I never understood that even way back then when this interview came out. Jesse thought he should have been the frontman star? Unless that Morris would be a solo act and Jesse would be leader of The Time? As the guitarist and the singer? I think the way The Time was presented was the best decision (duh).

[Edited 2/20/19 10:47am]

Yes, Jesse wanted to front the Time, maybe being a guitarist he felt he should have been the frontman... like Prince.

And after her had that night where he semi did in 1984, Prince wasn't into the idea and that is when Jesse left the camp

I hope Jesse and Morris finaly understood that The Time was the perfect storm. Im kind of embarrassed that I didn't get what was meant in that part of the interview till now lol. It all makes sense now why it fell apart. But did they each think they'd have the success individually as they did as The Time?

Johnson: Yeah, “Screwdriver.” He has a big-assed orchestra now; he’s got bands with guys, he’s got all-girl bands. He was just here; he just played a few days here. But that’s how he is. Prince has not treated our version of the band with any respect since ’06, since he did the Super Bowl. He’s had a hair up his ass about these other bands who have been around him for over 30 years, I might add. And I just don’t understand why. On the other hand, my other people—I was in the Original 7ven with Terry and Jimmy and Jessie Johnson—and they always do this. Anytime a crisis comes, they run off, because they’re rich. They run off, and you don’t hear from them no more. And Jessie Johnson bailed on another project too. So you know I’m just tired of babysitting and bowing down to cats that I grew up with. Because I got talent too. So..

Johnson: Well you know, here’s the thing: that’s the myth everyone thinks. I’m so well-to-do because I grew up around them and have been in bands with rich guys,” but it didn’t translate it out to me because there’s been a lot of selfish bullshit that went on in my career over the years. So that’s where we’re at today. I hate my rich friends: I’m not going to lie, they get on my damn nerves. But at the same time, I’m attached to them for the rest of my life. It’s like HIV: they’re going to always be attached to me, so I just accept it and move on. It’s kind of a bitter pill sometimes that I’m struggling like this and I probably shouldn’t be. But I am, so I have to get through it the best I can.

Jellybean Johnson: The Original 7ven, I doubt if you’ll ever see it again. I hate to sit here and admit that: I doubt if you’ll ever see it again in light of Terry and Jimmy’s bullshit and Jesse’s bullshit.

Johnson: The only original members in Morris Day and the Time are me, Morris and Monte. Jerome left in like ’05 or ’06 or something like that and got with his brother. You know, Terry Lewis is his brother. And he decided he didn’t want to be in it anymore so he was back in the Original 7ven. But now him and Morris fell out in the Morris Day and the Time version because of money. He wanted more money and he was making more money than any of us except Morris and that wasn’t enough for him. So Morris got him a guy he could pay $300 a show and was happy with it. So that’s been the case for the last five or six years.

Jesse Johnson 2014

THE REASON I LEFT THE TIME/O7

"PANDEMONIUM"
I wrote and recorded the music for the following compositions at my personal studio in Minneapolis named Jungle Love Studio:
"Blondie" & "The Skillet"
(Neither song carried those titles but were later named those by FT)
I would never pen a lyric like Blondie, because even at that time, I found it very derogatory and demeaning. But of course being the only one that felt that way, I'm always within that band labeled difficult.

THE O7ven
Once again music recorded at my private spot, but later lyrics and titles I didn't agree with and YES, I passionately made my feelings known.

AYDKMK- Couldn't relate at this stage of the game.

SICK
Still don't quite know what the h*** that means! cause if it feels that good to me! I'm sure not going to be thinking of something so beautiful as $hit!

LIFE STYLE
I've never been rich enough for anyone to want me for $ sorry! There have been a few times in my life that I've almost been with physically beautiful women cause she had looks + $, but they we're mean and so forth that I ran like they were on fire. Why? I believe wholeheartedly in Karma! You get what you take, sometimes it's better to receive.

ROLEPLAY
I honestly don't remember what that was about...I don't...

The moment you have a daughter/son/children and you are endowed with decent amount of common sense, it should really bring into focus how you view women, man, yourself, and the world!

Love Y'all,
Jesse 🎸

I think Morris Day did, I think the other guys did, that is why I think they were will to ride out the lack of pay and ill treatment. I mean Morris and Prince ended up fist fighting at one point. But if Prince didn't fire JJ & Terry, there would not have been that 1984 drama. Which I still don't understand why Prince would attempt to mess with the 'perfect storm' on the cusp on the Purple Rain momentum. I still don't understand that move by Prince. And it had a chain reaction. It definitely was a mind fuck by Prince, because didn't he tell Jellybean to tell Jimmy that he could come back but that Terry could not? I'm trying to get the piece together but from memory, Prince had Jesse in his back pocket while being in the Time. Like Jesse would tell Prince things the Time members had secret.

.

I think Prince had Jesse souped up, especially for the period he lived with him. Maybe Jesse got the idea that he was bigger than the guys. Being a part of that purple camp is what made it so huge and addictive. For Prince as well. That foundation of 1980-1987 specifically, if Prince didn't have that I wonder what his career would look like. Jesse was making 'bigger' moves than Morris Day I believe, but Jesse as well stayed a bit stuck in a place that only could have happened in the 80s. Even Prince struggle musically after the 80s and the changing music scene.

