For my song, I'm going with If I Was Your Girlfriend yep...1999 was the one that made me a fan and made me wanna see Purple Rain opening night...and when i saw the movie, next day i was at the wrecka stow looking for For You, Prince, and Dirty Mind...i had hated on those lps and refused to even check em out... that American Bandstand appearance had me spooked for P's early years...but i recovered greatly |

I love these stories from fans who were around at the beginning! Glad that "1999" converted you - it was the song that made me become a hardcore fan as well, though in 1989-90 in my case when I first heard it.

Sign ‘O The Times - its tightness and sparse arrangement draw the listener in to focus on the powerful lyrics and subtle but effective guitar. I love his use of space - some producers would have put loads of layers and cluttered the mix (as did Prince unfortunately when he performed it live @ 2004). The groove with its ping-pong percussion and funky bass that ever so slightly bent up at the end has been burnt into my brain since ‘87. A perfect example of provocative lyrics, top- notch musicianship, social awareness and restraint make this his best song for me. |
