I'm kidding i fucking love that song, both the album version and a little more the unreleased one.

Man you fooled me.

Not to mention the stellar, legendary jams : the 1984 Birthday Show,
and the 1985 Miami soundcheck.

"Worst song", what an old, lame thread.
I'm outta here.

Whilst I think P&G is shit, at least he didnt put it on an album. I can almost see what he was trying to achieve with that song - create a song for the fans to bellow out during a game. A bit like "Youre shit, and you know you are" which often reverberates from the crowd at an English football match. P&G is indeed shit, and it knows it is.

But for a really shit, non album song, I would have to say the worst is Fallinlove2nite. That is nails on a chalk board right there.

The real awful songs though are the ones he deemed good enough for an album. Jughead and Live4Love (on the same album!) are really shit. Breakfast can wait? Fuck that shit. Arms of Orion, another poop on the doorstep of art. Grafitti Bridge... oh dear. And several from Emmanicipation... The Sun, Moon and Stars - The Sun, Moon and my arse more like. And what is with that song Purple Rain?

.... Ok, just kidding on the last one.

Like "Call The Law", starts kinda lame, but then it grows.
It has great ideas. Not the "worst" by far.
Check the nineties outtakes...
Some very bad wannabe hip-hop in there...

Naaah, like "The Arms Of Orion", that's not sappy, that's genius sappy.
You'll find yourself singing along the final "ah-ah-ahhhh"s one of these days.

Lyrically, we're a step down from the Lovesexy days:
"Graffiti Bridge"'s spirituality doesn't leave much room to interpretation.
Its duality is too obvious — the Kid is a weirdo who slaps his girl and thinks briefly about hanging himself, that's what make Purple Rain so compelling — whereas Spooky Electric, Glam Slam, Anna Stesia, Prince doing MJ reciting the alphabet, race cars driving upon one's pants, 7 and 11, 2 and 4, all of it is cryptic enough to embark you on a real journey.
Like a book, images and visions come to you.

Have some superdiva à la Whitney sing "Graffiti Bridge" with totally new lyrics, produce it with the latest audio trends, and you have an incredible #1 melody, GB's melody kicks ass.
It's a broadway finale. Maybe GB would have been better on Broadway, live.
But it takes itself a tad too seriously, and give absurd and laughable results,
Prince on "Tick Tick Bang" is really Prince high on himself,
which is interesting to watch, for the will he puts into it.
GB is too crypto-gay for me: the leather, the Dirty Mind revisited-by-capitalism-stardom look, Aura played by the worst actor ever put on screen, it's not helping.
It's a depressing album: "Dear Dad, the post-stardom days are a tough thing to go through, I think I'm going' nuts" is maybe the bleakiest album intro ever by P.

GB is badly produced: wash away the Hall Reverb drowning "Still Would Stand All Time", it sounds like a giant bathroom. Put back on, the original, gritty, über-dirty, distorted version of "Joy In Repetition", the one with the Linn delayed toms intro — as it is, with the slight tape hiss.
The needle has to go in the red towards the end, the same trick some don't get in the finale of "The Breakdown", they don't get distorsion, even digital (less pleasant to the ear) can serve an intention.

This JIR version sends all guitarists to Kingdom Come, when the two guitars blend together it's par with the "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man" slow bridge, it's music at its finest, with Prince going all Wally-like over it: "Why don't U love me?"

In general, any song reproduceable on a single instrument while keeping its interest, whatever the arrangement, means it's a fine composition.
Whether thou likest it or not is an entirely different matter.

I distinctly remember listening to The Gold Experience for the first time, loving the album, then getting to Dolphin and thinking 'what the hell is this sh*t?' I think it was the lyrics more than the melody.

There's a few songs I skip on the latter albums so won't list them all here. Everyday Is A Winding Road was utter dog-toffee.

Looking back at some of the early 90s stuff, there's a few tracks with 'rapping' on that I can't listen to these days ... Jughead and Push from Diamonds and Pearls both come to mind.

I think its safe to say that "Purple & Gold" is the worst Prince song ever.Out of hundreds of his songs I've heard,I think there are maybe 5 songs that I didn't like. That shows how much I love his music .What were your thoughts when you first heard "Purple & Gold"? Did u think Prince had lost his touch? I've heard some say that Prince made this song as a joke but I'm not sure.

I really like Graffiti Bridge, however I do understand why others find it kinda cheesy.

My vote would go to Be My Mirror.

If only considering released songs I would pick There is lonely.
