Rearrange is an early favorite....love this track already!

And a double yes! To my ears it has similar parts as Lady Cab Driver and

Private Joy. Which is hella cool.

One last thing. I'm really digging the guitar playing on the vault stuff.

Oh, and How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore ? Take 2... Holy mother of God. cry music cry Actually I've never heard this version before...Man. music

Rest in Peace Bettie Boo. See u soon.

Bold Generation and Rearrange are cool but they both should be cut down to like the 3:30 minute range. Nice jams but they don’t go anywhere tbh. When i make playlists, i’ll edit them down so they don’t take up so much time. Too many good tracks here

Vagina is cool guitar track but anyone believing the lyrics are serious got something wrong with them. Prince wrote songs through the pov of many characters. Here he was obviously taking a piss.

This would have been a perfect release if they had included the two best outtakes from this era. But nah lol lets not take any risks like P did back in the day

Yes I am struggling to find them - I thought I would wait for the release day (also Black Friday here in Australia) - but JB don't even have it on their website (the LP or CD sets) - they only have the single vinyl release and Sanity still have it on pre-order and say 1-2 months for delivery !!!!

Not very good sad

I have ordered now through Warner Australia. Probably safer than JB or Sanity. Last I checked, they have 7 vinyl sets and 11 CD sets left.

Thank you, I shall try that too

Thank you Prince for every note you left behind 💜

With regards to Extraloveable, I found out something interesting on twitter yesterday.
.
According to Dr Funkenberry, Prince had intended to place Extraloveable on the album but it ended up being replaced by D.M.S.R.
.
"1999" replaced "Turn It Up" and "D.M.S.R." replaced "Extraloveable".....
Link: https://twitter.com/drfun...2595616768
.
Interview/convo we had. The discussion came about over him bringing up the updated version of "Extraloveable" (now xtraloveable) & i asked bout the lyrics. More was discussed re 1999 & he actually allowed me to take notes about it. I did let the estate know a year ago about it.
Link: https://twitter.com/drfun...5219868672
.
This got me thinking. Isn't it strange how D.M.S.R. has Lisa screaming "Somebody help me" at the end of it? I'd dismissed it as a random way to end the dance track as the scream didn't appear to have any context. However, now I've learned that it replaced Extraloveable in the sequence, could it be that the scream was a call back to the song D.M.S.R. replaced?
.
Maybe (and this is just a little speculation on my part) the higher ups at Warner had concerns over the bathtub sequence in Extraloveable and encouraged Prince to switch the track. If so, Lisa's part on D.M.S.R. could have been Prince's tongue in cheek response.

That's spooky.

Last night I did a play list for an old school friend. When we were 14 we were really into the 1999 album. He's a causal fan now but asked me about a '1999 II' from the new set.

I picked a track list for an 80 minute set by stripping out the new vault tracks that sounded demo or unfinished and in the result, I had Turn It Up as track 1 and Extralovable as Track 5.

He got this:

1. Turn It Up

2. Purple Music

3. Moonbeam Levels

4. Vagina

5. Extralovable

6. Feel U Up

7. Irresistable Bitch

8. If It'll Make U Happy

9. Teacher, teacher

10. Possessed

11. Rearrange

12. How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore? (Take 2)

I think he'll love it.

Fascinating to consider, actually.

.

I would say that this album had A LOT of allusions to rather aggressive sexual predation. Not just rape stuff in EL and LUA, but also the last bit of Something in the Water, the last moment in DMSR, "fuck the taste out of your mouth" which could be interpreted as overtly aggressive, Jill taking it pretty rough in Lady Cab Driver, the BDSM imagery in Automatic, the "turbulents" in International Lover might be referencing these moments, "so you'll NEVER FORGET", "the more you scream, the nastier I get", the original "Irresistible Bitch" is overtly aggro. I'm missing some references, but you get the idea.

.

Knowing all this, it's fascinating that MH called the rape lyrics "lamentable" - as if this wasn't part of the character he was playing during 1999.

.
I agree, and would also point to the very first line of the whole album, “don’t worry I won’t hurt you, I only want you to have some fun”, which is ominous at best, with its Darth Vader vocal effect. This is countered by the last line of that song, “mommy why does everybody have a bomb?”, said high pitched like a child.
.
One odd thing I noticed about this rerelease is that every article talks about what the album did: this is where Prince went pop, or this is where Prince became successful. Nobody mentions the incredible themes of the album; chaos at the end of the world, disturbing violence everywhere, and the listener is going to just keep dancing, because this music is too good.
.
Given that everyone actually feels that the world might end soon, you’d think this might be a no-brainer.
.
And ya, that context is how you approach those two tracks, which to my mind are the only two tracks that mention rape from the predators POV. They were correctly removed from the original album. It’s a shame they weren’t included on this release.

WTF!?

(yes I did not watch unboxing vids and such)

Why oh why did they use digipack like trash in this set?

That spoils it totally when opeing the set.

Is it so hard to follow proper standards?
Proper packaging?

What’s the difference between digipaks for CDs and heavy paper stock used for sleeves for vinyl for decades upon decades? Never really understood how one is classic/great and the other is somehow cheap.

Jewel cases one can replace.

Cardboard trash one cannot (or can at a greater price).

(especially when out of print())

Is that so hard to fathom?

.

When doing a project as '1999 deluxe' I am quite sure that the numbers would result in a nice discount on jewel cases.

The new set is fantastic and (nearly) everything I could have hoped for. Obviously there are two glaring omissions, but I don’t think there really was a correct answer re: what to do with them and I think Howe handled the situation well. As for what is actually on the set, I think the new master is the revelation it’s been described as, and it’s great to have so many old bootlegged favorites in sometimes startlingly better quality. And, while I will most likely never ever listen to it again in full, the second disc is nice to have and I think it’s important that it’s there.

Picked up my copy, 5CD/DVD, this morning.

My favorite local wrecka stow ordered a few copies, only got 1, and set it aside for me. It was $60, but the only other place in town that stocked it, FYE, have it for $65. It's a tradition for me to buy day of release in store, so, even though Amazon has it at $54, I'm happy with my purchase. Can't figure out why the official online store wants $70, though, that's just crazy.

Best Buy & Target didn't stock it. Didn't check Wal-Mart because even if they have it, odds are the packaging would be beat to shit... I'm not having that.

As for the set, I love the packaging, I love the design, can't wait to soak up the contents.

To all the labels, estates, whatever... do more of these.

Not dead, not in prison, still funkin'...

Anyone knows when to expect the remastered boxset? Live concert sounds fine though.

That said, very happy with the overall content, i just wonder how it would've sound if Brian Gardner would still be seated at Bernie's.

Mine has not arrived (ordered from the Estate site). I wanted to get a copy today and I cannot find it anywhere in Baltimore. Our big record store doesn't even have it. No luck at Target, Barnes and Noble or Best Buy. I bet a lot of Black Friday shoppers would have purchased it.

The remaster as a whole is great and the music included is superb. They did a great job on this release. The concert is a nice little gift, but I do have to say that as far as Prince being very careful about the quality of songs he released, he was spot on. The outtakes and unreleased tracks were left off the record and locked in a vault for a reason. A very good reason. Some made it out later, but only when they were good enough.
