Anyone who claims any Prince song is worse than Purple & Gold deserves to be locked in a dark room with no distraction whatsoever, and forced to listen to Purple & Gold on a 24/7 loop for a whole month. It's time for some serious purple spanking if you ask me A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

Purple and gold is the first song that "got me" after prince died ... like choked up n shit ... it was a few months after the alleged death .. i was giving every single song album outtake one more chance and of course i had dismissed purple and gold like everyone else as not very good ... but i had only ever heard the super shitty recording when it was first leaked ... this time with a fresh download of maybe blast or some other comp, i could hear it all nice and crisp .. It just struck me because this song is clealy an expression of prince minneapolis pride ... i could hear prince thinking back to his youth when he would watch viking games or whatnot in the lyrics ... gone was all the shallow bravado that muddled MANY far worse songs he has recorded ... it just felt like an expression of love for his hometown community ... and all that made me think of prince as an innocent kid who went through some tough shit ... gone was rockstar prince .. here was shy romantic innocent prince .. and it made me sad that THAT guy .. was gone

Funny how some people who spent years shitting on Prince day in day out when he was alive are now praising him, going as far as to justify the existence of his worst piece of music ever. People are to be loved when they're among us. It's of little use to them once they're gone, particularly if it comes from people who were continuously trying to hurt them in their lifetime. Not a favorite of mine, but I'd still put it above "Mellow". Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

Right now it's Sexy MF. Whenever Tony M starts talking about "Sexy MF shaking that ass, shaking that ass, shaking that ass", I start laughing uncontrollably and start shaking my head in disbelief

I hear you about Tony M but that groove it tight! The horns just kill it, and it is one where his " rap " voice really works for me! I requested it in a nightclub recently and it literally blew the roof off.

I agree 100%. It's James Brown for 1992 but Tony M really makes you say "yeah, it's definetely 1992"

Not a single vote for Sarah? I've never written a song, but I could write 10 songs as sophisticated as that by lunchtime. And it's already 11.30. Were any credits ever released for Purple & Gold? It sounds a lot like the things CJ Vanston put together for Waiting For Guffman, and I know he also collaborated with Prince through the years.

I don't see p&g as his worst song cos of what it was intended for. I find tangerine really annoying.

Several people said P&G fulfilled its purpose as a sports anthem. Now lemme ask you that: does a sports anthem need to sound like something sang by a bunch of drunk sailors in a britton bar in the 19th century? I'm not a sports person because sports too often celebrate a gross and vulgar view of manhood, but I believe in the 21st century a sports anthem can be sexy. I mean even Sheila bashed Prince about that song, releasing her own, super funky linn drum instrumental as an answer to it. Prince could have come-up with something a little sexier. Lemon Crush is inoffensive. A bit bland. Screwdriver on the other hand. That just hurts on so many levels.

If you put yourself in the mindset of early 80s Controversy / Vanity 6 album tracks, then play it back to back with "No More Candy 4 U", it's kinda fun.

. . Tambourine is one of the greatest Prince songs, IMO. I think that because: . 1. Sounded like nothing else 2. Produced, Arranged, Composed, Performed by Prince - always high on my list 3. Contains sound elements that made it uniquely Prince 4. Kind of dirty 5. Thought provoking 6. The opposite of When Doves Cry in that WDC had everything but a baseline, Tambourine had only a baseline
