Why is Come so under appreciated?

I’ve been really into the Come album this year and for some reason always skipped it in his discography. This seems to be a record that fans and critics overlook for prince as it’s between the b-sides and the gold experience.

First off Letitgo is an amazing single! That song makes me feel so good and badass whenever I put on at the gym razz I know it was a top 40 hit but most people don’t remember it getting any airplay. Papa and Race are two is his best social commentary songs (don’t abuse your children or they will turn out like me)
And loose is funky as hell with a near heavy metal guitar solo.

The whole album is solid but is still widely
Overlooked by fans and critics.
Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

All music is shit music and no music is real- gunsnhalen

Because people bought into the idea that it was a throwaway album, much like Chaos & Disorder, when nothing could have been further from the truth. A testament to folks not wanting to think for themselves, and let others do the thinking for them. Seems to be a constant, but more prevalent now than ever before in history. Anyway, I digress a little bit, Come is an incredible album, and many folks missed out by dismissing it so fast.

I think the art and the whole 1958-1993 business didn't help, either - I mean the album just sort of looks like a drag. Which is a shame, since there's really so much fun being had on there.

It has some really good stuff on it. Pheromone is a personal favourite of mine. There's a nice balance of commercial tracks (Space, Race, Let It Go) along with some interesting theatrical pieces (Papa & Solo), similar to the Around The World In A Day album that respect.
.
The only thing that annoys me about it is all those segues that were made by cutting Poem into segments.
.
I'm trying to get my hands on the alternative configurations as I suspect I'll probably prefer them. I know there is an earlier version circulating that was sequenced to a promo CD, and Poem is the first track. I'm hoping that means that the remaining tracks are left untainted. Unfortunately that version doesn't contain the title song 'Come', which is a shame. I haven't found a copy myself yet, but hopefully it won't elude me for long.

I don't think it's under appreciated. I don't know where people get these ideas about this song or that album being less appreciated. Maybe you're just not hearing from the people who do love it. Find your COME tribe. No one's overlooked it. It's been reviewed by critics and fans alike, and in every goddamn "best of Prince" list on the Org, there's at least one or two COME tracks on it.

I love the record. Sexual, social, conceptual, dance, funk, rock. I don't mind the darker gothic mood of it. *That's where part of the conceptual feel comes into it.) It's pure Prince, front to back.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Plus, the video for Pheromone is borderline porn. So there's that. lol

Prince deliberately positioned it that way - can you blame folks for going along with it?

Can you imagine one for "Come"'s album version? It wouldn't have been that fashion show meets Uncle George's BBQ & Ice Cream mash up we saw in the BEAUTIFUL experience.

PS the extra extended bars and guitar bits in the "Race" video that aren't on the album are worth the price of admission.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

The great disappointment was the title track, the original (?) version is in my opinion one of his greatest songs, the released version would have been a great remix. One of his biggest mistakes.

The same one year later with The Gold Experience and Days Of Wild, the New Power Generation lead song, his greatest groove, his greatest live song.

Is there more than one video? The one I've seen is pretty tame.

Yeah I love that era of the NPG. The album itself feels a bit thin, disjointed and self-indulgent, like a bunch of spare parts, it didn't really flow as an album for me but I still dig it. Also, remember this was 1994... there was so much great music that year, I have to admit that Come probably wouldn't even rank in my top 50 albums that year. It's so out of sync with what was happening back then.

Personally I'd improve the album by swapping the title track for the original techno version from "The Beautiful Experience" TV special, maybe swap Space for the Universal Love Remix version, and swap out Papa and Orgasm for something stronger. Race sounds a bit cheesy and "on the nose", but it is pretty funky if you can get past the lyrics and the tin-can guitar sound.

Blame may be a harsh word, "didn't think it through" may be a better way to say it. I didn't fall for Prince's promotion propoganda, knew right off the rhetoric was all just to flip WB the bird. Prince just doesn't officially release stuff 'that he deems' substandard. So yeah, I called BS right off the bat.

would have been a superb album opener, that original version. and then close the album off
with "strays of the world" and perhaps tag the 'album version' of "come" on as a secret track?

but yeah, the album would work better with the original version of "come" opening things up,
hitting hard and yet not overstaying it's welcome (like the album version does, it goes on way
too long for an opening track), segueing into "space", into "pheromone", into "loose" which
segues into "papa", then "race" then "dark", "solo", "letitgo" and "strays of the world" omfg

ditch the silly segues, include the slightly longer version of "race" with that great extended
bit at the end love

yeah, that's one heck of a great album. it also is a great album as it is, but it could have been
a better one and a more concise one. opening with that long winded version of Come and then
closing with 'orgasm' sort of feels like it has no real beginning and no end. thus feeling a bit
disappointing on the whole 'album experience' trip.

I love the album and have always appreciated it. However, had Prince released the original 1993 configuration he'd have likely had a classic on his hands. Here's hoping that some day it's released.

It's tainted by the 'contract filler' tag, and P himself saying it was old and TGE was the new stuff. Even though he was still playing tracks from it on the 'Gold tour.'

.

We'd all like to tinker with the track-list or versions used etc but I'll always love it regardless.

This.

Prince himself sabotaged the success of the album.

nod yeah, that was a problem. There was a big rumor back then that Prince would fulfill his contractual obligations by giving Warners the subpar, leftover stuff in his vaults while saving the great, new stuff for his independently released albums. Thus,Come and Chaos And Disorder are often considered to be throwaway albums.
