The original members of the Time, all 7, reunited for a residency at the Flamingo in Las Vegas in 2008?

You could upgrade your ticket for a VIP Meet and Greet in a roped off area after the show. We took a picture with The Time, and Morris disppeared and the others hung out. I had Jesse sign my "What Time Is It?" record and my Jesse Johnson's Revue record. I asked him about Prince and he had nothing negative to say. But when I asked who he was influenced by as a guitarist:

"Hendrix? Brothers Johnson? Prince?" He responded "no, no and no; I'm influenced by me"

For those who have never met The Time in person, something you'll find peculiar. Other than Jellybean and Jimmy Jam, they're all very short. As a 5'8" man, I was taller than Jesse, Monte, and towered over Morris. It may say differently on the internet, but I think I was taller than all of them other than Jellybean and Jimmy Jam - both towered over me...

Interesting.

I knew that Jesse and Monte were somewhat short, but i had absolutely no ideal that Morris was the height that he is. I read you comments and immediately Googled "Morris Day's height". And it say's that he's 5'7. In looking at photos of Morris, he looks way taller. I have seen The Time in concert(in the 80's), but i couldn't really tell how tall each member was.

Anyway, my bad for going off topic. Carry on...

LOL!! Way taller? Morris is NO MORE THAN 5'4" tops. Swear to God. Can I upload a picture I took with them? Am I allowed to? I don't care what google says. Google is wrong.

Prince also wore 4" heels on stage. And here's what made Prince authentic.

When I was making fun of a Lady Gaga gimmick someone defended her "well, what about Prince and all the stuff he wore?!?!?"

I answered, "here is the difference. Lady Gaga steps off stage and puts on jeans and some New Balance and becomes Debbie again. Prince plays a show in 4" heels, show ends, gets off stage and puts on 5" heels."

Oh yes, lol, the crazies started a petition a week ago, demanding PP remove him from the bill, "Let PP know that we are not going to accept Jesse being on the roster", also encouraging "fans" to email PP, & advising them not to "go & support him at Bunkers". nuts

Oh man how I LOVED that album!!! Summer of '86.....sooooo many great songs that Summer for a 19 yr old girl biggrin

*

What they and/or Janet and whomever else did with her image - changing it to that "I'm a tough chick and I'll show the boys how it's done" was brilliant for the time. I think it literally started a movement - Madonna got "buff" and tougher too.

*

I think Prince still deserves some credit though - Nasty Girl became Nasty Boys, and there is an element of Prince's Controversy in her song What Have You Done For Me Lately. When Prince sang the title lyric in the middle of Controversy it seemed to fit right in there biggrin

Oh, and was just looking back at the Control tracks, and I never realized that Monte Moir wrote The Pleasure Principle! Pretty cool smile

Completely agree. Most of these armchair warriors have never been to Paisley Park or even made the effort to go & see P perform when he was still here. I’ve met loads of these so called fans who have alot to say!
If Jessie has or had issues with P it’s his business. I’m sure he had his reasons. We all know P wasn’t perfect & Jessie’s issues are probably well deserved. They were once friends, colleagues & peers who probably conversed & hung out a thousand times. Who are they or we to judge Jessie? His response seems heartfelt & genuine. No doubt he’ll always wonder what P’s gift was. It was probably a guitar that Jessie once admired. I for one am looking forward to seeing Jessie & his band perform at PP hopefully elsewhere also. I love his music. 💜

Right, he was there very early on with Prince, Morris and gang. I love his story (with Questlove, I think) of when he first saw Prince play with his band. He said Morris took him to see the show, and afteward he met Prince, and said something like, "I see by your playing that you are also a fan of Jimi Hendrix." Prince's response was, "I've never watched him play". Jesse said he started laughing and saying, "that's total bullshit!" to him, or something similar, while Morris is in the backround trying to signal to him to stop talking about it. Too funny!!

*

Jesse goes way back to the early days - before fame, money and competition really took control of everyone's behavior. Money always changes the dynamic, unfortunately.

*

I agree with some of the "over the top" fan behavior too. You've got guys doing YT channels about Prince who didn't know his music or who he was until 1990 or later. I'm like, dude, you missed TEN years....ten REALLY good years!!! Some of them are very good though - such as The Violet Reality. They're younger, but they know their stuff, and they've got good information. I would just be very bummed if, like another guy doing a Prince YT channel, my first exposure to Prince was Grafitti Bridge razz biggrin

You ever notice that when they show photos of their collections they consist of brand new shiny books & framed pictures, purple bric-a-brac & a dozen or two shiny new cds etc? Lmao not a 12", promo vinyl, ticket stub, autograph, Uptown/Controversy, rarity, official vhs/dvd, associates vinyl/PP release in sight lmao.
Lol these are the ones who love banging on about supporting/unsupporting the estate & "respect the legacy!", & interrogating you on what you are doing to keep the legacy alive?! & have you read the files?!

P & Jesse are probably more alike than people suspect, both being artists, musicians & Geminis lol.

When it comes to the mpls sound, outside of P, Jesse & The Time are in my top 5, & they are number 1. Very talented individuals.

Enjoy the Jesse performance at PP headbang

It's like how Jesse said Sheila gets on his nerves or whatever, that's communication. lol That's how families talk sometimes. Through others. She probably would have heard about it if it had not leaked. I think that kind of thing went on with P & J too. All of them.

And Jesse just has to realize we're never going to forget him or let him go. umbrella

Personally I would like this thread to be closed.

No antagonism and bad vibes intended. I'm not posting to belittle anyone, engage in powerplays or offend, so please bear that in mind when reading.

There seems to be some sort of mini-agenda against Jesse expanding, and for the more easily swayed, this thread seems to be (in part) promoting that.

This anti-Jesse sentiment, from a small but quite vocal movement, are basing their feelings on a clandestine, doctored recording of an uncontextualised private conversation coupled with 3rd party gossip, and that doesn't seem a healthy way to conduct anything.

As a fandom, let's move on, stop stirring and be thankful for the amazing music that Prince has left us. And be nice to each other, and that includes Jesse Johnson, he did some awesome tunes too.

Also as a side note, peeps are saying that Jesse and Prince didn't talk for 30 years.

Prince died in 2016. That would make the last time they spoke, 1986.

Forgive me, maths is not my strong point, but wasn't Graffitti Bridge shot in 1989 & 1990 along with re-recording of some of Pandemonium at a similar time. Surely Jesse and Prince spoke then? Because that would be 27 / 26 years....

Does anyone know who is actually behind the ridiculous "Prince Defenders" group?? * I would bet none of them personally knew Prince.

We don't know that... 1 of them had to have known Jesse in order to have a convo and get a recording of him.
