On the song Zeroes from 1987's Never Let Me Down, Bowie sings "Me? My little red corvette has passed me by." Many people think this is Bowie acknowledging the torch of innovation (so to speak) had been passed along to another amazing artist.

Bowie and Prince are my two favorite artists. I'd be delighted if Prince acknowledged Bowie's passing. Of course I would. But I don't EXPECT him to. For all we know, Prince really admired Bowie and the death hit him hard. Maybe made him think about his own age and mortality. Or maybe he didn't really get hit at all. Who knows? Regardless, people grieve in their own ways. Nobody should grieve on demand.

There is a fair amount of evidence to support they were mutual admirers of each other and that's to be expected really - there are as many similarities between them as there are opposites. I'm sure his passing has affected Prince - it has affected many. But people expecting anyone to behave in a certain way is somewhat appalling - people deal with grief in their own way, not "your" way. Prince will probably cover Bowie at the upcoming gala. He may have sent a private message to Iman. He may still post publicly. He may do none of these things. It is nobody else's business though, that is for sure.

I'd love to hear Prince do "Fashion" or "Moonage Daydream". "Heroes" would be pretty great too if he stripped it down. I think the falsetto would work on that one, maybe on just the piano or acoustic guitar.

Moonage Daydream - my favorite DB song - love love love. Have always said that i think Prince could do this justice - tearing up the guitar - awesome. Such great guitar on this track

Those are two of my favorites. Lady Grinning Soul is so beautiful. And Wild is the Wind has such a fantastic ending. I really dig the 1982 (?) remix version and the live version from the 2000 BBC concert.

I'm going to chime in here.

I do find it a little irritating that Prince never seems to acknowledge these kinds of events when they happen. It wouldn't hurt for Prince to occasionally just send out a short message of condolence, even if its just via a tweet on Twitter. I have no doubt that Prince and Bowie probably at some stage met each other, most likely several times. These big stars tend to often run into each other at various events and within the circles that they associate with in the music business.

In the case of Michael Jacksons death, given that Prince and MJ were contemporaries, musical rivals to some extent, they had indeed interacted with each other numerous times across their careers, and to a large degree, even shared the same audience, it troubled me a little that Prince only spoke about MJ when prompted by a reporter well after the fact. The fact is, it wouldn't have hurt Prince just to get on the front foot and issue a short statement paying homage to the contribution that MJ or in this case, Bowie made to the music scene. To some degree, the contribution that both Jackson and Bowie made the music scene would have in some way, either directly or indirectly, benefited Prince as he went about building his career in the early 80s.

Considering that many of musics biggest stars have released statements over the last few hours paying their respects to Bowie including Madonna, Pharrell Williams, Cher, Billy Idol, Kanye West to name just a few, have all issued a few words via social media just to pay respect to Bowie, it is the silence from the Prince camp which sometimes gives the impression the man lives on a different planet to the rest of us and doesn't really have any respect whatsoever for anything or anybody outside the perimeter of Paisley Park.

Jesus...hey, here's a thought; maybe he did something in PRIVATE. Like sent his condolences PRIVATELY, as he is wont to do in certain situations. Everything people do doesn't have to be in the public eye.

Bowie has a diverse catalog. I'm a Prince fan but also like Bowie. I would checkout more so 90s and 70s Bowie or get one of the greatest hits cd collections that span, that would give you an idea if Bowie is for you. I think though most anyone if they are opened they would find some good music. Diverse.

Why do you want him to? Not everybody has to speak on everything. He didn't speak on MJ's passing until a reporter asked him during an interview.

Can you link me to that? What did Prince say about it?

In an early fan Q&A session that was at the "Dawn" website he had (1996-97?) he was asked by someone if he'd like to work with David Bowie. I think his answer was "you should have been there".

My memory might play tricks on me though. I haven't anyone else here on prince.org referring to the comment, or even posted any other quotes from the session.

Bowie visiting Paisley Park in 1987 has been documented in several books by this point, so we knew already they had most likely met and spent some time together.

