Watching Purple Rain in upscaled 4K quality

Any of you watched purple rain on a 4ktv?
It looks really great and I have noticed a few things
For instance,at the beginning when prince opens up with "Let's go crazy" .On the DVD you can't see him face but now you van clearly see his face and you can tell that prince is lip synching. The words don't quite match
And the next thing I noticed is how obvious it is that during the "take me with u" part,it is obvious that prince isn't on the motorcycle except for the close up shots.
Is there anything you have noticed while watching this movie in 4k?

During the "Purify Yourself Scene" when Prince and Apollonia are walking to the lake, they are not talking/mouthing any words. Just walking. But we hear them talking in the audio, saying their lines. So they probably overdubbed the lines later. As well as Prince aruging with Wendy & Lisa, they are talking while they are filming, but the "I don't want to do your stupid music!" line was overdubbed, you could tell, cause it switched to the overdub. And one more thing, where Prince was playin wit Apples, with the motorcycle, when he picks her up again, those lines were overdubbed. I'm talking about this "OK, ok, cmon" line. I just want to say the Cinematography is great!

I haven't seen it in 4K, but those things were obvious from the audio alone. I remember thinking that when I saw it in the theater. All movies overdub some to most of the dialog, they just did an extra bad job on Purple Rain. It was a low budget flick, after all.

Right. I just have one question how much footage do they really have in the archives from the filming of the movie? And is it enough to really update it, if they have the original films, and transfer it to 4k, 8k, because the scenery is great. But would be better in a higher quality.

Where is the movie in upscaled 4K? Or are you just playing the blu-ray out of a 4K player to a 4K TV?

That's exactly what I said when I watched it on 4K devices. You can see his eyes and I never really saw that before.

Also, the tire tread on the motorcycle changes, so that's a clue right there, and it didn't take 4K to notice it.

There are tons of boo boos in that movie. We could be here all day. (And we probably will be!)

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I this a blooper thread?

If so, then the "premier" of the cloud guitar presents it hanging in the wrong direction.

Upside down.

Maybe the production designers were trying to be artsy fartsy, not sure, but it still makes me cringe when i see that scene lol

I remember Prince talking about scenes that were re-shot with him wearing a wig. Are those more obvious? He made it seem like it was really bad but I never noticed.

Prince's former art director Steve Parke recently published a book featuring the intimate, behind-the-scenes photographs he took of the star during his time at Paisley Park.

He also recounts the time Prince invited him to watch a montage of old performances he was preparing for the American Music Awards. When a scene from Purple Rain appeared, the star bellowed, "Look at that wig!" and burst out laughing.

Parke later asked Prince's hair stylist Earl Jones about the comment. He explained the star had had to reshoot a few scenes after the filming wrapped - but he had already cut his hair and bleached it blond - necessitating the bouffant hairpiece.

Jones added that Prince had reacted so badly to the bleach that his hair started breaking off, so he had to let it grow out, and dye it back to black.

"The hairstyle in Raspberry Beret was literally all I could do with it."

God, if only. I imagine it looking very Sheila E Romance 1600 era. Or maybe the estate found some and are saving them for an ATWIAD SDE. That would be something.

4k upscales movies and makes them look almost 4k
You will notice a big difference if you watch it on a good 4k player

OK, i'm done with this.

The sexist stuff was in the film.

It's of the time, like chain-smoking in the films of the sixties.

BUTT,

in the opening segment of the film during "LGC", there is a montage of "LGBTQ+" happenings lol

Right, and the entire movie is about a young man discovering he doesn't want to be like his father and abuse women. He wants to respect them, including his bandmates. The abuse is what he learned at home and from other men he knew, like Morris, and he finds himself heading down that same road and decides he doesn't want to go there.

The only problem, in the movie, is how easily he's forgiven. But the song Purple Rain is meant to be a shorthand way of showing he's a changed man, and via a little Hollywood magic, everyone understands and accepts this very quickly.

I still don´t understand the timeline of that bleached hair incident. If they had to reshoot scenes, it means that this happened before the tour, but he obviously had a very curly , natural hair during the tour and I considering the very physical antics on stage it was hardly a wig during that tour. Then I read elsewhere that Prince and Sheila had extremely short and dyed hair after the Purple Rain tour finale while they were still in Miami, but from what I know and based on the pictures I´ve googled from the Miami tour finale, he still had that Purple Rain pompadour hairdo during the tour finale, so he must´ve gotten a haircut right after that final Purple Rain show and he and Sheila showed up with short hair at an afterparty in Miami but this was in 1985, the movie was released in 1984.

Or he had a short haircut twice....right after wrapping up the movie, and then right after the tour, see the video for For the Tears in Your Eyes.

We´ve had several threads dedicated to this topic but so far we´ve never really figured out the exact timeline of this dyed hair incident. biggrin

Yea that makes no sense when you think about it. I'm guessing he changed his hair twice. Once after PR was done shooting, hence the wig for the unexpected reshoots. And then again when he dyed it. Maybe it wasn't an extreme change the first time but enough of a change where a wig was required. His hairdresser must have not realized the timeline issue when he provided the bleached hair anecdote. Or Prince was joking and referring to his hairstyle as wig-like?
