Yeah,I noticed this back in 1985 when he released his first album. In interviews,he would say bold things like "My first album killed what Prince's first album did",forgetting that he was already well-known (from his years as The Time's guitarist) when his album came out.He constantly made it seem like a contest.I also recall him criticizing some of Prince's ideas."He made us play behind a curtain for Vanity 6",he said."Later we heard people saying, "The girls weren't much, but did you hear that band?".Just seems like he always had conflicts/disagreements with Prince shrug and sadly,he still seems to have that chip on his shoulder...carrying around all that anger. It's not healthy to do that.

It's a good thing that he didn't tell Prince about this biggrin back in those days,Prince didn't want his proteges working outside the camp.

Jesse actually did it for free. So Prince wouldn't find out about it. giggle

Throwing out an idea about what may have happened. On the "defenders" Twitter page they indicated that the recording took place "mid 2018" and that they (whoever they are) were not responsible for the recording. There was a Questlove Supreme interview with Jesse that was recorded in May 2018. Ingrid Chavez posted a picture from the recording on her Instagram account in May 2018. The audio was streamed on Questlove Supreme in August 2018. Did parts of the conversation (unaired sections) fall into the wrong hands? I do have screenshots from the defenders, Questlove and Ingrid but cannot figure out how to attach them. Of course this is pure speculation on my part.

Jesse was also the first twin city producer to work with the beautiful, talented Janet Jackson.

that's right and that shits flopped all over the twin cities and everywhere else.

All that matters is it was a start .It lead Janet to her destiny of working with the talented & gifted Jimmy Jam(whom I met) & Terry Lewis. Now SHE'S BEING INDUCTED INTO THE R&RHOF.

People have to get over the fact that people lead their own lives and see the world from their view, with their own eyes and footsteps. It’s all good. It’s great to see how people exposed to something have their own vantage point.

U rarely see a guitar god on a Old School Funk tour. Which is why he hasn't done them. Jesse is more of a club gig artist performing on his own bill.

Professionally, Jesse Johnson is doing really well. He's right in there with D'Angelo and just last year he was featured on Chromeo's latest album. He's also recorded at least one other track with them that's likely to come out this year.

Yes, but this (the bolded comment) was true - at least the good music playing behind the curtain part. Also, keep in mind, the crowd was there to see and here music being played - not for a female dancing/singing act in lingerie, which let's face it, was what Vanity 6 was about. The reviews about them were not the most positive back then.

The song is called Must've Been. He's not listed as a featured artist on the track but he is listed in the liner notes as "guitars by". Which is understandable, seeing as he only plays guitar on the song. He also performed it live with Chromeo on The Tonight Show.

I love this old article from 1983 - all of the funny statements by the associates to try to hide Prince's involvement. I think it's quite telling though how Prince recognized Jesse's talent by the fact that he was the only player not from the original MN scene who he placed in The Time ....

Morris didn't exactly put the group together -- all but guitarist Jesse Johnson had been playing around Minneapolis in a band called Flyte Tyme (known familiarly as the Tyme even then). But it is Morris who has led the band to the point where it now often steals the show from the scantily clad Vanity 6 and even from Prince. Morris, the former drummer, has stayed closer to traditional R&B but, by injecting his good humor, has developed one of the best live acts in the country.

Regading the "Defenders" post about Prince never texting - I'm pretty sure Bobby Z has stated that he texted Prince after the Moline incident to see if he was okay. He stated Prince texted him back stating he was fine and inviting him to the upcoming PP party. Bobby stated he wrote back that he couldn't make it but he was glad he was doing okay. Their exchange was either via email or text.

Janet was exploring her inner artistry that her father Papa Joe saw in her & apparently Jesse also. I worked with her just before she started her successful music career. She SLAYED all the vocals on the Jesse produced track. Jesse should have produced Janet's whole second album.

The track he produced for Denise "Vanity" Matthew's "Undress Me" lead vocals was the best she EVER sounded. It rivaled even Prince's "Nasty Girl". The intoxicating beat I still play this very day.

Why did Morris say such negative things about you after he left the band?

People who leave usually do so out of a need to express something they can't do here. It's really that simple. Morris, for example, always wanted to be a solo act, period. But when you're broke and selling shoes someplace, you don't think about asking such a thing. Now, I think Morris is trying to create his own identity. One of the ways of doing that is trying to pretend that you don't have a past.

Jesse [Johnson, former guitarist for the Time] is the only one who went away who told what happened, what really went down with the band. He said there was friction, because he was in a situation that didn't quite suit him. Jesse wanted to be in front all the time. And I just don't think God puts everybody in that particular bag. I never understood that even way back then when this interview came out. Jesse thought he should have been the frontman star? Yes, Jesse wanted to front the Time, maybe being a guitarist he felt he should have been the frontman... like Prince.

And after her had that night where he semi did in 1984, Prince wasn't into the idea and that is when Jesse left the camp
