If you are itching to hear Prince perform rock again like he used to then go sit yourself down and throw on Bambi or the Undertaker LP and enjoy it. If you are itching to hear Prince funk like he used to then go give Lady Cab Driver or Housequake a few spins. Face it people, the well has pretty much run dry creatively with Prince because he's just about done all there is he can do. If you don't like something that gets released, that's fine. But these "_____ sucks" reactions everytime the man moves are just as stale and lame as many of you claim his output and performances are. Whether you're for or against a cause, if you can't give 3 solid reasons why you feel the way you do about it then your opinion shouldn't be dignified with a response. I swear I learned this in grade school. So let's recap.

1. Prince is getting old and can't do everything he used to do.
2. It doesn't make sense to long for the old days when they are as tangible as putting in a copy of "_____" from back in the day.
3. Because of his age and output, there's not a whole lot of innovative creativity left within Prince.

In conclusion, stop frontin' in 2004. If Prince sucked so hard for the past 5 years you wouldn't have a username here.

Regardless of your feelings toward a particular song if someone else likes it ,cool.
I cannot tell you what to like and not like.

Hit songs are the work of record companies and not the artists.
If the company does not want you to have a hit ... you will not.I don't give a damn how good the song was.If you look at the top 10 chart who will be in the HOF 25 years from now ?

Outkast is the only "group" that has "IT" these days.

I agree with you, actually, except as highlighted above. One good reason is usually sufficient for me.

Prince doesn't suck. Period. He's the best performer around and has been for a long time.

I actually hate the fact I missed his interview with Leno. I heard after-the-fact that it was really good!

Not a bad performance. Prince has been in "smooth showman" mode for a while now and this performance was a reflection of that. I STILL like the old days better, but Prince has an unmistakable style that leaves a cooler-than-thou impression on the rest of the room. I'm not expecting much from him these days. The song is definately a JB throwback, but so be it. Prince has done enough to deserve to chill, I guess.

yup. this is dead on what i felt as well. pretty much a smooth cool 'showman' like performance. Not nearly as bad as some are saying...but also not nearly as good as some are saying. I guess it served its purpose i suppose...a safe middleground performance aimed straight for the Leno audience to promote the tour. 'ladies & gents, bring the kids and the dogs, fun for the whole family!'. Nothing wrong with that i guess. Probably a good time to hype the 'safe for the entire family' thing with all the amount of concern out there over the SuperBowl halftime show and all...

heh...a Prince concert is now safer for your kids than network television.

wow. has the world turned upside down or what?

Go figure.

And actually I think it probably will be a fun show for the whole family. I'd probably take my kids to it if it aint too expensive. Let them see some musicians play some popular tunes. I'm sure it'll have some fun, and some funky, and some groovyness.

But personally...myself... I actually yearn for and prefer an edgier (at least musically speaking) type of performance. I've seen quite enough (too many) performances of 'Prince the smooth slick showman'....I actually prefer to experience 'Prince the creative expressive musician'. I prefer the 'aftershow jam session' Prince who was REALLY into the moment and emotion of the essence of the song at hand. The spontaneous 'rehearsal jam session' Prince who seemed to be always searching for another more powerful way to express a song through his instruments...always trying to take it to the NEXT level. Now THATS the concert I'd still pay nearly ANYTHING to see.

again...the Leno show wasn't completely awful like many are saying...it was alright. it was the 'smooth showman' prince having some orchestrated fun to a James Brown-like groove. Nothing more nothing less. My jaw definitely didn't drop to the ground in amazement at the performance, but i then again I also didn't change the channel either.

??? where the hell did that come from ?

no. like i said the Leno Performance ok. it was cool. it was groovy. it wasn't earthshaterring.

what I personally would love to see is this...."'Prince the creative expressive musician'. I prefer the 'aftershow jam session' Prince ...The spontaneous 'rehearsal jam session' Prince who seemed to be always searching for another more powerful way to express a song through his instruments...always trying to take it to the NEXT level. Now THATS the concert I'd still pay nearly ANYTHING to see."

