I don't think he deliberately sabotaged the album. I think he had just moved on by the time it was released. Most of the tracks had been recorded in early to mid 1993, but the album was not released until August 1994. He originally wanted the 3 Disc set The Dawn but WB would not allow it. Seems this refusal was the "straw that broke the Camel's back" with Prince and WB.

The segues ruin what would otherwise be a good Prince album.

Play with the track listing a little by changing the version of Come and adding in Interactive, What's My Name and Strays of the World and you have IMO a very good Prince album.

Poem could have been "reconstructed" or not split and been a weird hidden track (after a lengthy silent segue) and I think we would have thought it was cool (the way it would have caught us out with the embarrassing orgasm noises).

You could also (as suggested earlier by someone) had the released version of Come as a hidden track (though I prefer the idea of a Come maxi-single).

I don't think he deliberately sabotaged the album. I think he had just moved on by the time it was released. It's still so hard to believe ALL this music came from ONE PERSON! Prince(r.i.p.) was the most prolific artist that ever lived on "PLANET EARTH"...

Seems likely because the "my name is No One" doesn't quite fit with the overall vernacular of the preceding prose. And I would like to see the original piece Huang wrote, just as a reference.

For Prince to sing acapella is something we'd not heard like that since "For You." The only sidenote would be the backward bit after "Darling Nikki." And his voice was so on point and pure in "Solo." Just beautiful.



Agree. It’s not a track I listen to regularly but it’s eerily beautiful.
It fits the albums dark vibe and artwork perfectly

because it's not that good that's why... a couple good songs and that's about it. You are less than 3 years out of the D&P album, 2 years away from love symbol album and this is what he gives? This album killed him commercially and he never recovered.

He done fucked up, he should of continued making better quality of music, fulfilled his contract it, he still would of had a broader fanbase and he could of done under the symbol...such a waste.

I've noted before but since we're on topic, I did a remix configuration called Come Again. I replaced the Poem segues with new ocean sounds. I slightly altered the artwork for it, too. I used a program created for DJs to create mixes. It's very useful when re-seguing ocean sounds or editing pieces of songs together (like in the title track and "Loose!").

Great: Pheromone, LetItGo

Good: Space, Come

OK: Dark, Race, Loose

Poop: Papa, Orgasm, Solo

Sounds like your basic Prince album post TGE to be honest. This was sort of a pattern with him for a good, long while.

Also, there's a depressing lack of guitar work (or any other real instrumental prowess) on display here. No bass, drums, keys, axe or piano jumps out at you at all. There's 2 totaly straight up, self indulgent, experimental throwaway tracks and an almost total lack of overall energy, grind or "punch" to most of these songs. Nothing "pops" much or has that weird extra layer of creativity that Prince was so good at. Headphones don't reveal much of anything buried, subtle or hidden that our man could almost always be counted on to deliver - which is REALLY odd.

The songwriting, aside from Pheromone and Let It Go is rather subdued and, dare I say it, almost lazy. Nothing jumps out or feels visceral and exciting - worthy of an immediate second listen. "Dark" is another by the numbers ballad we've all heard 100 times. It's fine but uttery rote by this point in his career and given his catalog. Find me more than one or two solid hooks, stand out solos, memorable melodies, catchy choruses, stellar musicianship or even some clever production.

At this stage of the game I'm prepared to say that the album is actually somewhat overrated, especially within the community.

I think NPS is better. It's at least more fun and offers us "Wasted Kisses" and "Come On", which are better and more memorable than anything here.

Introspective tracks like "Papa", and "Solo" are exactly what we love about Prince; when he gets personal. "Letitgo" falls right in that slot, too. "Race" is almost expected since it's Prince being socially conscious about the world around him (which started as far back as "Uptown", "Partyup", and "Annie Christian"). Sexual romps like "Pheromone", "Come", and "Loose!" are par for the course in Prince sexuality. It's Prince goth, and it's a black and white gem that stands up to Parade's versatility and variety.

See, this is why musical interpretation is so subjective.....while I do love Wasted Kissses (mainly for the dark and foreboding lyrical content), I would pick any song on Come over the song Come On - talk about lazy lyrics! "what you need is some real lovin' instead of these young as fools, I got the butter for your muffin, just need the keys to the room..." BLAAAAGGHHH. Very surprised you would pick that song over songs like Dark or Space

I think the Come album is a great representation of the mood and mindset Prince was in at the time he recorded the songs. He's telling a story of sex, love lost, and loneliness with Race and Papa included which are in keeping with the somber mood of the album.

I do think that if you're in the mood for an upbeat record that is heavy on guitar and drums this would not be the go-to choice. However, if you are in a more serious and/or melancholy mood this one will do the trick smile

I agree with your review.The album just seems....lazy....this is the type of album that Prince could do in his sleep.I like a few tracks ("Space" and "Letitgo") but this album is not nearly as interesting and amazing as what came before it (Love Symbol) and what came after (TGE).

