Oh for crying out loud, do I need to explain yet again the history? Vavoom was given to local radio station. Only circulating version was crummy FM rip. The infamous T got a CDR copy of the promo given to the radio station. People didn't believe him, so he posted an MP3 of that pristine promo except he put porn noises all over it to prevent bootleggers to profit from it. (Meanwhile he could use the pristine version to trade for other material from elite collectors.) The later official release of Vavoom is different from the original as played on the radio, includign some lyric changes and some changes WRT the music.

yeahthat

.

T, for all his greatness, really fucked-up on that one: yet another example of a fanmade version that people believe to be the real deal, and you end-up reading comments about Prince "cleaning up the original version" neutral neutral neutral

Did T ever post on the Org? I knew him back on AMP but I don't remember him as an Orger.

If so, then unless someone was active in the Prince community as far back as the 90's, they wouldn't have any idea who T was or what he did.

Dandroppedadime has only been an Orger since 2010 so it's very likely he would never know that his "rough" version was made by a fan. Therefore, I call shennanigans on Bart's crying out loud over this.

Of course a new fan wouldn't know. This is why fanmade versions are not to be shared on the internet. It's not the first time a fanmade thing is assumed by an orger to be genuine...

I wasn't aware of that history either (I've probably never searched the org for VaVoom tbh) and the part about it being sent to radio stations isn't on princevault either unfortunately, hopefully someone will update it. Which version is the one on the NPG music club so?

I've never heard the Vavoom story before but I remember one or two people getting excited about the track at the time. I've always really liked it myself but never actually misplaced any shit because of it.

I remember the overall reaction was very positive.

When I got to hear it in all its mediocrity I was left wondering if others had heard a different version.

And I thought u weren't supposed to share ur 12" in public.

Anybody PM me with the OG? I'm a fan of the song but couldn't get it when I was in High School. It's just a kind of "throwaway" (for Prince) rock jam out.... like PEACH or CREAM...

The one that really bored me was GUITAR... until I heard him play it live.... Difference between night and day.

I don't know what an OG is, and I don't know how to PM anyway.

IMHO, Prince never recorded a "throwaway" song in his life. This is my opinion, anyway. After listening to every single Prince song through headphones, and hearing just all kinds of instruments and production touches on every one of them (man, did he love to pan!), I'm convinced that Prince never went through the motions. He might not have concentrated 100% when writing every single song but when he stepped into the studio, he gave it everything he had. Every single time, IMO.

I loved every single version of "Guitar" I've ever heard, starting with the original funk/pop version. When I heard the bass line on the rock version, I lost my s*** as it were. And like you, I love it even more live. Have you seen the Portugal 2010 concert? It pops up on YouTube all the time. If it's not there now, it will be before long. Go to 23:12 and invest five minutes. If you aren't delirious with joy I will personally come clean your home. Especially after the last two minutes!

Yes. I did not mean to imply that he was throwing it away. I meant that compared to much of his work, it wasn't showcasing the depth of his expression or the meandering of his thoughts much, it was a fun little "ditty" as they call em.

Even on mistguided stuff... (which are hard to come by) like "Purple and Gold" there was something intended.

As for P&G... I used to wonder if it were a joke. But, sadly I think not.

OG stood for "Original" even though I've read prev comment stating that the one orgers most associated with the release was a mash up intended to foil bootlegging.

Seems that I've lost quite a few of those tracks to a dead hard drive. That'll learn me to back up the back ups.

Everybody's got their favorites....i don't like much of Crystal Ball...but ppl here tend to enjoy it. To each their own. Prince was a menace onstage... I miss that so much. :*(

I'm sorry you lost tracks! I'm not that big of a fan of "Crystal Ball" either but like with every other Prince release, there's still a few songs I can't do without.

"Purple and Gold" was just about the only time I ever saw Prince swing and miss but hey - there are probably a bunch of Minnesota Vikings fans who still love it!

Regarding how many official versions there are:

I listed 3 versions on my discography site: the radio broadcast, the NPGMC cut and the Slaughterhouse cut. I'm not sure why I did that because I'm not certain whether the radio and NPGMC versions are different, but I assume if I did so I must have checked (I don't put things up there without making sure the data is correct). I may also have made a mistake though, it's happened before.

I'll compare the radio and NPGMC version ASAP and if I realize they're absolutely similar, I'll delete the redundant entry. I may not have time to do it immediately though so please y'all give me some time.

No, Vavoom was first given to one local Minneapolis radio station. That's the origin of the radio rip, which is different than the version later released via NPGMC.

Ha! So that's where my info comes from, I took your word for it until further verification, which I knew I'd have to do eventually because I had a sticker in my outtakes folder to download the NPGMC version, that I had somehow lost along the way.

I've finally doanloaded the NPGMC version today and I've just compared: they're different from the very beginning, with a different intro. So we definitely do have 3 versions nod

Again IDK where my info comes from but if it's there it's that I got it from some source I deemed reliable, but the site says 8th of June. In case you come-up with further evidence that it was 7th, please let me know.

I'll contact Pvault about this in due time.

Soooooooo...no one with numbers in their name "lost their poop" to Vavoom? If find this list to be highly bias and discriminatory. That being said, "When Eye Lay My Hands on U," "Underneath the Cream," "Sex Me, Sex Me Not," and a few others still get me going!!!

Lotta Dicks on that list. That's a real ball-scratcher....I mean, a real head-scratcher.

I've told this story several times, including as long ago as AUGUST 2017: http://prince.org/msg/7/445501 .

Dang, I guess Dandroppedadime doesn't read every single post you make. What the #$%^ is wrong with him?!?

BTW, fix your link. You didn't quite hyperlink all the digits and your link as it sits takes us to a thread discussing why men don't marry.

I try to be more civil that Bart because I know it's usually not people's fault that they don't know something, but it's true that having to debunk the same misconceptions and hoaxes over and over again is irritating after some time.

I can't blame those people who don't know, but some people also make shit up, or purposedly repeat lies.

That's the thing - Bart doesn't have to debunk anything. But he always jumps in whenever he sees something incorrect, and then bitches about having to jump in. He makes the choice to get his panties in a wad.

Bart is not a mod nor is he the founder of this website. He is under no obligation to play Correction Officer Van Hemelen. No one asked him to do what he does, so if he gets exasperated or contracts the vapors correcting someone else's mistake, that's on him alone.

There are only two people here on the Org that I can think of who seem to get joy out of making other people feel bad or inferior. I am glad that everyone else is like you - nice, civil and understanding that not everyone has been a fan since 1976.
