Prince brings in Mike Scott for Ellen Show

Prince flew Mike Scott to LA this weekend to join the band for the Ellen Show on Wednesday. No word yet on whether he will stay on for the tour or not.

Well, I'll never understand this guy - After touring for the last couple of years without another guitarist, what could have suddenly been so musically vital that he had to fly in Mike Scott? I'm surprised he didn't just ask Wendy to fill in unless they've busted up already...Should be interesting anyway...

Wendy is pretty busy with scoring right now so she may not just be waiting for Prince's call nod

Oh please NOOOOO !!!

Of all the guitarists P had over the years - hes the "weakest" imho and just soo boring....

He has such a great band right now - please let Mike Scott out of this!

If he really needs an guitarist then why it has to be Mike Scott !? What baout Wendy, what about Levi and of course what about JESSE JOHNSON - that would be a great addition to his current band....

Mike is an excellent Rhythm Guitarist. That is what he is known for around the MPLS area. Besides, he has been featured on numerous hits that Jam and Lewis have done over the past 5 or 6 years.

I would agree that he is probably the "weakest" but with him being a studio musician and knows most of Prince's back catalog (because he played the songs during the JOTY and NPS shows), it would make more sense for P to call someone that knows most of the material.

I don't think that will ever happen. Levi did P wrong with the whole TMBGITW promotion and the 1-800-NEW-FUNK promotion. If memory serves me correct, didn't Levi steal money and was sued by Prince?

No

Levi did bad promotion for TMBGITW - is that why it was No. 1 in several countries ? and his first number one single in about 10 years ?

Levi never stole any money. Fact is Prince never paid him for songwriting royalties for songs like Sexy MF and other songs and his work at NPG Records.

LEVI SUED PRINCE to pay him back all he as owed and they settled for a fraction of what he should have received so anyway. Poor Levi ...

So in a word - NO - he won't be back.

and anothe rthing

I hate Mike Scott

he is Prince's WORST EVER GUITARIST living OR dead

he was on Prince's WORST EVER TOUR so it made sense really to have a such a shit guitarist on such a shit tour I guess. It made the shit drummer look not so bad ...

Mike Scott has the most grating horrible distorted sounding guitar sound

and listening to ANY Jam of the Year show you can see he uses the exact same sound throughout the entire show, never even changes his sound for ballads or anything - a total loser - justy cranks it up and plays crap for the entire show

Man no wonder I threw all my JOTY bootlegs away.

If Mike Scott is on this tour I will be selling my tickets immediately.

I would rather stick my face in a vat of acid than hear that guitar sound again

Damn FunkyStrange - did Mike Scott steal your girlfriend or something? A little intense on the hate, don't ya think.

After reading some thread here a last year where people were rating Prince's band-members and who was great or not, I was talking to Michael B. after he, Sonny T., Tommy B., and Mr. Scott returned from Italy on the Giorgia tour. Told him about the thread I was reading and how there were many people rating Mike poorly as a guitarist.

I asked for his opinion on Mr. Scott's playing and how good he was. Michael B. said Mike is an outstanding guitarist and that is why he brought him into the fold for the Giorgia tour. Michael B. was musical director and had a choice of dozens to chose from to hire. But both he and Sonny wanted Mike. Now Sonny is the best pure musician Prince has ever had and is considered by people like Jimmy Jam to be a genius! Not to mention Prince has stated many times his admiration for Sonny and how Sonny was his hero.

So let's see, do I take the opinion of Michael B. and Sonny or the others in this thread? Gee, that's a tough one.

As far as that JOTY era band everyone is so critical of, I agree with that. But that has nothing to do with Mike Scott, blame Prince. Look who else were in those bands and what music Prince was putting out at that time. You had Kirk on drums, Kip and his brothers, and heavy doses of Larry and such. What Mike played and how he played it was totally up to Prince, he dictates everything. At one of the Paisley late nite shows however, Prince and Mike got into a sorta guitar duel. Everyone I know who saw it thought Mike won.

Bottom line is Mike is a highly accomplished musician and if he does join the band again, maybe we'll get to see Prince highlight him more. Funny, when I posted this info over at HQ, the response was all positive about Mike coming back. Go figure.

I have to agree - I always thought Mike Scott was pretty bland. I think Rhonda is pretty bland in a 'stay in the background' kind of way, but she plays bass well and a bass is necessary. The great thing about the ONA tour was that without a rythm guitarist, Prince had to do all the guitar work himself, and I love to see him play guitar. I fear that this tour could turn into a Jam of the Year type tour with Prince prancing about the stage and hardly picking up the guitar. On the ONA tour his singing was great, very focused, this tour I also fear he'll spend so much time working the crowd into a frenzy and running from one side of this round stage to the other, his vocals will suffer.

On the contrary, Mike is the one guitarist that stands on his own,
instantly recognizable and an amazing rhythm-guitarist.

Miko and Levi were great to some extent, Mike easily tops that.

smile

I don't think he needs to suffer from the Jam of the Year / New Power Soul tour - choices were competely Prince's. neutral
