on the RADIO in my car now. THE GRAMMY's are ALL PAID FOR. I KNOW. I'VE SEEN what goes on BEhind the SCENES. Well guess what JOSS, Nobody's BUYING IT.. YOU can put that in your FIONA APPLE and SMOKE IT>

I thought Joss Stone was pretty good boxed

She has a pretty good voice, but I think Viacom has some stock in her, shes on VH1 and MTV all the time. This is a SLY Stone tribute, lets get some singers up there with some history and who can really pay a fitting tribute. Maybe their oint was to introduce new fans, that's fine, but why start off with Joss Stone? She was born in 1985 probably. She doesnt remember Sly.

I think they knew Sly might bolt, so they wanted some extra star power onstage just in case. I maintain Sly's performance was as good as anyone else's in that tribute.

We do not know what type of shape Sly is in. It may have taken a lot for him to do the little bit he did. People say he looked high or whatever but the curvature of his spine may be causing him tremendous pain. We just don't know. I guess it's best to bash someone without knowing the truth. I truly believe his performance should be accepted. It was worth watching the horrible spectacle the Grammys have become to get a glance of him, performance or not. I don't know how anyone expected to hear hhis voice anyway with dozens of no-singing bastards drowning him out.
You do have a point. If for health reasons or whatever,This was the best sly could perform, I guess we all have to accept it. A friend of mine just told me that back in the day, Sly had this thing about bright lights. He said that at a concert he went to, Sly came out and played a few bars of "Dance To The Music" stopped and said "You Know What? These M***%*FG Lights Are Too Bright!" And walked off the stage and didn't come back. There were enough bright lights last night to light up an entire city. Perhaps that was his problem I don't know. I do hope this isn't the last time he makes a public appearance.

Today Sly's site says "Here's a Phattadatta exclusive for you - Sly made his impromptu exit from the Grammies because he's played the old stuff already, and now it's time for the new stuff, stay tuned"

However, I'm sure if there was new stuff, they would have made arrangements for him to showcase it. Guess time will tell.

Word was his rehearsal was much the same, so, like you say, I think they hedged their bets and felt the show should roll on with or without him.

I agree that it wasn't the best thing for Sly to have walked off-stage before the end, but, as someone else said on this thread, this is 'Sly being Sly'. He has always been highly unpredictable.

Also, I would judge very little about Sly's current state or future plans from that performance (though I suspect like others that he is unfortunately still at least somewhat 'high'.) There could some proper gigs and maybe a new album or this could be it.

I wouldn't be surprised if there isn't either a finished or in progress new album, but Lord knows what that might be like. I listened to 'There's a Riot Goin' On' today and he sounded messed up even back in 1971, though still great. I am not anticipating a Brian Wilson-level comeback, as I doubt Sly is physically and mentally capable of a gruelling tour. I also doubt he has the good management and private support network Brian Wilson has to keep him going. I only mention Brian as he too has been through many years of drug abuse/mental illness and has mounted a successful comeback. I think Sly needs a great new young band (not the Family Stone, too much history and most definitely no rappers) to fire him up again (if his creativity ain't too far gone).

It would just have been so awesome if Sly had appeared on the Grammies in better shape and really led his band (with no useless guest-stars), shown real control and ability and begun a real comeback from there.

Still, making your first public appearance in many years to such a huge audience takes a load of guts and I think he looked pretty good (loved the mowhawk and shades - he looks sorta like a cousin of George Clinton and Bootsy Collins these days and that's appropriate).

Where Sly goes from here is anybody's guess, but I think some attempt at a comeback is definitely in progress. Let us hope things proceed more smoothly from here ...

But wasn't it just so great to see him again!!!

But a couple of years after Riot, he did Fresh, and he didn't sound messed up at all.

I totally agree that for a guy who's shied away from the public for 20 years, appearing on the Grammys must have been terrifying and he showed huge balls for doing it. You could see beginning with a club appearance here or there.

I wouldn't write him off, even now...especially now he got a little taste of performing again.

Nah, you haven't seen Sly. You've only seen what's left of him after the drugs. The man I saw wasn't fit to be out there performing. That's why they drowned him out and surrounded him with other musicians.

I was embarassed for him more than anything else but that's more of a reflection on me. I'm sure it took a lot for him to get out there, and looking back on it I'm happy for him. So what if he doesn't ever regain any of his former ability. He's given enough to last a lifetime.

I forgot to mention the "tribute". It was terrible. None of the singers did any justice to the songs, but the musicians were okay. Ciara's dress and WillIam's dancing were the highlights I'm sorry to say. neutral Van Hunt and Joss Stone were disappointing but I wouldn't write them off until I hear their own material.
