I like the story about how Miles Davis said, "That little mother fucker ambushed me" in regards to Prince's hand signals and musical queues to the band that Miles knew nothing about. If you look at the performance again through the lens of that quote Miles looks annoyed and frustrated at times. Prince pulled that same shit on Sting when Sting sat in on bass at some aftershow.

agree with this. Miles looked kind of lost but that's only because he hadn't rehearesed and they weren't playing free form jazz either.

Meanwhile, the band was wise to Prince's hand signals, time changes, calls and cues.

Of course, Im just speculating

I've been listening to this show for decades...amazing to finally SEE it! Just so amazing from beginning to end and watching Miles clearly giving respect had me tearing up a little.

Everybody has brought up some of the points I would make but you get the vibe that they were glad to be done with the tour. Sheila drool

Glad people are able to finally see this and it's just not the select few of us who have always known. While it's cool to feel a part of something special that people don't know about, it's better that everybody in the world knows.

Musical inspiration when we all need it the most...

Love this sentiment. "Elite" cliques especially when it comes to the Prince fandom are narrow-minded and disgusting. He was a gift to the world and we should champion celebrating him and all his art such as this collection.

This show wasn't only in elite circles. I had it on VHS boot. But it was always from the drum solo onwards.

That's not what I meant. Many of us had the incomplete show for years. I'm talking about those who've hoarded the goods and have complained (similar to what Questlove does) about how it's "not as special" when everyone has it. Just a damn shame.

But I digress. This set has made my musical year.

After this show and the re-release of SOTT, I was reading comments on Reddit complaining that "It's over" because everyone are finally hearing the outtakes and shows like this.

While everyone is entitiled to their opinion I don't share it. I'm just am glad the world has more access and will be turned on to it like we've been for years. Your words here bolded because I couldn't have said it better. highfive

(EDIT) While this re-release is expensive, people should also be glad they don't have to pay as much as I did for all of these. lol

For me this show is also the best part of the new box! I enjoyed it a lot and will come probably back more often to this one then to any other officially released videos (besides maybe The Undertaker and UTCM).

Has anybody already compared the video to the old "Miles from the Park"? Of course here we get the whole show and much improved audio. But from my memory, also the video is with different shots and camera angles. Can anyone confirm?

Some of the quick editing to switch between wally and prince is a bit dodgy.

Funny to hear prince say it must be past miles bedtime.

I dont think prince tried to confuse miles but he def did not give him much space to really get in the groove as he kept telling the band to switch it up or play this or that. Shame as it would have been cool to see where miles took it. He was just getting started really.

Just finished watching the whole thing last night. I enjoyed this more than the movie. The SOTT/Lovesexy band was awesome. Sheila is so talented.

I might like the March 21, 1987 show at First Avenue better than the NYE show.

I noticed that too, even at the start on Sign “O” The Times and Housequake sounded so like it did on the Nude tour. I think with Sheila being a percussionist and Prince wanting to have her front of stage, often with Cat, there had to be a reliance on drum programming. It’s one of the reasons he had to keep Fink in the band, who was (and probably still is) so adept at that side of things. Later Morris Hayes did this aspect.
There may or may not be something coming!

I’d not even thought about this until tonight, but this was the first full concert at Paisley Park (there were a few extras filmed earlier in ‘87 for the SOTT movie edits). Then there doesn’t seem to be another full concert inside for several years.

Almost the entire SOTT movie was filmed in Paisley Park. Which is one of the reasons why the movie is the lifeless lipsync mess that it is.

I'm really happy as we have now the full concert in pristine quality. Of course, "Adore" is the best part.
What really surprised me is the fact that promo videos were also included !! This Deluxe release is really complete. If I'm not mistaken since the announcement, it was never listed, Howcome?

The show is great! What I like most about it, is that everything Price was about at the time is represented durring the show. From the stellar music to the choreography, it's all done very well!

I finally got around to watching the concert this evening.

Absolutely stunning performance. Such energy.

Highlight for me was Adore. Possibly one of his greatest live performances. Why this wasn't played live in full more often is a mystery. Stunning.

U Got The Look was another highlight and it took me by surprise. Brilliant guitar playing.

I will gave to watch this again very soon.

I know I'm incredibly late to the party at this point, but I finally got some time to watch the concert DVD. (I had to spread it across two days.)

.

As a guy who's dabbled in film and video production, the visual presentation was a frustrating experience for me. The camera crew didn't seem to have enough resources to follow all the action (no camera up on the riser to film Sheila E.?!?!?), and they were inexperienced in filming a kinetic experience like a live show. (Not just Prince's type of show, but any show that didn't involve the musicians standing still.) They either missed or incorrectly framed a lot of key moments.

.

BUT... musically, it was amazing. I couldn't believe it, but I actually got tears in my eyes during his "Purple Rain" solo. That one sequence is the ultimate example of a performer in complete control of his craft, of the audience, of the moment... It was transcendent. I was so caught up, I immediately went back and watched it again.
