I don't care if I find out who recorded him, it doesn't matter. He'd spoken his feelings about Prince before and he is entitled to them. I am not going to the Celebration this year, but I do have a problem with him being there after what he said about the event itself. Was it really sour grapes because he hadn't been invited previously? That was really all that ticked me off because if you aren't going to "celebrate" everything Prince then why are you there (rhetorical question by the way)?

I agree with you on the Celebration, totally.

I can't believe this thread is still steaming on... and Jesse is still playing the Celebration... and people are going regardless of those exorbitant prices.

I dont remember which magazine it was, whether it was a black teen/music mag or Rolling Stone something from overseas like Kerrang - but the headline on the cover said it all (which makes me think it was a rock mag) :

PRINCE IS AN ASSHOLE - interview with Jesse Johnson

I think its always been know how he felt

The audio was under five minutes long.
It was a private conversation. Someone recorded him & leaked it, smdh.
Most of the audio was bad, & was very hard to hear what was said clearly.
It was edited & chopped a few times..., incl at the start, so as to sound worse than it was.

I did NOT hear him say Sheila was a bad drummer, & I played it at least 10 times, I heard him say she bothers him, many fans have issues with her moves post '16 btw.
Something was said about Bobby's drumming skills I think, I could only hear the last part of the bit about Bobby.
Let me remind you many associates & fans have made comments re Bobby's skills over many yrs.
He did not say he has no love for Prince.
He is not a fam, he is a peer, colleague & friend of Prince's. They lived together at one point. In so many words he was saying he doesn't look at P like the fams do. Naturally.

What he said re not being given credit for compositions/playing is not new, we have heard about this since the 80s, from Jesse & others.
To isolate 4/5 minutes out of context is manipulative.
As is to secretly record a private conversation.

Jesse has not ever used P, he has his own career, Jesse has not exploited his death for profit, lied, auctioned P's belongings, sold P related merch, told personal stories he woulda never told when P was here, or caused permanent damage to his name, etc etc etc, like some others I could mention who y'all Stan for.
And I sure as hell never saw a petition to stop those individuals from attending the celebration.
Smmfh.

Thanks for some clarification...

ya, he was always talking shit back in those days but he was never really more than a minor r&b act, never. He used to say that he didn't rip up autographs in girls faces and make them cry like prince did, that prince fell apart without the time but you know what? In Poplife, i read that his own band went on camera singing "money, that's what i want" because he wasn't paying them right. So, it looks like he was just really trying to be prince in more ways than one. I asked Cardenas about that, he didn't answer directly, he said something like "alot of people tried to do things like Prince".

Throwing out an idea about what may have happened. On the "defenders" Twitter page they indicated that the recording took place "mid 2018" and that they (whoever they are) were not responsible for the recording. There was a Questlove Supreme interview with Jesse that was recorded in May 2018. Ingrid Chavez posted a picture from the recording on her Instagram account in May 2018. The audio was streamed on Questlove Supreme in August 2018. Did parts of the conversation (unaired sections) fall into the wrong hands? I do have screenshots from the defenders, Questlove and Ingrid but cannot figure out how to attach them. Of course this is pure speculation on my part.

That would actually make sense. I listened to that interview - it was great. Jesse gave lots of information on the backstory.

1, you are very uninformed, not to mention incredibly niave, if you think he's the only one.

2, you missed the point. Again.

3, best you & I ignore each other from now on.

Because you know it will be healing for some fans, and people are hungry to see it.

Because they're performing your music there too, with or without you.

Because you might not celebrate "everything" about Prince, but a piece of you feels like you might regret not doing it, might need to celebrate more than you even realize, and might take it as a celebration of more than just Prince.

Because you already skipped out of The Time reunion and you aren't sure you made the right choice.

Because it's an opportunity to see old family and you realize you missed some of those and might not get others.

Because musicians play. They work it out through music.

Because it's a high profile gig in your hometown and you know every time you play there, people treat it like it's the same celebration.

Because a lot of reasons that are likely personal and layered or just private that we aren't privvy to.

Refreshing. Common sense ain't too common in the purple cult.
Grey areas, subtleties & the realities of the human condition are rarely incorporated when simplistic, duality laden reasoning is in full effect.

I didn't see a boycott/petition for those invited to the celebration that have exploited his death for profit, attention, revenge &/or pity, auctioned his belongings, sold purple related merch etc, looked all kinds of funky in the files, lied, told personal stories they would of never told when he was here, in some cases permanent, very damaging stories, that the only witness involved was dead.

I'm sorry, but maybe it wasn't clear. I meant that I would have the same reaction to anyone else. But let me be clear about this too: I have not ever gotten involved with any petitions for anything and don't plan to. You've made some valid points in your comments, many I agree with, but I'm pretty clear when I do speak about any of it. I'm in it for Prince, no one else.

He didn't get caught, as much as he was unknowinglly recorded, which again, is illegal.

But really, this situation has only helped his exposure. Any press, including negative press, is usually a "win" in our culture these days. smile

You are entitled to your opinion but it won't change mine. He's always said this type of thing so nothing new really. I've said before that he can say whatever he wants to say about his own experiences with Prince, but if he despises him so much he doesn't belong at an event people are attending that celebrates the life of Prince. He even said himself he'd never attend the celebration, clear as a bell in that recording. I stand by what I said smile