I am not saying i want him to re-live the old Prince stuff at all. I would love for him to break out some completely new powerful stuff and perform within it as a Musician. Look there are folks who are fans of Prince for his cool showman performer star style skills...I've got no problem with that....and there are also others, like myself, who became fans of Prince for his expressive emotive and often explosive musician skills. Sometimes the two Princes overlap and usually then everyone is happy to some extent. But theres no doubt that the Leno performance was the showman performer Prince...which is why I didn't go nuts for it like some. I can assure you that whenever i do see a performance of 'the musician prince' I will go bannanas.

and besides he's already done the 'dump' thing anyway...didn't you get NPS, Rave & much of Emancipation?

How many memorable performances do you ever really see on these late night variety shows? Next to none.

Prince actually gave the audience a real show with just that one song. I loved it.

I too enjoyed the performance. Hell he could've stood there and sang the alphabet for all I cared, and I still would have loved it. It probably would've been the best damn rendition of the alphabet ya ever heard. lol Seems like Prince is damned if does, and damned if he doesn't on this site, but we all are entitled to our opinions. Prince is just a human being like all of us (albeit a HIGHLY talented and gifted human being). But cut him some slack, he's a man, not some kind of muscial superhero.

You know, I just thinks it's a nice little funk tune and not too flashy for a change...I think Prince is just maturing...he hasn't lost his edge, he's just experimenting with things like lyrics and a message instead of his usual pyrotechnical dancing, guitar, etc.

You just wait, naysayers...he AIN'T lost the funk or whatever you want to call it. He's just channeling it in a new direction, as any true artist should.

He did what he had to do. He was fantastic, the performance, his attitude, throwing the Hohner, the swagger to the couch, confusing Mel Gibson, all cool as hell. Classic Prince.

The song's definately a grower too, it's not bad at all.

Just watched it again...sorry, still didn't do it for me, but I went out and purchased the Batman Soundtrack for $8.99, LOL. Let's face it folks, most of us hate the popular music of today (Britney, Justin, B2K, and not so good rap music with the same beat) You turn on MTV and see these subpar artist receiving so much attention so we are holding on to our heroes like Prince, Phil Collins, Hall & Oates, Whitney, and MJ and we miss those days when they were on top and popular and everyone loved them because music was so great back then. But I will give up on P being the man and just accept him for who he is in 2004, enough said. Holla @ your boy!

It was a very good performance, but I think many fans are too close to the subject matter to really be objective, one way or the other.

On the one hand, many fans are blinded by everything he does, and just lavish praise on him, regardless of how good it was. On the other, you have folks who have such high expectations that nothing he does is good enough anymore. Of course, the "truth", if one can be found when dealing with opinions, is somewhere in the middle.

Prince is still a consumate showman, and blows away 90% of his peers when it comes to live performance. Many fans really can't get past the fact that they've seen so many incredible performances from him that the bar is raised too high. He can't get to the level of performance that they once saw, because their memories of how that was are so overwhelming.

I've learned to listen to what non-fans are saying, just to see if I'm jaded one way or the other. I thought this most recent TV appearance was solid, but not one of his better ones. HOWEVER, most non-fans I've talked to were completley floored by it. I talked to one guy the other day, who stopped me in my apartment complex because he saw my Prince T-shirt, who just raved about the Leno show. He was just blown away by how good Prince was, and went on and on about how he never knew how incredible he was live. Now, to us it sounds like this guy has been living under a rock, but you have to understand that he's never been exposed to anything other than his radio hits. To a newbie, Prince managed to pull them in. He had an incredibly tight performance, and he put on one hell of a show. Cool thing is, WE know that the man can do even better, so just imagine what it will be like when he sees the lil' dude in concert!