On 8th June 1984, THE TIME, led by [Jesse Johnson], performed Jungle love live on the 3rd annual Minnesota Black Music Awards at the Prom Center in St. Paul. [Morris Day] wasn't present at this event and his conspicuous absence sparked rumors, that THE TIME had broken up.

In late June 1984 [Morris Day] was definitely no longer interested to continuing his work with THE TIME, has moved to Santa Monica in Los Angeles (CA) and severed ties with [Prince]'s camp and his management team. After failed attempts to convince [Morris Day] to return to Minneapolis, all come to the conclusion, that THE TIME was history.

This piece from Prince in 1985 says a lot of how he viewed the individuals and where he thought they are best suited. I think this friction has continued with Jesse and the Time until recently

.

.

Why did Morris say such negative things about you after he left the band?

People who leave usually do so out of a need to express something they can't do here. It's really that simple. Morris, for example, always wanted to be a solo act, period. But when you're broke and selling shoes someplace, you don't think about asking such a thing. Now, I think Morris is trying to create his own identity. One of the ways of doing that is trying to pretend that you don't have a past.

.

Jesse [Johnson, former guitarist for the Time] is the only one who went away who told what happened, what really went down with the band. He said there was friction, because he was in a situation that didn't quite suit him. Jesse wanted to be in front all the time. And I just don't think God puts everybody in that particular bag. And sometimes I was blunt enough to say that to people: "I don't think you should be in the frontman. I think Morris should."

Agreed.

Welcome to "the org", Mumio…they can have you, but I'll have your love in the end nod

Prince was so fucked up with power and control in his life due to his mom and pops emotional abuse that anything less than ultimate loyalty to the kin..the Prince, is off with their heads response. He no doubt didnt want Terry back because Terry was 'mouthy' with it and was not intimidated by Prince from what Ive read in the past. Just like Alexander Oneal. I remember seeing Jesse perform an intimate show in 2014, in the beautiful beach city Santa Monica,Ca, at a small club called Harvelle. He had the audience in the palm of his hand.

Interesting how those who know little to nothing on certain individuals, &/or subjects, are the most verbal & judgemental.

This album face solidified Morris Day forever as the face of the Time

For some reason Prince underestimated the bond these guys had and their belief in his vision of them as a united. Prince removes Jimmy and Terry were were very integral to the shows, Jellybean leaves(and returns) Monte leaves when he realizes Morris is leaving etc chain reaction.

I noticed something in the movie. Al Magnolia always centered Morris Jesse Jellybean & Jerome in shots in Purple Rain, and the others were like on the 'outskirts'

can you imagine what would have happened if,in retaliation for Jimmy and Terry being fired,Morris had left the band in 1983? eek That would have been a disaster for Prince. As someone pointed out,Morris is irreplaceable. No one else could have pulled off that persona. The movie would not have been the same without Morris.

Morris was irreplaceable. No other frontman would have worked following Morris. He was the David Lee Roth of rnb bands at the time.

This album face solidified Morris Day forever as the face of the Time

For some reason Prince underestimated the bond these guys had and their belief in his vision of them as a unit. Prince removes Jimmy and Terry who were very integral to the shows, Jellybean leaves(and returns) Monte leaves when he realizes Morris is leaving etc chain reaction.

I noticed something in the movie. Al Magnolia always centered Morris Jesse Jellybean & Jerome in shots in Purple Rain, and the others were like on the 'outskirts'

I remember reading that the band didnt feel the same when Jam n Lewis were gone. Understandable.

Yes, the newer members of The Time (Paul Peterson and who was the other guy??) were hardly seen in the PR film. Magnoli was clearly trying to focus on the original members.

When I die I hope people don't quote things I said in my twenties/30+ yrs ago as a representation of what I thought/knew at 50+

The solution is (if you’re a celebrity),don’t do interviews or at the very least,be careful what you say. Those old interviews don’t just disappear many years later, lol.

can you imagine what would have happened if,in retaliation for Jimmy and Terry being fired,Morris had left the band in 1983? eek That would have been a disaster for Prince. As someone pointed out,Morris is irreplaceable. No one else could have pulled off that persona. The movie would not have been the same without Morris.

I bet he wanted to but was probably under contract.

wow, it would have fallen apart. Prince's trajectory would have been so different.

Remember this too. Jesse speaking on why he was at odds with some of the lyrics/content. Especially at that age.
Jesse has a childhood history that includes The Nation of Islam & Malcom X etc etc, he has always incorporated conscious lyrics etc. There is also Moorish American themes on his album Verbal Penetration.

That actually explains a lot.

His social media content has always been interesting (to me at least) & markedly different from the other Time members pages, if not all the mpls sound act's pages.

Actually. I was referring to Prince, & the ongoing references to things he said in the 80s etc.. I said "when I Die...".

They absolutely will. No doubt about it. They will recite all the shit you said and did when you were 10 too.

No doubt, reminiscing, telling stories etc. Natural.
My people though are hopefully aware enough not to take my quotes from the 80s etc & Use them to represent my mindset at 50+.
That was my point, using 3+ decades old quotes to Represent people at 50+.
Especially re people like P, who actively throughout life studied/aimed to raise their consciousness/knowledge.
