CrystalVault said: klaatu said: this song is about fun. You always have tocomplain about something. and then here we go again: the pre 96 songs!!!! Listen to Reflection for the "serious" lyrics! [This message was edited Fri Feb 27 5:55:47 2004 by klaatu] Yeah, we want the fabolous song-writing-skills of the pre-96-era back! Just listen to masterpieces like "Grafitti Bridge" , "Jughead" or "The Max" and you'll never hear anything else. And please do not think that songs like "Automatic", "I would die 4 U" or "It" are based on more than one chord! First...sorry I don't gush over everything he does. Second...when did I ever say that he's never done one chord songs before? If you actually read my post instead of having some kneejerk reaction, you'll see that in my analogy I said that I like the funk vamps from time to time...mixed in with well written songs. I never mentioned anything about "pre-96".....but if you want to take three songs from his catalog and insinuate that is all I like, feel free.

Not a bad performance. Prince has been in "smooth showman" mode for a while now and this performance was a reflection of that. I STILL like the old days better, but Prince has an unmistakable style that leaves a cooler-than-thou impression on the rest of the room. I'm not expecting much from him these days. The song is definately a JB throwback, but so be it. Prince has done enough to deserve to chill, I guess.

the only people who thought prince did a great job are the female contigent with comments like, soo sexy, etc. so forth. The song is ok at best, kinda lukewarm on its own without having to compare to his other work. I look forward to him moving past this tour & onto newer/fresher material hopefully instead of these old funk retreads.

EvilWhiteMale said: Goddamn, yet another lame and tame performance. The song is just so fucking terrible. I'm sure if he had chosen a better song, it would have been a much better show. But of course, is he capable of making a good song anymore? He can't even play one of his hits without fucking it up with some jazzy bullshit, or his own brand of self-sensorship. The only reason he got the applause that he did was because of who he was in the 80's. If he were a new artist and Musicology was his first single, he'd get the tamest response allowed and nobody would give a fuck about him.

Personally, I like the song very much. When I first starting listening to Prince it was as a child in the back seat of my parents car while"they" jammed to the beats. Then I remember at 12 still hearing the man on the bumpin' Funk station back in the day.
Musicology brings back them kind of memories for me.Where it was I first encountered the love of good music. The video brought it home for me and the full performance makes me wanna get funky too It's a classy performance.O.G style to me.I liked in the video how they let the o.g's into the gig and the street gear guy wasn't let in.that is just me tho' I am not the same as when I first started listening to prince and therefore don't expect him to.It was all go to me ! (and I'll yell it !) "We all got a space to fill"

herb4 said: Bsunshine said: This is embarrassing. For years I thought he said "CIRCUS CLOWN". I always thought it made more sense that way. Guess that was a blonde moment for me. But my question is what is a circus town? Also, isn't it sort of lame for Prince to rhyme the word "town" with itself? Actually, I think it is "Clown". Erm,it is clown , just checked, those lyrics are on the album sleeve , the lyrics to Prince's section of Push are written behind the tracklist on the back cover of the CD. UptownDeb said: There's something about the music that seems dated. I don't mean the old school references but the sound. Like he could've written this song 20 years ago. Aside from the "Tighten Up" sample, it just didn't sound very progressive to me. But, even with that said, I really liked the performance.
Ok, U got it right. That's exactly it..it soounded like a song that could have been on the Emancipation album, right? Actually, Jam of the Year was a better track than Musicology but it was nice to hear some new P music. But no, this is not the song to really bring him back to the forefront. I think he needs somethink like, I could never take the place of your man - another words, something a little more progressive. What do U guys think?

I didn't see the performance, but riddle me this, my friends. Compared to, say,
1. The "Sign O' The Times"/"Play In the Sunshine" performance on MTV 2. The "endorphinmachine" performance on the VH1 award show in 1994/5(?) 3. The "P Control" performance on the VH1 Style Awards 4. The "Come On" performance on Leno does this performance compare favorably? I KNOW I am spec-a-lay-tin big time, but I doubt it could. your thoughts? well, i think it was a pretty good performance. what was that gibson guy thinking? he looked like he was gettin some preachin words by P.
musicology is a great track when u r a fan, but it is no billboard record. i hope he gets some kind of norah jones/funk wave and people accept it as pure funk music that funks up their life, but thats all. it definitively isn't strong enough to do be breaker. BlueNote
