Brother Jules' "Remix Experience" Does anyone else get the feeling that the "Remix Experience" CDs that Brother Jules is trying to drum up interest in online is less than legitimate/authorized? I get that he worked for Prince off and on and certainly had access to materials but, considering the state of the estate at this point, I find it unlikely that this project he seems to be gearing up to sell has actually been cleared by the estate for sale.
Someone asked on his FB page if these CDs were "NPG approved," to which he responded, "I am an "official member" of the NPG...." which doesn't really answer the question and, if he thinks that is a legit answer, he seriously doesn't know how copyright or music licensing, etc. works. Just becasue you worked with a guy doesn't mean you get to put things out. Femi Jiya doesn't get to reissue The Rainbow Children just becasue he engineered it.
For comparison, Judith Hill's CD was manufactured and had begun being sold through legit channels (with Prince participating in promotion) just prior to Prnice's death. Now - while the trustees sort things out - they literally can't get the physical CDs out of Paisley Park to continue distribution. If this can't be made to happen, it certainly doesn't seem likely that the estate has cleared any rights to new projects.
With the history of how the original "Remix Experience" (and the 2001 CD singles from the Hit N Run tour) sales were handled, and the quality of - and questionalbe origin of - the original Remix Experience, as much as I am curious to hear this new release... I certainly have some concern about it's legitimacy on several different levels.

Agreed, it's not authorized unless it's a project that Prince signed off on before he died. You don't get to slap the NPG Records logo on something just because you were in the NPG. |
