If I Was Your Girlfriend

I've heard this song in at least Four different variants and everytime it works brilliant. Too quote him from the Las Vegas show in 2006. " I gotta let it breathe" and to quote Toejam from P&B PODCAST: "You can put on that song for a whole day, and I would never miss a beat."

And the hollow, simplicity yet unbelievable groove is what makes that song for me. That Bass, that lovely heavenly BASS!

And I just know in the back of my head that the Synth leadline is My first Prince memory as a little child. Was afraid of him during my childhood when I saw that Sexy MF video. He looked like a bad or evil guy.

But then I heard IIWYGF later in my teenage years and instantly recalled that synth hook. Made me interested of Prince and in my early twenties (2011) I took the step into his musical world. Never been the same since.

Damn U! Prince's vocals on that track are phenomenal as well as the musical arrangement.

"Crystal Ball"...To be able to sit behind the drum kit for 10 minutes and map out a whole entire song like that in his mind (before laying down the other instruments/voices) is amazing. All the stops, dynamics, tempo changes..it's unreal.

That's a top answer for me, and ditto on the vocals and arrangement.

Sorry OP, as this isn't following directions, but since one person declined to give a song, will make up for it and add...

Here's a pick for a genius song from that Tora Tora artist:

It's between Damn U and Solo for me. Solo gets a little nudge over Damn U just for the simplicity of the song as an acapella triumph. But Damn U has all of the tight arrangement and beautiful instrumentations along with his magnificent vocal gymnastics.

"Crystal Ball" is a great choice, as are several others in this thread.

I'll put forward "Something in the Water (Does Not Compute)". The tense drum machine, the alien synth motif competing with the "warm" synth pads, the guttural screams - it's incredible. I find it spellbinding in every variation, including the original studio version to the various live incarnations.

Nothing from Purple Rain will be a popular choice BUT: the production on Little Nikki is genius.
Listen to it. The words, the music, the instruments, the voice....those little wooow screams at the right time.

It's breathtaking and hair-raising at the same time.

WDC because it shouldn't work, and he made it a pop hit out of something experimental that moved the cultural dial forward.

Beautiful Ones would be my real pick though. Everything you need to know about Prince's genius is in that.

"When Doves Cry" immediately came to my mind as well. It's a perfect song, from the arrangement to the lyrics, and sounds like nothing else that came before it or since for that matter.

There are many, but one that leaps to mind is In This Bed I Scream. No other pop musician could do something like that.

Every answer given so far is wrong. There is not one song that can "prove" that Prince or James Brown or Frank Zappa or Bob Dylan or [insert name of any artist] is a genius. Because you can't "prove" that someone is a genius. You can take any song mentioned here, let somebody listen to it and there's a chance that that person will say: hmmm, doesn't do anything for me.
If you take any of this seriously, you're a bigger fool than I am.

You could argue that Prince's genuis was in the breadth and scope of his music. His ability to dip into any genre, blend genres, evolve genres, etc. The ability of one man do so many different things both technically and artistically is staggering.

In which case, there's no one song to prove his genuis -- it's his catologue (or at least a portion of it) taken collectively.

Appreciate this. Lurker316's point, too.

Got one question, though. Does a song have to resonate with everyone to be suggestive of genius?

For example, can the way a song resonates strongly with multitudes of others suggest genius?

WDC, Computer Blue, Erotic City, Question of U, and probably Cream.

I don't care if any of it was done or not done by the time he put out a song.
