Prince(r.i.p) could do EVERYTHING EQUALLY! He was NO COMPARISON to Jesse or ANY ONE MUSICIAN on earth or since he left earth to live his afterlife. To say he was a "singer that played" is an insult to his immense talent. I'm here to protect his legacy. Here is what I found on Eric Clapton and how he felt about Prince. It is a radio broadcast from 5/18. He picks songs throughout the interview to play as he discusses his life and career. The last song he picks is Purple Rain. Here is his discussion about it with the host: * Radio Host: "Pick a final song - what song should we go out on?" * Eric Clapton: "Purple Rain" * Radio Host: "Why that song?" * Eric Clapton: " Because he was the King, and that song got to me. Interestingly enough, in the middle of a relapse from drinking, I went to see Purple Rain, and it was in the middle of a relapse - really I had no hope. And that song, his personality and his musicianship and soul gave me hope again." * Also, here is Eric's FB post after Prince's passing: *
* So, I think Eric Clapton, being the "guitar god" that he is, would have been inspired as much or more by Prince's guitar playing than his singing - especially since's Prince's guitar soloing is prominently featured in that song, and througout the film. Prince proved time and time again what an amazing guitar and piano player he was. Great singer and performer?? Absolutely. but he was always a player first. I think he would have said the same.

listening to some of his music, it's ok, produced well but too derivative, just too derivative of Prince. That in itself might not be so bad but everyone was doing it in that brief period before rap fucked everything up. A good song is a good song and I don't hear enough good songs, the guitar was awesome though, he had his own feel, it's not like anyone else's.

i'll check it out, i loved his first album but never got into anything after that, i must say, a lot of people must have just been turned off by how much of a prince clone he was even if he didn't think he was. expressions, wardrobe, music, some folks here said it was the other way around that prince copied jesse. just listened to it, good guitar work but it's no "don't you forget about me" [Edited 2/22/19 17:34pm]

I think Susan Rogers talked about the Jesse/Prince situation during her long interview on Prince Podcast. I'll have to go vack and listen to what she said, but I think it was that someone with his talent could not remain in Prince's shadow or continue to be just a band member, but when he went out on his own his solo work and "look" just wasn't different enough from Ptince to make him stand apart - or something along those lines.

i heard her actually say jesse intentionally copied prince which he denied of course. one thing good about jesse was he didn't bs prince, he'd tell him things and laughed at prince when he tried to say he never heard hendrix play.

as good as he is on guitar, i don't know why he couldn't make a good living as a session musician or doing more sidework like he did with d'angelo. I don't think the business has that many black guitarists with reps even though there are many out here. That's the other thing, just being a good musician doesn't mean much in that business, it really doesn't. The best guitarist I've ever seen, probably better than Prince and Jesse makes a living but isn't rich or famous.

I don't know, i'm a musician but never really been in the business. But i'm sure that people still make a living doing it. However, probably since the british invasion, bands have been more self contained, i have a docu on the wrecking crew, brilliant musicians but they all had a hard time making a living after the sixties, hal blaine, who made millions was reduced to being a security guard. gotta get it while your'e hot, i often wondered if the time knew they'd never have it so good again when the imploded.

We are all lucky to be at the right place at the right time sometimes. Sometimes the wrong place at the wrong time. But as someone who’s lives a little, you have to be grateful for all the opportunities you have had. Not be an ungrateful bitter old man still licking his wounds by what might have been. It’s always about you and your own actions and not blaming others. That’s what makes a man.

Wendy & Lisa talked about their Dads, who were session musicians for all of the big musicians back in the early 60's through the 70's. They used to get a pension based on how many hours they did, so their Dads made a good living. They mentioned that stopped by the 80's.

ya, wendy's dad was in the wrecking crew and in the docu i watched. the wrecking crew was brilliant, far superior to most rock musicians and responsible for many of the riffs and licks that made the songs great. Hard to believe that things changed that much to where they couldn't make a living. Most rock musicians aren't really all that good, some of them are of course but, also, i forget who, it may have been Beck who said he wouldn't allow his daughters to date musicians just because they are so stupid. Lot of truth to that, i don't hang with musicians, never did. [Edited 2/22/19 18:23pm]

They were friends with everyone from Quincy Jones to Leon Russell. Lisa said Rita Coolidge used to babysit her. They had a pretty cool upbringing. Yes, I had posted the Jimi story earlier on this thread. Jesse told that story to Questlove. Very funny. Although, that happened on the night that Jesse first met Prince, so I'm not sure if he continued that dynamic with him. [Edited 2/22/19 19:10pm]

So, they couldn't have more than one player on the Bongos? I seriously doubt she would fabricate that story. Listen to her interview with Questlove on his podcast. She tells the story of touring the Motown museum while on tour with Prince, and there was a picture of her Dad on the wall. It's pretty well known now that her Dad and Wendy's Dad played on most of the big artist's records back then.
