I don't think she's dumb. What's happened is that she got into an emotional relationship at 16 years old, and married at 18 with a man who wanted to love and be normal. But he let his insecurities grab hold of him every time. He ran from conflict under the guise of "just living in positivity, I don't live in the past" rainbows and unicorns. It traumatized her. It would anyone. Hell, having a baby die traumatized both of them. When you have trauma to that degree, you're often - mentally - stuck at that age. (It's also very true for childhood victims of sexual abuse, too.) I believe for a long while, Mayte was just sorta stuck at 17 or 18. She grew up too fast, got married too young, all that business etc etc. Prince loved as hard as he denied shit. I don't think any woman was ever going to bring him down to earth - despite his attempts at normality in interviews, etc stating as much - because he'd lived a life of such privilege (the kind that comes with fame and money), that to put him in a position of a "regular" person was just impossible. Even he couldn't do it to himself.

Mayte also probably thought dating unstable rock stars was her lot in life, or (moreover) that it was her 'normal', so why would she look for anyone else? After you date Prince, everything else - for a while - pales in comparison. Even Tommy Lee.

As far as Carmen, Prince was obsessed with her, and she was sorta right to GTFO of there when she did.

Mayte did not marry Prince at 18. They first met when she was 16, going on 17. She did not arrive in MN until she was 17, almost 18. Prince had Carmen E in MN with him at that time, and he was with other women as well - Robin Power, Lori Elle (Diamond) and more. Mayte was 22 when she married Prince in 1996. If anyone is to blame for Mayte's lot in life it would be her parents - specifically her Mother. Shame on her for shipping such a young kid off to live in a very unfamiiliar place and work in that kind of environment. One of the Engineers there at the time stated she was like a "deer in headlights". I think she was WAY to young to have a baby as well, especially with the lifestyle they led.

I think Prince was obsessed with trying to make Carmen (Tara) a big sex symbol performer like Vanity was back in the early 80's. No doubt he wanted her physically too. But on a deeper level?? Nah, I just don't see it. I think he was too smart for that. He was much smarter than people often think he was, and she would not have challenged him at all. Of course he loved to fool around with the pretty girls, but he needed the intellect as well.
