i can't wait to buy this on friday.
i know " Moonbeam Levels" was on 4ever.
But i still think it's one of his best from
that era. At the start of his Minneapolis Sound
i can't understand when fans say it's one of his worst.
Comparing it to " Jughead" is ridiculous.
It was one of his best unreleased songs, for years.

Pointless disc in my opinion since I only listened to 4 tracks on here: Irresistible Bitch, Horny Toad, Howcome U Don’t Call Me Anymore and the extended special dance mix of Little Red Corvette.

Instead of these pointless edits and mono mixes there was plenty of space for other tracks that didn’t make the cut such as Fox Trap, Jerk Out, Boom Boom (Can’t U Feel the Beat of My Heart), U Should Be Mine, the original 1982 versions of Raspberry Beret, Strange Relationship, ICNTTPOYM, and whatever else was recorded around that time that we don’t know about.

Other than that, an excellent release!

If their intentions were to release those tracks (except for Raspberry Beret - which they could not find), they would just add a third disc of outtakes. They may have other plans for those.

I've always appreciated the B-Sides/7"/12" mixes disc as I'm a completist. It's a box set so it makes sense to have everything together.

I recently put a set together of Prince's radio edits. Most of these were on that set but I love that they put the mono mixes on here as in 1982 the local top 40 station I listened to was still on AM radio and this is how I would have first heard these songs! I also like the video versions of "Automatic" and "Let's pretend we're married". Now I'm wondering if I should add them to my set or not...

Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.

I agree. I dont get these releases.

The Purple Rain disk of these mixes is still in its case. Why would I want to listen to a radio edit of my favourite songs!? confused

A disc with outtakes and alternate versions of all songs on 1999 would be far more interesting than this promo mixes and b-sides disc. There must be plenty of this in the vault so I don't understand why it's not included.

Yeah, it looks like I'm going to my pre-Y2K days and will actually buy this physical product instead of downloading or streaming. Can't recall the last time I went into a store and purchased a CD but I will on Friday...

They will propably be released with another re-issue of ''1999'' within 3 years, when the album hits its 40 year.

(let's hope for that...)

-

I think it's argueable too that they want to keep some stuff for future releases...

I also don't understand the use of mono mix versions, I really don't, absolutely don't !

Push the stereo button on your stereo to mono, and there you have it.

Possibly something in the mix is done slightly different with those mono mixes, but, that's certainly not what Prince fans want.

Basically, quite bizarre too to shove that in the throats of us Prince fans and have to pay for it, and certainly for those non-Prince fans who might possibly buy this.

Maybe the vault is filled with thousands of mono mixes, promo mixes, edit versions, and bad remixes done by house-dj's... razz And it's that what they mean with so many releases in the vault, and we're totally wrong. O.M.G. Just imagine, it's all a joke ! wink))

D'oh! Sorry, I misunderstood. It's the MONO mixes that were on promos.

One could easily make an argument for a "dedicated" mono mix, particularly those created prior to 1968 when mono was the most predominant format for both home and broadcast--but certainly not a 1980s fold-down mono mix, which is exactly as you describe, just combining the channels with nothing unique to the actual mix itself.

Wrong thread, but the vocal is kind of esoteric/pretentious/aloof sounding.... even if you like it, you don't hear it? Definitely more aquired taste vs. hit worthy. Production-wise it's basically the birth of that definitive purple Minneapolis sound sure, but by not releasing it immediately upon conception its languishing for decades in the Vault makes sense because his future explorations with the sound make one of his first experiments sound dated and undercooked.

But I'dve taken it over "Free", absolutely. No question.

The inclusion of mono versions of 7" mixes is unesscary in my opinion. They're the same as the regular 7" mixes but with only 1 channel.

Also, has anyone heard the Australian Automatic 7" mix before?

There's a nasty dropout at 60 seconds on Little Red Corvette 7" edit. It sounds like it's kind of there on 4ever too, but it's barely noticable there. On here it's bad.

so the edit of D.M.S.R. 5:14 is longer than the edit from Risky Busisness edit (5:04) *Amazon now says it will get here on Wednesday!* Where was the 5:14 version from?

Since you don't have the disc yet I double checked:

My rip of the CD has the track at 5:06.

The MP3 I downloaded last week has it at 5:14. But, when I play it, the last 10 seconds are silence.

Maybe it's not so nasty then biggrin But I'm listening on headphones and the word "gonna" at 60 seconds on CD2 track 5 sounds very mangled compared to all other versions.

Same for Wednesday delivery from Amazon. Think it has something to do with that we're in the D/FW area?
