So I'm a little confused about this.

.

There are 3 unreleased versions of MST in circulation:

- One 7:14 version that contains the extended part with the "rollerskate" dialogue

- One 8:45 version that contains an instrumental extended part after a short break

- One 4:26 version that appears to just be the extended instrumental part from the 8:45 version.

The Corporate World tracklist ends with MST then something titled "Rollerskate". Princevaut says that Rollerskate is a 6 minutes continuation of the song. Except there's no such thing. The title would suggest the version on CW is the 7:14 version that would have been divided into 2 tracks on the CD, but Pvault says it's intrumental which, except for the erronous length, suggests it was the 8:45 two-parter.

The original tape clearly circulates so the info is there. Please please somebody solve this mystery.

Sorry to bump my own thread but I just ran into a bootleg version of the whole album (pre-4DF) that actually ends with the 7mn version followed by the 4mn instrumental. Hard to tell 100% if this is the original tape or a fanmade compilation but it occured to me that the album could indeed have ended with the 7mn version of MST followed byt Rollerskate which would then be the 4mn instrumental (the 8mn version would, then, not have been on the album).

I hope someone can help with this, it'd be really cool to sort that out.

Maybe the longer version is a 12" version? (Or from a different configuration?)

I don't know, really. I'm not a big fan of The Time. (But Jesse Johnson... LOVE his albums.)

I'm very sorry I can't give more information, as I'm wondering the same thing. I do have to say that this is one of the best topics in a while on the site. These kind of discussions on facts about Prince's recordings make this site useful next to books like Duane's and sites like Princevault.

That's the config I knew, and I have no idea whether the one I found with the extended instrumental portion at the end is fanmade or not. Running the waves in Audacity didn't show any noticeable difference between the tracks so they might all come from one single source. And anyway it's pretty likely that the released tracks (Shake!, Release It) come from the same tape as the rest, not from the official releases. Now even if the extended portion is on a tape after the album, it doesn't mean it's the album as intended (Parade demos would be an example of a tape containing a configuration + 2 extra tracks from the same sessions). The 6 mn length given by Pvault could totally be a typo, but I can't tell. On the other hand another thing that makes me doubt the 4mn part being Rollerskate is that it starts with the same engine sound as the 7mn version, which is odd if both are back to back, and that this engine sound has a slightly different pitch, which suggests 2 different sources.

Unfortunately many knowledgeable fans don't come here anymore, or not as often as they should, so those threads asking such questions often end-up unanswered

Yes I'd seen it, but no info. I don't think it's much up to date because the tracklist they give for CW does not include Rollerskate, which brings us back to the 7mn version ending it and the possibility of Rollerskate being the second haf of it, despite this contradicting Princevault.

Also, and VERY unfortunately, this website mentions the 11mn long fanmade version as being a genuine outtake. By now it's probably the most commonly circulating version of the track and most people probably have no idea it's fanmade. 4DF did a lot a great things and I'm eternally grateful to them for that, but they really, badly fucked up on that one, and I don't think there's any way to undo the harm that's been done now, unless the Estate and WB release CW officially

I don't know anything about the (8:45) version you mention.

Maybe Rollerskate was a bonus track on the CD and the configuration in circulation is the LP version?

I've just come to realize that Pvault and Uptown before them have missed certain alternate mixes. For example I came to realize that I have two different versions of the MC Flash (Margie Cox) album, where at least 2 tracks are slightly different and it cannot possibly be fanmade. The existence of those 2 configs has been confirmed to me by another collector. I found a few other things.

So the 8:45 version has probably slipped thru the cracks as well. I will list whatever I find that's not there and send them an email eventually. I have to sort out all my outtakes first.

When it comes to Rollerskater IDK. The bonus track thing is a possibility, it would make sense. But IDK

Yeah I tripped too. Those are very minor differences, but they're there.

I will definitely contact Pvault.

It's funny, I think this record isn't much loved among fans. Hell, for some reason Prince chose not to release it on his own label and tried to shop it to other labels, which was unheard of and makes me wonder how himself felt about it. I myself am quite divided about it: I never really got into it but I respect the fact that Prince did an attempt at a hard rock album. If nothing else, it's an oddity in his discography and I would like to see it get an official release..
