What surprises me how people here are split against The Revolution.

For me at least,no-one matches their creativity, influence, genre hopping, writing and just downright energy.

Sure, youth has a part to play in that but you only have to watch the official live video of Baby i'm a star to see that that energy was unmatched by later bands.

No-one played better funky solos with character like Matt Fink,no-one matched Brown Mark for groove (the closest player to Prince's actual style) and Wendy and Lisa came up with beautiful chord inversions and brought so many different influences with them.

Eric Leeds will always be THE sax player too.

In fact if I had to pick my top 3 backing bands it would go like this...

1.The Revolution.

2.The 87-89 band with Sheila,Levi,Boni etc.

3.The New Power Generation.

The revolution brought a very Beatlessque influence. He can get that by just listening to Beatles. Did the revolution eg Wendy & Lisa as far as song input goes,go on to forge new directions in.music ? No . They kept doing beatles type stuff. If he bought them back, we get more Beatles type stuff. No days of wild, no gett off, sexy mf , lovesig. . It would b less funky & more arty. It depends on Ur taste.

This. The Revolution could have never pulled off the show that is on the recently released DVD. But that 2011 band could have replicated the 1984 shows in their sleep.

Exactly. I find some of the earlier Revolution performances quite stiff and rigid in comparison. The Revolution were great in the studio, but every incarnation of the NPG blew them away live and were way more musically diverse and versatile.

The SOTT/Lovesexy band blew them out the water.

The question shud be "Why didnt Bruce do a Prince and expand his talents by being musically challenged by better muscians and fresh sounds and genres?" Prince has played with some of the most talented musicians in the world...Larry Graham, Sheila E, Maceo Parker, John Blackwell, Mono Neon, Gouche, Ida, Neto, Bruner, etc.

LOL at you clowns dogging the Revolution and/or Wendy & Lisa. Their influence resulted in the best and most successful music of Prince's career and that includes SOTT. The influence is still all over that album. Prince was a billy jack bitch for not reforming the revoltion- especially near the end of his career when he was at a commercial low point.

He went as far as could with revolution. They will have done 100s of songs. parade, around world in a day, roadhouse garden, dream factory etc. Most of there contrabutions were taken off sott &I don't think that they had much influence on purple rain though. He had to unfortunately hand them their P45s , so he could go to higher level of show. It just one of those things. He not that bothered about charts success or he would just put his 12 most commercial songs on each album.

As much as I like the Revolution´s sound and what they brought to the table, I think Wendy´s and Lisa´s influence is a bit overrated. Sure, they contributed to some great songs, or, in the case of Power Fantastic, basically composed the whole song but Prince wrote some of his greatest songs during his time with them all by himself, for example When Doves Cry, The Beautiful Ones, and countless more. He made great music with and without them, and before and after them.

Only a straight up fool doesn't recognize that Wendy & Lisa made Prince the best he ever was. FU if you don't agree but critic ratings and sales prove me right. SOTT has Wendy and Lisa's influence all over it...Prince's PEAK was 1982-1987. Facts.

Not even close. W&L were the best thing that ever happened to Prince (and he the best thing that happened to them...even more, actually). Sheila E influenced Prince but the others you mentioned are just hired hands and Mayte's pussy was what influenced Prince. Well he was in love so that's not really fair of me. She has zero musical talent. Prince wrote tons of songs influenced by whatever pussy he was into at the time.

It's the damn truth, everyone who worked with Prince was just hired hands. Even Sheila was a frickin hired hand.

He hired and he fired. They were hired hands.

No it doesn't. They were present and recorded songs with him during the era, but he excluded them from the album. Besides IGBABN, they had no input into any of the songs. Yes, they had recorded some overdubs for Strange Relationship, but Prince removed all of them before he put the song on the album.

Wendy and Lisa's influence I would argue is more correlated to songwriting than anything else. Just as ATWIAD had a lot of their (and Coleman's brother) sonic identity inspiring Prince - no doubt I bet them being around for a lot of the seeds that SOTT was born out of means that their influence of knowing him meant their DNA was in some of the things he himself was creating

I prefered Prince's concerts post 2000. It's got nothing to do with the musicianship of the band members. I don't know enough to have an opinion on that. Rather, I prefer the later concerts because the spectacle, theatrics and dancing were toned down. The focus of the show was more on the music itself.

Yes it does. Prince was notorious for not giving proper credt when it came to somewriting. The influence of Wendy & Lisa is not just songwriting but they opened a box of feminine freedom that Prince ran with. When they were gone he reverted to a macho, I'm a pimp daddy goofball not long after. Without W&L Prince would not have reached the heights he did. The peak of his career was with the Revolution.

Not arguing with that. The guy was a phenom like Freddie Mercury. I'm just saying W&L helped Prince reach his masterpieces. The feminine influence. That's when Prince was free.

U r telling me u'd rather see a show with Bobby z Wendy & Lisa then with them. All welcome 2 America band is better & u can add sonny Thompson etc too. . These shows were straight up purple Mac with Mac daddy leading them high on his drugs. U can't get more inspired then that.

If Prince wanted to cash in (and with him the Revolution) then they could have done it.

But Prince wished to do other things...

Anyone doubting Wendy and Lisa's influence/Creativity/Musicianship only has to cast an eye across their Wikipedia or Publishing pages to understand what they brought to the table-more than anyone else he has worked with before or since....

Co-writes with Prince..

17 days

America

A million miles

Computer blue

Power fantastic

Mountains

Sometimes it snows in April

In a large room with no light

Our destiny/Roadhouse garden

Sometimes in snows in April

Under the cherry moon

Then went on to release(imho) some pretty great lp's of their own and are multi award winners-

"Wendy and Lisa technically share the honor of winners of a Grammy and Oscar for being part of The Revolution, as Purple Rain won two Grammys, and the Oscar for Best Original Score. In 2010, they received the Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music for their work on Nurse Jackie.[1] They received the ASCAP award for Composers of the Year for their work on Dangerous Minds, the theme to HBO's Carnivàle, Crossing Jordan and Heroes. They were nominated for an Emmy in 2012 for the main title theme for the Fox show Touch.[7]"

"They have also done session work and/or written songs with Seal, k.d. lang, Joni Mitchell, Meshell Ndegeocello, Pearl Jam, Terence Trent D'arby, Lisa Germano, Lisa Marie Presley, Liz Phair, Michael Penn, Grace Jones, Tricky, The Three O'Clock, Uh Huh Her, Sheryl Crow, Victoria Williams, Rob Thomas, Gwen Stefani, Skye Edwards, Scritti Politti, Nerina Pallot, OK Go, Madonna, The Like, Nina Gordon, fDeluxe, The Family, Doyle Bramhall II, Nikka Costa, André Cymone, Kate Earl, Eric Clapton, Bettye LaVette, Ilse Delange, Mac Miller, Walk the Moon"

I mean seriously, who else in his list of 'sidekicks/band members' has achieved as much???

It's just crazy to write off their abilities.
