. I know what you are getting at (others here seem not to), but I assure you that my original post is not a joke. Read my second post on this thread and you will see I wrote: "Everything was in sync -- his talents, his contributions from band members, his passion, his ambition..." Note the italics.

controversy99 said: This thread is completely preposterous. Mountains is an ok song, but I've never understood the love it gets here. The song glides along in a sweet non-offensive kind of way, but it lacks any bite, urgency, or transcendence. Check this out ... Mountains was the first single where I thought Prince was slipping a bit. It was just so tame. Please, please, please can somebody explain to me what you like so much about this song? Lyrics, beat, guitars, vocals, arrangement, what is it? I can't quite put my finger on why I love this one so much. I always enjoyed Parade- I was probably in 8th grade when I saw the movie and just LOVED it, still do. I think you can really feel his joy when he sings it. For me it's a pretty hopef feeling song that makes me feel really good. Like I just want to open up and sing. You feel his arms outstretched as he sings his heart out. It's good stuff. I think it sounds great on good head phones too. Surprise, surprise.
Another treat. Another trick.

. It shows a performer at his most confident. Prince knew he was it at that point and he unleashes a perfect hard driving song to confirm that. At the peak of his powers, and he knew it. That comes through loud and clear on the recording. Listen to how Prince leads his band - "Guitars and drums on the one." It was a whole vibe of complete control. Beatles had that in '66 and '67. Prince had it on "Mountains." .
Look, you here may not dig the song, but I am not talking about the musicality of the song itself. I am talking about the vibe. The power of supreme confidence of that song. It was his peak. After that there were numerous unsure steps. But with "Mountains," Prince nailed everything. Here it is. Killer groove, masterful vocals,...the whole song is just one great command performance.

. Alert Alert: Anyone who loves "Mountains" is not a true fan. One must love "If I Was Your Girlfriend" to be a true fan. All true Prince fans rate that song as his best. If you don't...you are not a true fan.

It's a flame-y post to begin with. I can name of 30 songs right now that are better than "Mountains", and it's probably one of my two favorite songs on Parade (the other being "Anotherloverholenyohead"). Last great moment was 1986? GTFO. Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Pretty decent song off a superior Prince record, but Under the Cherry Moon, Do U Lie, New Position, Kiss , Another Lover, Sometimes it Snows, and Venus De Milo are easily better for my money. Seems Mountains and Girls and Boys get overloved, tho both were singles and videos. Really do enjoy the Mountains vid, esp Lisa merf

"Mountains" is a good song, but I don't think it is the big masterpiece that some fans think it is.It's not even the best song on Parade, imo.

Mountains is one of my all tme favourite Prince songs too, but to say it was his last masterwork is crazy! ...especially when he delivered the Sign O' The Times album only 12 months later, an album many consider a masterwork of his career.

Oh, god... I knew when Prince died this place would adopt the mentality of a Michael Jackson forum... [Edited 5/16/16 22:41pm] Always cry 4 love, never cry 4 pain.

also, dude was so prolific, i'm always on the lookout for songs I missed that I end up loving. after he died, santana did a tribute, last christmas, I didn't know it was a prince song but assumed it could be because of the falsetto delivery and the style, the result is, another new song that I love. i'd heard the rainbbow children before but not really closely, i still don't know how i missed it.

ya, for me too, and I still love his newest stuff, not every song but hell, I never liked every song on anyone's albums, not just Prince's.

one interesting thing about mountains though, I thought he was saying some deep stuff that I never looked real deep into. The africa divided line was some kind of reference to the slave trade. Those were the days when P still showed a lot of racial ambivalence, the scene where he expresses horror when an older black lady asks to see him in UTCM is telling. It's so good to see how he came home in the end.

. That true? I always thought it was about apartheid.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
well, that's the way i read it, wasn't the word "hijack" somewhere in there? that would seem to insinuate the slave trade.

Look, we all loooove "mountains." but that wasn't even the best thing he did in 1986. No matter the ©️, Paisley Park "official can never ™️ . He gave that to us verbally on Oprah in 1996. You can't take away from us, corporate. I mean O ( + >

How the story started and how it will end What's the use in half a story, half a dream U have 2 climb all of the steps in between......RIP Prince

my top ten of prince would feature songs going all the way up to the last year and in fact, probably most of them would be from 90 onwards, he seemed to be more willing to be more open than he was in the eighties.

i agree that Mountains is Prince's best song! but i feel he had some better songs after that
