You could argue that Prince's genuis was in the breadth and scope of his music. His ability to dip into any genre, blend genres, evolve genres, etc. The ability of one man do so many different things both technically and artistically is staggering.

In which case, there's no one song to prove his genuis -- it's his catologue (or at least a portion of it) taken collectively.

Nothing from Purple Rain will be a popular choice BUT: the production on Darlin' Nikki is genius.
Listen to it. The words, the music, the instruments, the voice....those little wooow screams at the right time.

It's breathtaking and hair-raising at the same time.

Yes, a typo by the old lady with macular degeneration.

For those who have a problem with this topic i just wanna say 1 thing.Individual examples in art can also showcase artists greatness as much as collective art.

Every answer given so far is wrong. There is not one song that can "prove" that Prince or James Brown or Frank Zappa or Bob Dylan or [insert name of any artist] is a genius. Because you can't "prove" that someone is a genius. You can take any song mentioned here, let somebody listen to it and there's a chance that that person will say: hmmm, doesn't do anything for me.

the song “1999”....I was blown away when I first heard it in the summer of ‘82.It was unlike anything else on the radio....so bold, unique and futuristic!
i was a Prince hater until i heard that song...thats the one that converted me for good

Ironically, I didn't like Prince because of 1999, I have never like that song. But when I saw Purple Rain, I fell in love...

For my song, I'm going with If I Was Your Girlfriend

I love these stories from fans who were around at the beginning! Glad that "1999" converted you - it was the song that made me become a hardcore fan as well, though in 1989-90 in my case when I first heard it.

Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

yeahthat

Isn't this why we love him? He never ceases to amaze me. Prince could effortlessly produce tracks from many different genres. This is one quality that makes him incomparable IMO.

But, if we have to choose one song...that's difficult. I would have to say Little Red Corvette.

Sign ‘O The Times - its tightness and sparse arrangement draw the listener in to focus on the powerful lyrics and subtle but effective guitar. I love his use of space - some producers would have put loads of layers and cluttered the mix (as did Prince unfortunately when he performed it live @ 2004). The groove with its ping-pong percussion and funky bass that ever so slightly bent up at the end has been burnt into my brain since ‘87. A perfect example of provocative lyrics, top- notch musicianship, social awareness and restraint make this his best song for me.
