Susannnah Melvoin on posting unreleased material

On Facebook:

"Who's posting unreleased Prince material ?
We are all trying to protect his legacy Here. Maybe wait on throwing it out there. Just imagine what he'd say or do about it.. Please respect him even In death as you did in life.
Your grieving friend
Susannah"

And an hour later:

"I have no issue with the music being out there . I only suggested don't open the gates so fast ..
All good
Don't want haters"

The wooh is on the one!

With all the respect to Susannah I don't care, it's our way to honour his memory.

Susannah has plenty to say considering you know she has tons of unreleased shit (and released shit) in her own collection.

I'm pretty okay with never hearing one of Prince's exgirlfriends offer their opinions on the vault anymore.

I feel like that too - at this moment in time.

It almost feels like, "If I can't have him, nobody will."

I know it's probably more complex than that: Financial concerns, possible embarrassment at youthful racy lyricism, protecting his legacy by not releasing every half-baked mess...

But it's not helping the fans right now. It's making some people look petty and controlling.

This is pretty much how Sheila E. comes across for me at the moment.

It's like...

Your father dies, and your mother decides to burn all the things that he made in his garden shed, while professing love for him.

Not only that, but your mother decides to redecorate the family home, within days of your father's death - because she loves him.

It's bloody weird.

Too true. Although I am guilty of exploiting the unreleased stuff for my own indulgence.

Well good point, but we knew him too, just not personally. But yes we need to be easy on each other right now because we are all going through a lot, and she is distraught and maybe not thinking clearly.

.

There is actually a GoFundMe up there for Susannah that one of her friends started because she is having tough financial times and is having trouble providing for her children, etc. So I'm sure she's under a lot of stress, in general, and this on top of it is tough.

.

But Prince would have been fine with unreleased material coming out. He already said someone would probably release it after he was gone. He could have planned all that better, with a will, but he was assuming he would stick around longer and I wish he was right.

Uhh, all I'm saying is that they have better things to do than to worry about YouTube videos and floodgates in terms of unreleased/unofficial material.

So far, neither Sheila nor Susannah nor Susan Moonsie nor Troy Beyer nor Mayte nor Manuela nor any of his other flames have been named important people in his estate matters. And when you sit on a wealth of tapes and material (of which they no doubt possess), it seems a wee bit bitchy and controlling no matter how many platitudes its dressed up with.

I'm all for respecting the people in his life. I feel for Tyka as I know how it is to lose a sibling. It sucks and its painful and she can eat all the cheetos and dye her hair all shades of purple she wants. That ain't my business.

But if an exgirlfriend comes into the picture and starts huffing and puffing about the vault or unofficial material, that is a crossed line. Even the concept of "respecting his wishes as if he were here" is bullshit. If you were to do that, nothing in the vault would be released because people won't just let his ass die and be dead. How about we worry less about hurting Prince's post mortem feelings and worry about preserving the legacy.

You all are tripping. these are people that are not only fans like most of us, but also were in intimate relationshiops with him. I think it's nothing to do with selfishness, I think they thinking of his wishes. this is a thousand more times intense for them.

But of course, as a fanatic, I want everything to come out. It's the only way I know him. But I cannot feel any ill will towards them.

Shocking lack of respect being shown here for the woman who inspired Prince to write Empty Room, The Beautiful Ones and who knows what all else.

Hey guys, whether right or wrong, we just gotta stick together.

.

These are crazy times. We need things to settle down then we'll see more clearly the path ahead.

.

I didn't know Empty Room was written with Susannah in mind.

.

In fact I'm listening to the NPGMC version as I type - crazy coincidence.

Generally speaking, I find I can safely ignore anybody who ever says "haters". But I can understand that she's a bit fed up with some of the shite that's flooded her way since her original post.

with all due respect, why does she deserve respect for the songs Prince wrote?

but nobody is burning anything and the analogy requires that the contents of the garden shed were encased in a foot of concrete and Dad flip flopped a bit about ever showing anyone the stuff smile

i think its possible that the people who have loved him are waiting for any kind of document or directions about the vault so that his wishes can be followed? I was just listening to that old kevin smith account of prince and years ago 1 particular producer had 50 prince videos ( like videos with a narrative/costumes - not live performances) she had made with him in the vault and they were for songs never made public.

like Ufoclub said, these are people who knew Prince intimately,we can't imagine the elevated reverence they'd feel for his wishes about now.

No disrespect, but the value of Prince's creations is way more than monetary. Giving it away doesn't cheapen it. In fact you could argue that music that is not heard has no value because by definition it should be played and enjoyed.

Who has the right to decide what, when and how much is a different argument. Apparently it is NOT up to Susannah. She's entitled to her opinion, even if I disagree with it.

I hear what she's saying and I get it. But Prince wouldn't even want us owning or listening to bootlegs, and there's no way I'm stopping that! :)

Her follow-up response is good. And measured.

I have sent friends some YouTube links I found to unreleased material. I want to share my love for Prince after his passing. Maybe it's wrong of me, but it's part of my healing. I want people to hear Adonis & Bathsheba, for example, to understand what the world just lost.

People celebrated his life in different ways & people will grieve in different ways - just as they approached his music in different ways.

The opinions of an ex-girlfriend from decades ago hardly matter. She has her individual approach to grief, just as we all have ours. It's not going to stop the material from being available.

Yeah, I don't remember Prince seeing it that way

Well this is it, and here people are trying to shout her down for voicing it and calling her arrogant?? Holy fuck, who are we to say that to her?

Whatever, I've said my piece, i'll leave people to bitch about her if they please.

Prince's work should be open to the public as he is an icon of significant cultural value.

Imagine, we were not allowed to see the mona lisa because da vinci didnt like the painting or didnt want us to.

Or that the white house was shut down because it didnt have the right lick of paint, or any other spurious reason an individual feels it is their "right" to uphold.

Prince should belong to the public and not just to a few "chosen" individuals.

Previously released videos I think is fine to put online... I mean, we know Prince didn't want them up there, but it's about time his official films and videos were on Youtube!

But Bootlegs? No. That's a bit out of order... although as a fan I'm happy to hear them! smile

.

Let's wait and see if there's some official releases of these tracks before spreading them in poor quality for free.

For the record, I don't object to Prince's music being shared in the slightest - I am vigorously in favour of that. What disappoints me is that she's getting shit from people for saying what she did, especially at this time.
