What happened to that other huge thread? There was some productive and quality discussion on here - I get not wanting leaks to be shared however why not just delete those specific leak-requesting posts? Anyways, I guess I am stoked for this release nonetheless, I don't even care about downloading the leak as I have purchased my boxset and want to explerience the music with the booklets in my hands. New interview with Michael Howe:
https://www.ilikeyouroldstuff.com/news/interview-prince-archivist-michael-howe-on-prince-vault
“I would say the vast majority of The Vault is not officially released,” Howe says. “It’s difficult to quantify, but there is a lot more unreleased material than there is released material - I can tell you that much. As well as Prince music in The Vault, there are sessions with an array of other artists and players whose work intersected with Prince’s work. I can think of one collaboration with an artist in The Vault no one even knows about.

. This is obvious if we're talking about all recordings (incl. concerts, rehearsals, soundchecks, etc.) . If we're talking about studio outtakes only, then this is not so obvious. So Michael Howe might be saying something interesting, here. I'm not sure.

Some of Prince’s attempts at humour from this period no longer translate, particularly in a post #MeToo environment. Howe explains that despite the wish to create an exhaustive overview of Prince’s 1999-era output, unreleased songs “Extraloveable” and “Lust U Always” were left off the package. “Even though those two tracks are resolutely of the era, both tracks contain somewhat lamentable rape references. Given the egregiously insensitive candour of the lyrics and our lack of wanting to take creative license by editing or manipulating the tracks, we decided not to include them. Even though we want to shed light on the entire creative period, we certainly don’t want to be inflammatory or insensitive. We didn’t think it was right to include them.” Dude, I get the lyrics are off-putting but its just music. Prince was doing it for shock-value. That’s all you have to say while explaining it. And so what if a couple journalists write a couple articles about it? Hardly anyone will care. People are still gonna buy the music! Do you really think its gonna be a national story tomorrow (“BREAKING NEWS: newly surfaced recordings from Prince’s legendary vault reveals that he glamorized sexual abuse”), of course not! No one cares! No one will take those lyrics seriously bruh Michael Howe, do the right thing and release these two tracks ASAP. Just a one-off download. That way it won’t “over-shadow” any precious release as you said And if anything i learned about the media these days is correct, it’s that any publicity is good publicity. The general public just don’t agree with much many journalists anymore. They take whatever ridiculous things journalists say, then form their own opinion. Women love these songs. That should tell you everything. They know he wasn’t serious with those lyrics

So what about “I sincerely wanna fuck the taste outta your mouth”? Prince was a sexual lyricist full stop. Double standards and in not releasing them they have actually ‘edited’ Prince!

I am grateful they chose that path vs. editing por manipulating. I haven't compared note for note with the mixdowns we had on boots, but my impression is that the outtakes here are free of any of the manipulations that upset some of us on past releases. I guess the subtext here is "in some years, when the Meetoo hysteria has calmed down and our society has grown past this moral crusade, we will hopefully be able to reconsider and release the tracks as they are". I'm glad Howe commented on the glaring omissions of Extraloveable and Lust U Always. We all suspected the reason why, and now it's confirmed. I don't think stand-alone releases for just these songs would be smart at this point, but maybe in the future they can surprise us with them, like the I Feel For You demo.

The general public just don’t agree with much many journalists anymore. They take whatever ridiculous things journalists say, then form their own opinion. Women love these songs. That should tell you everything. They know he wasn’t serious with those lyrics They should have been released... I mean, it was ok for Do Yourself a Favor to be included right? A song where he tells an ex-girlfriend that he will kick her ass for walking away from him... Plus, in the context of Lust U Always it’s in the chorus where he says that he’s seeing a psychologist “my analyst assured me that u were just a phase” Meaning that his lust is so out of hand that it gives him mental problems. It’s not condoning rape so much is it? In Extra Lovable well... it’s pretty clear and explicit. Be that as it may, it does not mean that Prince was condoning rape or telling his listeners to go out there and start raping people. Besides, that song is pretty tame compared to anything by Eminem for example. Art is subjective and should not be censored and I’m glad they chose to not go down that route. However, part of Prince’s legacy was to shock people and to stir up Controversy especially in the early days. For those potential buyers with sensibilities at the mere utterance of the word rape, that’s what parental advisory stickers and disclaimers are for... just saying. At least mutual consent is kind of implied within that song, whereas it's not in the unreleased tracks.... because rape, by definition, lacks consent. Even Prince himself knew he pushed the envelope too far with those lyrics, hence their exclusion from any releases.

I have my physical copy now therefore I can discuss it without fear of the mods. So many highlights. The vinyl makes me listen in sequence rather than graviting towards the tracks that are new to me. Moonbeam Levels sounds better. Vagina is my favourite today

Like a half Batman/Joker hybrid I am off two minds about this. - 1. Let's not let the lyrics overshadow and become THE negative focal point of this glorious new release. We finally have a box set of the caliber we have been wanting, let's not have anything spoil it... - 2. They should move out of the way and let the art speak for itself. That's what Prince would have done.* - *Or would he? He often censored his own material, or completely reworked/released songs to navigate new roads in space and time.. -
Let me ask you all this: Would you rather these songs with the word rape edited out, or not released at all? [Edited 11/26/19 7:34am] "New Power slide...."

. I'm surprised they didn't just fade the tracks out before Prince gets to the monologues. Both songs run a little long anyway, you could play 3/4 of what exists and still have a classic pop song.

Interesting, I can hear the similarities but it's hardly the most original riff or rhythm and my theory is that Yah, You Know is his first attempt at adapting Freeze Frame by J Geils Band, which eventually culminated in Lets Go Crazy.

Prince wanted the old extralovable obliterated from history ... that is why he released 3 new versions ... he did his best to bury the old version as deep as possible in the search engine ... a black man using the R word is as detrimental to popular success as a white guy using the N word ... that is just how it is ... GnR deleted a song on reissue due to similar concerns ... I personally would not mind if they released Extralovable as a fade out edit or even just cut a few phrases ... in fact I WISH we could get a tony m free version of the symbol album ... a properly sequenced crystal ball set .. a stripped down version of emacipation that sounds less kmart and more organic .. a rainbow children without darth vader and an Art Official Age without the awful brickwall mastering Trouble is once we open that door we gon get questluv n timberlake tryin to duet and remix errthang ... anyway .. glad i got my boots as it’s all gravy from here on out

Regarding Extraloveable. Wasnt it recorded after the sessions because he states "Hey Dez, do you like my band?" etc. in a tease for Dez leaving the fold. Dez left after the 1999 tour. So why would they include it on a 1999 re-release? "Climb in my fur."
