Listening to LA 61, I can see why they picked a live show that didn't have Welcome 2 America on it.

"Big Brother's in full effect, if you still get molested at the airport, just remember who you elected" - Prince, 2011

lol

Yet they are officially releasing the version of Dreamer/Welcome 2 America from the 14th May 2011 show. IIRC that line is there in that version.

I wonder if this line was originally included on the studio version and has been edited out by the Estate?

Clearly they are going with the promotional line that Prince was being 'prophetic', rather than criticising the Obama administration, despite the song being recorded in 2010.

Do you remember 2010? Not great years for Obama.

I m sure they won't even print the lyrics in the booklet. Which is hilarious since they focus their promotion on the relevance of the texts Prince wrote for this album.

Do you hear yourself? Constantly making up stories and already bitching about that outcome that you just fantasized on? You're trying to create a parallel reality where you are allowed to bitch about everything because you know, you are always right. When will these people that make up stories and pollute the environment in this place be banned? God knows.

it's never going to happen. The people that run this place just don't give a damn anymore. The current state of this place is 10 times worse than it was in the mid 00s when Ben had to install moderators. This website is a pale comparison of what it once was.

Maybe once upon a time back then, P was contemplating on releasing "Welcome 2 America" along with "20TEN" as a packaged deal, just like he did with "Lotusflow3r" and "MPLSound". "20TEN" was practically an extension or continuation of the sound he had on "MPLSound", so "Welcome 2 America" will probably act as the same for "Lotusflow3r". Could be part of the reason why that live version of "Dreamer" is the W2A single's B-Side.

I still dig LF alot, so I hope that is the case. It would be like a trilogy. "The Rainbow Children"/"Lotusflow3r"/"Welcome 2 America". I always saw LF as an extension of "The Rainbow Children" as far as production techniques and the organic feel of it. So, I'm looking forward to "Welcome 2 America" as it seems like it'll have that as well.

I actually had the same thought, because he say’s that line on multiple dates on while performing the song.

I am so excited about all this. But difficult decision. Pro deluxe: - Encourage more ambitious reissues from the estate. - The concert seems to be fabulous, and I don’t have any later years Prince concert film. - Book and poster could be nice, and I’m intrigued by the gold package. Contra: - I’s just a lot of money. - Not interested in ephemera. - Don’t really know how good this album will be. Agony.

Or on the flipside of that note: encourage more greedy reissues from the estate?

I mean, what if Parade SDE costs $300 and comes with a cardboard build-it-yourself Prince standee? lol

On a serious note, I don't see how a Parade SDE could possibly cost more than SOTT SDE. In fact, I think it will probably be more like the 1999 SDE (which, IMO was very a reasonable and well-put together set).

Disrespectful? I gave thanks for the info because it is going to save me from spending a lot of my hard earned money on something I won't like. Since when is giving thanks being disrespectful? Giving thanks is being courteous. I'm sorry if it sounded disrespectful. I'm from America where buying an album is a choice and not a requirement. I tend to forget that the internet is not only nationwide, but it is also worldwide. I just assumed that buying an album wasn't a requirement in other countries either. If I came across as disrespectful to anyone over in Jonestown, that was not my intention. Just give me a moment to gather my things and leave before the kool-aid is passed around. If you need me, I'll be in the furntiture store looking at a kitchen table and two cute little bar stools to spend this year's Prince money on. Ta-ta.

I hope you're correct - 1999 has been the best one by far: affordable, 100% fat-free and, yes, shelveable. lol

That's why I'm gonna skip this SDE and buy the regular cd, even though I'd previously decided to just stream it - to send the right message. If I buy neither, that message is 'people don't like Prince.' But if I buy the regular cd, that message is 'people don't want their SDEs to be full of knickknacks and records they can't play.'

The idea of Prince covering a Soul Asylum song feels like something right out of left field (I know they are from Minnesota) but I'm also really looking forward to hearing this track. I hope it brings SA some benefits.

They really deserve more credits and exposure; Soul Asylum is my favourite band ever (as Prince is my most beloved artist) and a lot of its gems need to be discovered by a broader audience.

I'll say again, I just don't think Prince gave much of a fuck about releasing albums as things went on.

