Yeah, this show is bad ass. Fired it up on my TV for better sound and can't walk away.

RIP, Prince. God damn he was great.

Watched Adore 4 times now. Superb. Crazy decision to not play it on the tour. Maybe he realised that since he played it on the Lovesexy tour.
.
The other thing of note is his lack of undies. The little guy was packing that's for sure

I just watched it. It‘s absolutely incredible - I almost felt like I was there. It‘s strange to think how familiar we have become with his shows over the years - and yet it still feels fresh. That shows how good his liveshows were. The „Beautiful Night“ Jam was my personal highlight - too funky 😎

The pre-show interviews explained why the crowd was dead. This show was to celebrate Paisley Park opening and to schmooze the local business people and the band’s family members etc. Only a few hundred young fans around the stage. I think Miko hugs his parents at some point.

The what now?

I...uhhh...missed that.

You Tube Algorithms led me to Montreaux "rock night" with 3rd Eye Girl (whichever night that was) and that crowd was on fucking fire (so was the band) so whatever is going on here is not entirely due to the crowd not being miked. Maybe it was late and folks were tired...

Along those lines (and unrelated to the thread), I got a new appreciation for 3rd Eye Girl since I'd never seen that show, but I gotta say - and I've brought it up before - Prince's eyes, face and overall demeanor were really starting to show whatever it was that was ailing him. He almost had tears in his eyes on "Breakdown". No one can tell me something wasn't off with him, as great as he was that show.

It was..um...sad(?) in certain ways watching one after the other. So many years passing. Made ME feel old. Shit...I AM old. sad

Continuing the derail, I really dig the slowed down versions of certain songs he did towards the end (Let's Go Crazy, ICNTTPOYM) and the way he rocked them up.

...

Back on track though...

I watched this show 2x today and...my god. Just...wow.

Much like the 1999 DVD we got, the thing just builds and BUILDS. You can tell by the end they're just making it up and jamming but the band is RIGHT THERE on the time changes and the funk is thick. People who say this band blows away the Revolution are right. No way the Revoution could jam and freestyle and make noise like this. And that's even though I thought Shiela's drum solo was off and Miles Davis was underwhelming. The thing that gets me is that THEY ARE REALLY PLAYING so I even love the fuck ups. Makes it more fun.

I never much cared for You Got the Look but LOVED it here. The hits and non SoTT tracks he worked in on this set were really great (1999, Erotic City) but I was hoping, with 30 minutes to go, that we'd get The Cross and Forever in My Life but we have those on the movie DVD so w/e.

Just fantastic.

Thank you, but I meant the very last words of the show:
"Just kidding, Jon. You big..."
The word after "You big"
Right before Prince leaves the stage.

I'm not really that big on U Got the Look. It's one of my least faves of his hits but god damn does he sell that shit. That chugging guitar riff...

OK I like this song now.

This is pretty fucking great. Not what I expected either (in a good way). Good move for them to change it up so much from the movie. Anxious to play on it a proper sound system since my laptop is less than ideal. If I Was Your Girlfriend brought me to literal tears and reminded me of my ex wife. Jesus Christ that took me off guard.

That may have been one of the more fresh versions of WDC I've ever heard.

LOL at the "modern technology" balloon malfunction.

Is it me or is the crowd a little low energy?

My only real nitpick with it is that it drags out the costume change parts a little too much and I might just be the only one here who doesn't think Cat adds much of anything.

One thing I've always wondered about this tour is how much of those drum beats are sequenced? I know he programs certain drums to make weird sounds and they're electronic but on certain tracks, it almost has to be programmed (Hot Thing comes to mind).

I like the overlay/double exposure camera work for the most part but wish the show had a few more different angles and close ups. I think I can count 3 (maybe 4) cameras tops.

These are really minor complaints though. Good job all around and very happy to learn it wasn't just a rehash of the film.

...

God I miss this man.

EDIT: Also MILES DAVIS SIGHTING!

[Edited 9/25/20 8:36am]

I loved Cat when I saw this band back in the day! As for beats, way less programing than when The Revolution was his band. You could tell duringa couple if songs like You've Got The Look when Sheila came out from there were still beats being played but overall I think she played most of it. The crowd was there for a benefit so who knows if they were all big fans or not. It did seem like there were not a lot of people there and they were lowin the mix. Cool show but I thought they were way more dynamic on The Lovesexy Tour.

The screening at Pailsey Park was awesome. I need a new TV, it was flawless on the big screen. For the folks talking about the crowd, that's how shows at Paisley Park were. It was never like seeing a roaring crowd in a stadium.

This performance was fantastic to see via the Youtube premier. Great audio quality and the video was decent as well. The crowd, just like the Utrecht gig, are just not super high in the mix. Mix that with it being a smaller venue thus a smaller crowd, they aren't in the mix much but in the video you can see them having a good time

I don’t know who he hired for the lighting and camerawork as it looks like a home video— harsh lighting and awful editing

This was filmed on 3/4 inch tape which was used up until the late 90s. 3/4 inch tape was not high definition, in fact it's called standard definition and it had this soap opera-ish warmth to it. It would be a nightmare to calibrate with stage lights, etc. It's also very difficult to make a standard definition video into an HD clip because you lose details.

It's more a fault with camera technology at the time then the resolution (HD vs SD). Video cameras could not handle low light well, would get blown out by bright light, and certain colors like saturated reds or blues resulted in noise/static and complete loss of detail, and there was ghosting on movement (seen really bad in the Purple Rain concert).

Remember brand new DVDs are only SD too!

Still, the camera man missed his split on Housequake and the sequencesed splits with the mic stand later. You had one job! And seriously, Matthew with the balloons, what an epic fail. You basically perfect your own Craft, but the people around you is hired like it's the amateur hour.

Love this! Hot Thing performance, with a more laid back atmosphere. He danced the way he wanted, when he felt like it and when he was in his right element.

it's a small crowd. That paid $200 per person.. it's not a regular concert crowd. And there's not many of them. That makes for a different atmosphere. Kinda like an aftershow. The small club crowd also doesn't sound loud. Personally, I prefer the crowd to not be in the recording much. They get in the way. I love the Utrecht show as well, that's about as loud as a crowd should ever be, imo.

I’d agree with most other artists, but master showmen like Prince, James Brown, etc they need the crowd noise heard with the way they interact with the crowd (all them chants Prince does sound awkward af when we don’t hear anyone chanting back)

But when you look at the crowd, you see plenty of people dancing, clapping, singing. So it must be the mix.
If you take any of this seriously, you're a bigger fool than I am.

I'm only halfway through and most of my comments have been made alrady but here goes:
F-ing amazing, much better to have than the SOTT movie (which I love).
I also was annoyed that the camera missed the HQ split and that Cat dance costume change went on forever and was in slmost complete darkness -Cat's "dancing" has aged the least well IMO. I remember loving it at the time but now it's a bit embarrassing.
I'm glad I'm not the first to point out him going commando - pretty hard to miss. If he's not wearing bikini briefs, then he'll just show it all!!

The band was incredible. The great thing was watching a show that included material that was obviously highly rehearsed and polished but also felt like it was in transition and a bit of free-form. Kind of like seeing the Hamilton cast perform at the White House. A little stripped down (no sets) and with the exciting edge of a one-off where anything goes.
