What you saw last night was not Sly's fault. The man who dominated Woodstock with Jimi Hendrix was sharing a stage with motherfucking Ciara, Will.i.am and Joss Stone... all of whom were given more stage time. The man re-emerges with 85 % of the band that catapulted him to fame and he gets that lousy ass re-introduction to the world? Like I said on another board... time should have stood still for a few seconds. This is my point... and your opinion is what I think is wrong with the music consuming public when it comes to musical legends. You just witnessed a musical god on stage last night. A man who doesn't HAVE to prove shit anymore because he did it from 1967 through 1973. Instead of accepting his appearance for what it is... you knuckleheads come forth with a "What has he done for me lately?" attitude. Do you want me to tell you what kind of inspiration do you truly expect from a 62 year old man, whose life has been affected by severe drug abuse and a stroke? The inspiration came from the fact that he showed up to be seen after 13 years and to perform after 30 years. That's your fucking inspiration RIGHT THERE. P.S. and for those who are hung up on the mohawk and gold lame suit... Do your research and you'll realize that Sly was never an ordinary dresser. No. It was pretty clear that that performance was going nowhere, he wasn't in the mood, and just up and left EVERYBODY hanging. None of the guests had their mikes on, and those that were on were on at a minimum (thanks to the consistently crappy abilities by the annual Grammy technicians), so when he left, it was awkward as hell. I'm sitting there watching this with my husband (who is an accomplished session and touring/concert musician in his own right), and we were just like, WTF???? It was a complete train wreck---but oddly enough we still enjoyed it for the freakniess factor of Sly alone! It was tragic and exciting and entertaining all at the same time.... | |

was shocked 2 see him show up 4 his overdue Grammy props, yet my thoughts & feelings were very mixed. his health payed a heavy duty price from the past, yet his great music will 4 ever last...I love U Sly... | |

My thoughts:
As a sly stone admirer I couldn't wait. When he came out with the silver outfit and that high ass mohawk (that picture posted on this thread doesn't give the actual height of the mohawk justice) he exceeded any expectations I had. That was until I noticed his "hunched back" as you people have referred to it. That bummed me out. I remember thinking "why isn't he doing anything" as the music was going on and he was "playing" the keyboard at an inaudible volume. Then he tried to sing and um... the typical award show shitty audio guys issue hit right on cue, his mic wasn't turned up loud enough. That ruined it. Fair or not to sly (totally not fair IMO) the performance is gonna leave a cloud oon any comeback he wants. I just hope it doesn't detour him and even if he doesn't have major label backing I hope he releases something. That's the only way to judge if he's "done" or not (as someon this board have so ignorantly stated). | |
