ya, there are a few that are peaks, even for him. that's the thing, excellence was just expected out of him but sometimes he even went past that. The Hall of Fame performance is one, another is the ONA DVD version of gotta broken heart again. But really, plenty, I haven't even begun to watch the deluge of live footage yet so I'm sure there are some surprises in there.

All right, I'm going to say something about "Mountains". I had listened the Mountains 12" before, but for whatever reason I didn't pay much attention to it. Maybe I thought it was "too long" or something. Well, I was at a Prince listening party in the early nineties and the DJ put on the Mountains 12" and I was just floored. It was by far the highlight of the night. I had never heard that song on a REAL sound system cranked to the gills. It was absolutely fantastic! So funky, so fun, so danceable -- what a groove!! Not only did it turn me into a 12" Mountains fan for life, but I realized it was time to invest in some audio equipment. I remember that day like it was yesterday, so maybe you are onto something, Cloreen.

hell, he was regularly coming out with stuff I liked more, i could name many just from the SOTT period and even his b-sides for the singles from parade were better, love or money and that guitar song, what was the name of it, milo de something or other, it was great.

I just listened to "Mountains" today and it is monumental. It is mighty. Majestic. MAGNIFICENT! What song since "Mountains" can you say that about? Sure Prince has written many, many fine songs over the past thirty years, but nothing has come close to the masterpiece that is "Mountains."
.
"Mountains" - Prince's last masterwork.
.
Yeah, "1+1+1=3" is great, "Face Down" is fantastic, "Sign O The Times" is out of this world, "Space" is superb, and "I Wish U Heaven" is wonderful, but Prince was never able to come close to "Mountains" in thirty years. (In all honesty, no musical artist has been able to come close to "Mountains".) It's time to finally admit that from 1986 onwards, Prince never wrote a song better than "Mountains."
.
It's only mountains and the sea....
.
Come on, sing along to Prince's best.
"There's nothing greater...."

Poor trolling.

biggrin Lovin this thread and all the 'differing' views of 'Mountains'...
cos 4 me as ive posted on another thread Mountains 'just maybe' my all time favorite Prince track
The intro gets me every time....
I have loved hundreds of Prince songs over the years (released and um..otherwise) and I love many of the tracks from recent years and HiTnRUN era, but Mountains has always been there as a favorite - there is something about it.
4 me it has a quality that cant really be put into words but heck ill try ...joyful, timeless, effortless (sounds like its not even trying - like poplife), playful, perfect (as mentioned by Cloreen), almost trancendent as already mentioned above - while not taking itself too seriously cos its 'only mountains' afterall..
Perhaps I love Mountains because I actually do love Mountains (the actual ones) as I climbed a good few.
In fact I often go up Mountains while singing Mountains.. music - ha only kiddin
I also like swimming in 'the sea' - try it - its good for the soul - and be safe of course
or maybe its because listening to Parade for the 1st time on vinyl when it came out in '86 was one of those 'never 4gotten' musical moments in my life.
Anyhow thats my tuppence worth.
I understand many of us have different views and favorite tracks. Of course thats only natural.
But 4 me Mountains is a truly beautiful track. and the video is just 'JUST' i dont have the words..
Prince has many many great and wonderful tracks since Mountains - but maybe just maybe (4 me also) 'theres nothing great-ER' trackwise since then.

God Bless Prince

Honestly, it was great but I personally can think of two or three b-sides within a year of Mountains that I like more. She's Always In my Hair is one and the sign o the times b sides. Shockadelicka and La La La Hee Hee Hee. All comes down to personal taste.

I've not read all of the replies on the thread, so somebody may already have pointed this out. Prince didn't write Mountains, great song though it is. Search the ASCAP website for Work ID: 430378906.

RE the OP: to each his/her own, and there are PLENTY of Prince's "greatest moments" to choose from.

RE GeorgrieAto: if you have the 12-inch single record of "Mountains" then you also have the version spoken of. I don't know how rare it is today, but it's defo out there!

This thread is completely preposterous. Mountains is an ok song, but I've never understood the love it gets here. The song glides along in a sweet non-offensive kind of way, but it lacks any bite, urgency, or transcendence. Check this out ... Mountains was the first single where I thought Prince was slipping a bit. It was just so tame. Please, please, please can somebody explain to me what you like so much about this song? Lyrics, beat, guitars, vocals, arrangement, what is it?

I agree, when Mountains came out back then,I thought it was the beginning of the end. I was wrong, but I remember thinking it wasn't very awesome.

transcendence U said it. The song is so hopeful without even know completely what he is saying. It is so uplifting. That was the song, I knew there was going 2 b a single 4 and a long version.

the whole arrangement and freedom in the song.