Just as a note, "Wasted Kisses" is the best thing on NewPowerSoul. "Come On"'s lyrics are some of the more embarrassing stuff he's ever said in a song. I get that NPG records are more street and nuanced with an urban vibe and syntax, but that's just stupid shit.

I do believe that the mood of COME is what throws folks. Prince's records all have a theme to them or certain musical ideas. COME does too, it's just a darker gothic vibe. In some ways, it's very 90s. We wanted an acoustic record or piano record from Prince for years, and when we got it, they were 50/50 on the feedback. Was anyone wishing for a goth-inspired dance record? No, but we got it anyway, and it's fucking brilliant. COME, and The Gold Experience are siblings as much as they are the antithesis of each other. One is darker, full of shadows; one feels brighter, crisp. They're each other's relief.

They're both brilliant.

I think the record's first five song stretch is up there with many of his other masterpieces. "Come," to "Space," to "Pheromone," in particular, go so hard. I think "Race," is a misstep, especially considering the songs he was leaving on the table. "Orgasm," is fine. It's a segue that's allowed its own track and, while memorable, feels like Prince indulging his worst impulses, a cynical dig at both listener and record label.

Still, this is one of his most cohesive sounding albums of the 90s and I think its production has stood the test of time in a much less cringe-y fashion in comparison to Gold or Emancipation.

The songs he could have put on this record are astounding, though. Any of "Peach," "Pope," "TMBGITW," "What's My Name?" "Strays of the World," "Endorphinmachine," and "Dolphin," in place of "Race," or "Orgasm," might have lifted this album substantially in the eyes of critics or fans. As it is, it's a testament to Prince's peak that he was able to cobble together an Eff You album and still have it sound as fresh and interesting as most of this record does.

What COME has done, was capture the 90's sound element of the time yet when you play it today it still sounds fresh and somewhat modern and not outdated.

Put The Gold Experience on, yes there are some great songs, great musicianship, but the production sounds so dated and corny when you play it today. It was overproduced that album, and it takes away from the essence of musicanship. TGE is an outdated album that DOES NOT hold up well anymore, maybe for the time it did, 5 years after it did, but now, it sounds severly dated.

I think Orgasm is on there as a message to a former lover. After the “climax” he says “I love you” just before the song ends. I think it’s interesting and cool the way he sets up the scene (each watching each other) while he speaks to the woman. It’s an experience more than a song for sure, and he creates quite a visual for the listener.

The Solo lyric is “I’m so low, solo, my name is no one”. He announced the name change to the Symbol not long after this song was written, so I think the lyric ties in with that.

I agree with your thoughts on the songs. Although, in the song Race I do love the lyric “race, in the space, I mark human. Cut me, cut you, both the blood is red.” Such a creative way to say that we are all the same regardless of our color, and our inside color is all the same - red. This one sounds great live - specifically the April ‘93 after show in San Fran. He did many of the songs on the Come album.

Will have to have another listen of this. Absolutely hated it when it came out, and Papa is the only song from it that ever gets played from it nowadays by me. Fairly amazed to see all the glowing comments about it tbh, was the first and maybe only time I was embarrassed being a P fan, it felt so out of touch with what was going on at the time.

Uh, but in that era of music purchasing, did people really know they liked it until they purchased it? Or did you buy an album to find out if you liked it?

I also can't remember the return policy as it relates to listener preferences at the time.

I already heard the majority of the songs at Glam Slam. So when I bought the album I still was quite entralled by them. Even though the versions were different. It's still in regular rotation in my Chocolate Muziq Box.

Love the released Come album, but that tracklist for the musical is beyond incredible.

BTW...”Dark” is a Top 20 Prince song...truly underrated.

Yes it is! That haunting organ chord played by Morris Hayes led by Prince's(r.i.p.) top of the line lead & background vocals made it another classic Prince(r.i.p.) ballad.

He done fucked up, he should of continued making better quality of music, fulfilled his contract it, he still would of had a broader fanbase and he could of done under the symbol...such a waste.


I really like Come but I was a bit disappointed when it came out cuz it was not as strong album as D&P and prince. The same feeling I had when Musicology was released, it was very weak compared to TRC

TGE is an outdated album that DOES NOT hold up well anymore, maybe for the time it did, 5 years after it did, but now, it sounds severly dated.

While I do agree that TGE has some moments that are overproduced,it's still a stronger,more vibrant album than Come.I think it still holds up quite well."Eye Hate U" is a freakin' masterpiece! smile

I think what you classify as "vibrant" is what some of us are referring to when we use words like "cheese" or "corny." Very "80s" for 1995, I'm familiar with very little 90s music that sounds "vibrant" like it.

That being said, yes, I do agree, "Eye Hate You" as a composition is probably better than the entirety of Come... but Come is still a better album (and better sounding album) than TGE.