There was the largest gap for releases in his entire career from 20Ten to Plectrum/AOA -- and 2 years between Planet Earth and Lotus, and 2 years between Musicology and 3121 before that. Look how many of those releases were gimmicky releases or giveaways too (20Ten, Musicology, Lotus, Planet Earth). For the most part, after the "slave" years, he either scored an exclusive deal with a label (Rave, Lotus), pushed it through his websites (ONA, TRC, Slaughterhouse, Crystal Ball) or just flat out gave the fucking things away (20Ten, Planet Earth, Musicology)

I think he was ahead of the game and read the "10 cents on the dollar" bullshit a long time ago. Then just started realizing that the money to be made from CD's and shit was offering increasingly diminishing returns no matter what he did. At a certain point, ANYTHING he released would be pirated or streamed for free somewhere 100 times over for copy he sold.

He understood that the real money was in performing live and, barring that, carving out cash up front type deals to release CD's or whatever and he stopped playing the traditional game a good while ago.

I don't think he ever really mastered or found the ceiling to what he might have been able to do online (monetizing his vault and live/aftershow material in ways that catered to his hardcore fanbase) but it's not like the dude went fucking broke for lack of a ton of top 10 shit on the Billboard charts or being constantly spun on the radio and I seriously doubt he cared for the most part. Even the stuff he did charge for online wound up all over the internet in ways that were increasingly impossible to litigate or control.

"The internet is dead" and all that.

People might point to promotion (or lack thereof) and cite the 60 Minutes bit as proof of his commercial potential but, let's face it, the intense interest in W2A is 95% due to him being deceased and centered around the idea that we're getting this rare and bitching utter gem of a forgotten jewel of an album. 60 Minutes wasn't gonna due a promo bit every time an alive and well Prince decided he had a record people needed to buy or hear.

I dunno but you're probably right. Limited ways to really milk it and also SoTT and 1999 were double albums.

They'll throw the movie in there I would think, another live show and the usual. Wait...can they put the movie in there legally? Not that it matters either way since no one is gonna buy Parade SDE for that shitshow of a motion picture but it would be away to bulk up the package. Maybe a color version.

I dunno. Kind of tired of the SDE's besides the vault stuff and live material, which is what I want more of across the board. Bring on all the aftershows I missed, god dammit.

ok, so this thread has gotten a bit lengthy so if someone can help me out. there will NOT be a DVD (blu ray) of the W2A TOUR with actual songs from the album, even a few? just looked at the deluxe version on the Prince store and the dvd is mostly covers and classics (which is fine), but didn't he perform some of the w2a stuff live?

As much as I love the content across the 1999 and SOTT Deluxe Editions, the format puts me off regular listening. While they are great for big deluges of material, I am very excited to get an actual album from the vault. Not only is it great to listen to music sequenced as Prince intended as a cohesive artistic statement - of which there are hopefully many more in the vault - listening to music within the context of an album lends the material more value. So, to whoever was saying Deluxe editions were the way forward: please, we can have both!

In the case of Welcome 2 America, after spending the last few years in the 80s, it is great to get an album from this period of his career. The fact that the album seems to be underpinned by an overarching theme is exciting - it's not like we're getting an aimless album for album's sake in the vein of Planet Earth. We're getting Prince hopefully being a bit fired up and doing something different, even if in the end it turns out I disagree with whatever he's got to say. Case in point: I'm not religous and I don't believe in the theocratic order, but The Rainbow Children is in my Top 3 Prince Albums.

The songs so far:

Welcome 2 America (It's grown on me, not top-tier but it's good).
Hot Summer (It's not great, but it's not as bad as people make out. It actually almost sounds like a fluffy Prince-Wendy-Lisa Revolution outake. Put Wendy and Lisa on the backing vocals and like an out of place sitar break in the middle and I don't think it would have sounded too out of place on the SOTT Deluxe. I wonder if the version we know is what will be present on the album. EDIT: It also kind of reminds me of Sexx Laws by Beck.)
Same Page, Different Book (Another one that has grown on me a little. I dismissed it when I first heard it a few years ago. Listening again, it sounds funkier and the vocal delivery is little more offbeat. Still, wish it had more of a kick.)

As for the other songs, it's a very intriguing tracklist. From the title alone, I'm expecting a lot from 'Running Game (Son of a Slave Owner)', '1010 (Rin Tin Tin)' is curious to the point of being a little absurd, as is the Soul Asylum cover.

Bring on the album!

Well, so far for this post released album he actually prefered to leave in the vault.

It is basically never cohesive when it comes to unreleased Prince albums.

Since he tends to take songs from them, rerecord them, rerelease them in other configurrations, etc.

Don't forget he also said that a lot in the vault is unfinished.

Maybe that couts for this album too, since he did not release it.

We'll never know for sure.

-

And Herb4 is right in his approach by saying :

"I'll say again, I just don't think Prince gave much of a fuck about releasing albums as things went on."

... and I agree on that.
