I've had this bootleg for years but I forgot how long It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night goes on for. That is one SERIOUSLY looooong jam. There are some gratuitous stage antics throughout the night from Prince but I guess NYE calls for that kind of thing. Great show overall. Thanks to the Estate for showing it.

That was unreal! I've seen clips of this before, and I used to have the bootleg on CD ROM, but maybe I never watched it because I was sitting there with my jaw on the floor the entire time. Such an interesting time in his life, too. He had just had his spiritual epiphany and decided to cancel the Black Album only a few weeks before. He started work on Lovesexy. He starts the show in his SOTT attire, and ends the night/starts the new year in his Lovesexy gear. So many moments! This is easily one of his best shows ever, certainly the best I've seen, in person or otherwise. This is a win for the Estate from me!

Incredible - so great to see this performance in this quality. And yeah, the transition from SOTT to Lovesexy right before your eyes is amazing to see.

Great work by the estate / WB for pulling together a genuinely exciting launch night when he's no longer with us and we're in the middle of pandemic!

Cat was adorable but Sheila was so amazingly hot back then, especially in those barely there outfits.

So fun...like everyone I love watching the transition from Sign to Lovesexy. It's there right before our eyes. Amazing. But the whole show was amazing. Loved whoever commented about the Walking Dead crowd...I said exactly the same thing. My husband said I would've already been escorted out if I was there for being a complete spastic, screaming like a lunatic. lol lol lol He's probably right.

The crowd wasn’t dead, you can see he’s feeding off of their energy. The audience volume is turned down in the mix. This wasn’t recorded for a release, so he often did this so he could hear the band better when watching it later. I guess they weren’t able to turn it up for the dvd because it really saps some of the energy from the concert. Still a great show though!

I love when Prince and Cat hit a move together. Best band ever for so many reasons. And didn’t he know it. “We da best!”

Good point. I mentioned it towards the beginning of the show, but they definitely came to life as the show went on and Prince and the band are obviously having a blast up there.

Maybe the crowd is turned down but it's still strangely quiet. Even at the beginning when he's talking it sounds silent and when he finishes there is a gentle polite applause. No complaints, still a great show of course.

it's a small crowd. That paid $200 per person.. it's not a regular concert crowd. And there's not many of them. That makes for a different atmosphere. Kinda like an aftershow. The small club crowd also doesn't sound loud. Personally, I prefer the crowd to not be in the recording much. They get in the way. I love the Utrecht show as well, that's about as loud as a crowd should ever be, imo.

This is pretty fucking great. Not what I expected either (in a good way). Good move for them to change it up so much from the movie. Anxious to play on it a proper sound system since my laptop is less than ideal. If I Was Your Girlfriend brought me to literal tears and reminded me of my ex wife. Jesus Christ that took me off guard.

That may have been one of the more fresh versions of WDC I've ever heard.

LOL at the "modern technology" balloon malfunction.

Is it me or is the crowd a little low energy?

My only real nitpick with it is that it drags out the costume change parts a little too much and I might just be the only one here who doesn't think Cat adds much of anything.

One thing I've always wondered about this tour is how much of those drum beats are sequenced? I know he programs certain drums to make weird sounds and they're electronic but on certain tracks, it almost has to be programmed (Hot Thing comes to mind).

I like the overlay/double exposure camera work for the most part but wish the show had a few more different angles and close ups. I think I can count 3 (maybe 4) cameras tops.

These are really minor complaints though. Good job all around and very happy to learn it wasn't just a rehash of the film.

...

God I miss this man.

EDIT: Also MILES DAVIS SIGHTING!

I’d agree with most other artists, but master showmen like Prince, James Brown, etc they need the crowd noise heard with the way they interact with the crowd (all them chants Prince does sound awkward af when we don’t hear anyone chanting back)

Band is tight as hell and watching them follow Prince's queues is masterful.

Cracked me up when the keyboards went soundless ("aint playin shit")

Kudos to the estate for putting this out. We're 2 for 2 on new live stuff between this and the 1999 show

I've been listening to this show for decades...amazing to finally SEE it! Just so amazing from beginning to end and watching Miles clearly giving respect had me tearing up a little.

Everybody has brought up some of the points I would make but you get the vibe that they were glad to be done with the tour. Sheila drool

Glad people are able to finally see this and it's just not the select few of us who have always known. While it's cool to feel a part of something special that people don't know about, it's better that everybody in the world knows.

Musical inspiration when we all need it the most...

Been watching the concluding "Beautiful Night" jam of this on bootleg VHS for decades, and it is my absolute favorite live Prince performance. He is being so REAL, and I feel like this is the closest, that we will see, to what it was like working with him when he was not in public "Prince character". The music, the dances, the jokes, the mood... it's all so intense.

People who wonder why The Black Album is considered dark (or even evil)...

When I used to show my non-Prince friends this long ending of the New Years concert video, many would remark on how dark and even scary the mood was. It was like some glimpse into a midnight funk universe unrolling in a secret crypt somewhere unrolling with ferocious wicked energy.

That's also what the Black Album sounded like to Prince neutral ears in 1988. "Bob George" was actually a bit "horror" to mainstream top 40 ears.

I kind of want to edit footage of this video into a music video for "2 Nigs United 4 West Compton".

This show solidified for me that The Revoution was Earth, Wind & Fire...and SOTT band was Parliament Funkadelic.

Both equal in music virtuosity, but one makes you do the gasface (in a good way) when you hear them jam.
