Almost right. It looks like 78-94 for WBR, plus Old Friends 4 Sale, the vault album recorded between '85 and '94. And then later on, the albums Art Offical Age, PlectrumElectrum.

WBR owns nothing from 1994. Neither TMBGITW, nor Black Album, nor Come.

The Black Album and Come are still Warner Bros. albums, at least as far as worldwide. The U.S. as mentioned earlier, is different. TMBGITW is just a single, was never an album.

I really only listen digitally now, but I guess the CD has died, because in many ways 'we' were only getting them for the pristine digital sound and the booklet/artwork - but now the digital sound is available via streaming or mp3 - so that only leaves the artwork - but that is really catered for by the vinyl now. So I can see why CD is slowly going the way of the dinosaur! (I still buy Prince albums on CD if avialable but no other artists!).

uhh, it's definitely not "pristine digital" if it's only digitally available MP3 or streaming...

Unless a FLAC or WAV is available for purchase somewhere.

[Edited 10/14/21 18:23pm]

If it's available on something like Tidal, then you're getting as good as CD quality.

Erm, that’s exactly my point! Releasing this makes me feel the estate has no plans for a deluxe reissue of Controversy, which I badly want.

Wrong. WB is/were distributing them, that's all.
WB is not able to use the songs of both albums in a greatest hits package.
They are not able to release them on vinyl neither.

When Prince died, every big wreckastores made available all Prince's album they could, there were even stand with photographs of every WB album.
Come was never part of these marketing operations, and were completely absent from the stores. Just like Chaos and Disorder.
The Vault was part of it though.

There's a reason why WB cannot use songs past 1992 in their greatest hits package, whether Prince being dead or alive.

I m sorry but I m not japanese, so I didn't want to pay extra shipment costs, just to not have the booklet, by the way.

No, I m not complaining at all. I just stated facts.
If you want the blu-ray+ the booklet, you had to buy the Occidental SDE.

Why did Prince not release this gem in PRINCE and put out WHEN WE'RE DANCING CLOSE AND SLOW instead? I mean, WWDCAS is a fine song...but DO ME, BABY is truly transcendent!

This is a really cool surprise, think the Controversy album version is still my favourite (perhaps more due to familiarity) but fascinating to hear this early incarnation.

Slightly random question but remember a thread on here once saying that Do Me Baby appeared to be heavily inspired by an Eddie Hazel track (forget the name). Does this new version also display that same influence, or did that emerge later when it came time to rework the song for Controversy?

Two booklets, one in English and the other containing the Japanese translation of the lyrics, are included in the Japanese CD with the Blu-ray disk.

Exactly.

Great release, happy with it.

But the cover design... we already had that. His handwriting, the black and purple, etc.

They could've done an alternative pic from the cover shoot for one of the released singles...

And why an etched B-side? For what reason ?

Honestly, why not the raw unmixed version on the B-side ?

-

I’ve done my own b-side: Neurotic Lover’s Bedroom (Demo). The estate should have have put it on the vinyl and issued a statement saying they’d been trying to continue the pretence that Prince had this masterful statesman-like mind with a wealth of political and social awareness. However, having sifted through the boxes of tapes in the vault they’ve come to the conclusion most of the unreleased stuff is just filth, depraved and perverted. And the next release will be a double b-side of the original versions of Extralovable and Lust U Always. Won’t happen. [Edited 10/15/21 3:53am]

-

I did that too !

I've already done a remix of both these songs for my own use.

Added some old ''Do Me, Baby'' to it in the mix..

Tomorrow i'm gonna make another one.

Love this song's warmth and silkyness, very nice to have.

Though love, absolutely adore the album version !

So fantastic!!!! Uncomparably Prince.

Slowly building the warmth up to hotness throughout the whole song, talking shit in our ears to get us horny, than ending in the cold. Damn Prince!

Quoting PrinceVault ( http://www.princevault.co...o_Me,_Baby )

“Whether intentionally or not, the song’s music is similar to Eddie Hazel’s track Frantic Moment (written by George Clinton, Bootsy Collins and Bernie Worrell) from his Games, Dames and Guitar Thangs album released in 1977.”

Like so many of the demos released so far, this one makes me appreciate just how brilliant his official version is. This demo is so sweet sounding, so innocent. The official version has two crucial improvements for me. One, he's singing in the most paper thin, slightly distorted vocals, which no one has ever quite matched in intimacy. Maximum intensity from minimal output. And second, he does these wails that go from extreme high notes back down to his chest voice, which totally changes the effect to a master of seduction.

But it's amazing how he had the structure of the arrangement down at this point. It's beautifully done.

Yeah, I imagine MANY artists would have been happy with this 1979 version (and they wouldn't have been wrong). It could have been a nice R&B radio hit. But he took it in all kinds of other weird directions that weren't as commercial but helped establish him as a legendary, provocative artist. His forward-thinking adventurousness during this period is incredible.

It's 2021 and Prince fans still can't figure out where you can buy lossless music online. I mean, it's not like previous releases have been available in CD quality or even Hi-Res quality on sites like Qobuz or Tidal or HiResAudio or HDTracks (perhaps even iTunes?). It's not like there are search engines where you can enter the words "where to buy lossles smusic" and find articles that list various online stores.

.

Nope, they cannot figure that out for themselves. Need it to be spoonfed to them. And then completely forget about ever receiving such information so they can whine all over again when the next release comes along.

My god, the irony!

Ah yeah that's the one, thanks. Aye I do remember thinking the connection was a bit more subtle than people may have initially been making out, but I can definitely hear it with the Controversy version, feels like the busier nature of this new demo might obscure it a bit.

The release is great, but they aren't maximising sales because they seem to have given up on CD collectors.

Are they trying to be authentic to the era maybe? No CD in 1981. Seems like a waste to me though.

Again: stop reading things into perfectly explainable releases. Controversy is 40 years old, they wanted to do a little something to celebrate it, and they found a track that perfectly fit the bill and that woudl be of interest to collectors.

Simple as that. Nothing to do with "never an SDE".

"Ah but why then didn't they do anything for D&P 30th?" Because they were gonna (SDE) but then the W2A delay clusterfuck fucked with their plans.

I really love this version. Playing it alot and ordered the cassette.

I think it's a shame they couldn't have put another song on the other side.

Let's Rock would have been perfected and doubled the excitement.

I wouldn't mind at all at a later date if they included the tracks again on a SDE.
