Question:

.

Is the estate reporting about their work every now and then?

Are they required to do so?

--- Bremmer has to go to the court and report on what they are doing at the court hearings. You can see all of this on the Carver county court house website.

The Administrator of the Estate will be required to file an annual Accounting with The Court.

(This is for informational purposes only.)

RIP Prince. We will NEVER forget you. Thank you so much.

You can keep up with the events of Prince's Estate by:
1) googling "Prince" in daily news - you should be able to sort through the results that pop up fairly quickly;
2) check here, at the Org - Prince's fams run to their computers quickly when a new tidbit becomes known; and/or
3) check The Court's daily filings <this is probably THE best thing to do. Here is the shortcut link for you: http://www.mncourts.gov/I...elson.aspx <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
That is> wwwDotmncourtsDotgov/InReTheEstateofPrinceRogersNelsonDotaspx
This link will take you DIRECTLY to Prince's Estate filings and you can read them on a daily basis. Usually the day's filings are posted the following day by 4pm. Some days there isn't anything to read; some days there is a little; and some days, there is a LOT to read!

An investment property owned by the late singer-songwriter Prince is currently for sale in Chanhassen, Minn., at $335,000.

The renovated ranch-style house came to market in January, roughly three months prior to the artist’s death. Carver County records show that the property owner is Prince R. Nelson, the legal name of Prince, with tax records going to the address of Paisley Park Studios.

Set on about a quarter of an acre, the single-story home has an open-plan living room, a dining area and an updated kitchen in more than 2,500 square feet of space. A family/rec room dressed in purple has one of two fireplaces.

Irrespective of the messy details, I think everyone needs to be prepared for the inevitable: the legal obligations facing all of the parties (Bremer Trust, individual heirs, etc.) will require monetizing -- to the greatest extent feasible -- the value of Prince's estate.

In today's entertainment industry, this means many things that Prince would never have allowed, and that are not consonant with his artistic values (or even the expectations of many life-long fans), are going to happen.

I hate to say this, but I can't imagine that in the long run, his family or associates will be able to retain ownership of his catalog. In all likelihood, it will end up in the control of the major labels. That, more than anything, is the tragedy of his failure to prepare a will.

In the process, the industry shackles that Prince worked so hard to change for his own benefit, and that of others, will simply be reinforced.

Business as usual, as if he had never endured the struggles of the last 25 years.

This, for me, is the hardest thing to accept about his death: the fact that the legacy he worked so hard to build, will be lost.

[Edited 7/9/16 13:32pm]

This actually makes me feel physically sick. I'll never buy anything Prince related again if that happens. There is no way Prince was not aware of this possibility, just no way. Last time I ventured into this thread there was a report that correspondence regarding a will was found so one may exist but hadn't been located. I will never believe Prince didn't have one. He was obsessed with owning his stuff he would've seen what happened with MJ & the Beatles catalogue etc. This really stresses me out! I dread to think what will happen. I mean look at how the vultures are still bleeding Jeff Buckley dry with his tiny catalogue!

Nonsense the estate can flourish just like the Jackson, Marly, and Hendrix estate, The family has already brought in L.Londell McMillian and Mr. Koppelman. At some point down the road like 20 or 30 years maybe the family will sell the publishing because none of his siblings are spring chickens but if the sibs have children they are capable of finding good people to run the estate.

Keep in mind the Marley and Hendrix states got off to a bad start but turned around later and those families are still reaping the benefits.

If you figure out what county Chanhansen is located in MN you could try the County Auditor or County Recorder. I am assuming most of the properties are listed in a business name rather than Prince's name.

He owned a ranch in Waller County, Texas but I'm not sure if he still owned it at the time of his passing or not.

By the moderators' logic all official Prince projects after 4/21/2016 are "The Estate", since he's not here any more and it's the judgement of some administrators & collaborators driving what comes out (songs, live albums, remixes, holograms, whatever) and what doesn't.

You could subsume the entire Vault sticky under the "Estate" and have the unwieldiest thing ever, since really anything we'd find out about the Vault is through the workings of the estate.

EDIT: I guess I'm asking how broad this sticky is.

[Edited 6/20/16 11:13am]

Things, for the moment, seem to have quieted down with The Court. (That can change at any moment.)

So..... An overlooked question.....

PurpleBabied asked: "I guess I'm asking how broad this sticky is." As broad as it needs to be. As you pointed out, PurpleBabied, everything on here after 4/21/2016 is now part of "The Estate".

When I asked the Mods to create this sticky thread, my thought was to have a place that The Purple Army could come to and check for miscellaneous court happenings and filings, pure estate news. I was told that any topic specific, that could survive on its own, would be kept as a separate thread. Technically, "The Vault" thread could be added to "The Estate" thread, but as anyone who has visited The Vault thread can see, it is very healthy all on its own. I think if these two threads were combined, it would just be a mess. I think the Mods' decision to leave these two threads separate was a wise decision.

What are the (potential) responsibilities of the Administrator of the Estate?
* Determine heirs and/or beneficiaries;
* Take care of the decedent's property;
* Collect income that comes into the Estate;
* Collect and pay estate debts, while checking their validity;
* Prepare for and pay taxes: federal and state (death/estate) taxes, income taxes for the decedent and the estate;
* Carry out directions of the probate court regarding the estate; and
* Divide and distribute remaining estate assets to the heirs.

(This is for general information purposes only.)

This happens often in The World of Probate (just not in this big of a scale!).

People come out of the woodwork when someone passes, just to make claims against the estate. This is nothing new.

I read an article that said Prince changed attorneys almost yearly. I also read a statement by one of those attorneys and he begged Prince to prepare an Estate Plan and/or Will, something, anything and Prince refused to do so.

If an Estate Plan, Trust or Will was made surely an attorney would have come forward by now, indicating he/she prepared one, and that they have a copy. Each state has their own requirements/rules for attorneys, and the state I live in requires we keep a client's file for a minimum of 7 years. I do wills and I have never destroyed copies of wills (I keep them forever in strorage). Prince hired high falutin attorneys, surely they would have kept a copy of any documents prepared for Prince.

I know someone mentioned above that Bremer Trust said they found correspondence about a will? I cant find that statement anywhere. I have read the exact opposite. Bremer Trust said they have looked in every box, drawer, nook and cranny and have not been able to find one.

I have several theories as to why Prince didnt draft a will......1) he didnt want to sign a contract; 2)for some reason peeps think it is bad luck to draft a will, or he thought he was going to live for many more years, and would draft one later; 3) Prince wanted to have the last laugh and let the vultures tear each other up because it wouldnt matter to him any longer after death; or 4) he knew there was the possibility he had a child(ren) and wanted them to come forward and take the proceeds of the estate instead of siblings.

Even if there was a will it would probably be contested. For example, what if he made one while married to Mani and he left everything to her? HA!

There is no will.....

I have several theories as to why Prince didnt draft a will.....1) he didnt want to sign a contract; 2)for some reason peeps think it is bad luck to draft a will, or he thought he was going to live for many more years, and would draft one later; 3) Prince wanted to have the last laugh and let the vultures tear each other up because it wouldnt matter to him any longer after death; or 4) he knew there was the possibility he had a child(ren) and wanted them to come forward and take the proceeds of the estate instead of siblings.

Even if there was a will it would probably be contested. For example, what if he made one while married to Mani and he left everything to her? HA!

There is no will.....

--- I think he may have put money in trust. Someone correct me but I believe Trust do not have go thru probate and you can put in clauses to shut people up about it.