Yup - well documented that Bowie was at Paisley Park and that was after Prince attended one of Bowie's shows in Minneapolis (sat at the sound - desk no less, which is the best place to hear a gig usually, so he was certainly paying full attention!). It would seem highly likely that having such a fantastic artist as Bowie in Prince's studio complex would result in them at least jamming and recording, if not writing whole new tracks (Bowie is known to work as fast as Prince - he reportedly wrote Life on Mars in an afternoon and Under Pressure was written and recorded similarly quickly whilst on a cocaine and wine binge with Freddie Mercury!). Prince does seem to do this with a lot of musicians who are invited to Paisley (even Dave Grohl), so why not Bowie?

Because they either never happened or they just weren't good.

Prince never put out what he did together with Miles Davis either.

I posted the comment on what I think I could remember Prince answering in an old Q&A session. I want to emphasize that I am not sure if he ever answered in that manner, as that was 20 years ago.

I agree with you, Bowie and Prince are my favorites as well. I dont know about you, or Prince, but its certainly hit ME with the spectre of my own mortality, and I daresay anyone over 50 is a little more conscious of it now than they were last week.

I dont expect Prince to acknowlege anything publicly, much less grieve publicly ...but it got me thinking more outside of the issues of the music business in general and it did make me send off a few tweets on his page regarding him relasing his earlier works on youtube. F-spotify and all that. Princes music is bigger than Prince, the man. Bowie opened a crack in the culture for Prince to burst wide open...Princes cultural significance in the early days is socially and culturally a clear torch passed from Bowie to Prince.

Prince is denying millions of kids the opportunity to be infuenced by the path that he blazed, and by holding on so tightly to everything that he's already profited from pre 1990 - he denies a whole generation, a whole culture a whole swath of a younger generation the ability to see how you can move through the world.

Its selfish and petty and small at this point. One thing Bowie understood quite easily was his effect on culture and he didnt get in the way of it. I hope Prince gets the f out of his own way and sees the larger picture for generations to come.

Prince isn't one for making those sorts of public statements, it's not his style. He never said anything like that when we lost James Brown and MJ, so he sure ain't gonna break the rule now.

My guess is he highly respected Bowie and was/ is shocked by the news and like us, has been turning it over in his mind the last day or two.

I would expect something more like a piano/ acoustic guitar cover of a Bowie song at a concert in the next year or two when he feels like it, or maybe a passing reference to a Bowie song in a music passage or lyric on a new track over a similar time period.

I aim not to get upset by things I have no control over. What Prince does or doesn't say about anything is one of those things, so I just let it be and accept that as of now Prince hasn't commented on Bowie's passing - which by the way is the only fact as of now, that Prince hasn't made a public comment about Bowie's passing - all the rest, that Prince is aloof and Prince doesn't care, that he's not human is just a reflection of your own thinking and nothing else.

Another interesting observation is that when a musician passes on, everyone and their mother seems to rush to the computer to buy their music, making their music the #1 seller on many sites for many weeks. What was wrong with their music while they were alive?

I have to say, I don't care if it is his bullshit cult he belongs to, Prince is being an arrogant prick by not making a statement about David Bowie. A few words can mean so much.

.

He is being a rockstar and acting too proud to acknowledge a man who inspired his career. Prince's run of seamless 80s albums with a new sound and new look for each is taken directly from Bowie's 1970s run of classics. Plus Bowie was never anything but nice to him.

.

These are times my respect for Prince cools severely, Bowie was a bigger star, and never kicked upa stink about his music on Youtube, he never gagged the press and never joined any wacko Christian hate cults. If anything wqatching Blackstar and some other videos, I get the feeling Bowie never prayed to the God above. Seriously the Blackstar is a Black pentagram, and the video shows him as a rasta covered Baphomet and girls expiating a skull in darkness. Not that I give a shit, I find that religion much better than the Jegiveusallur money and hate fags witness cult.

.

Prince needs to get off his cloud and revisit the world of ordinary people, he is no one special and I am sure his shit smells the same as everyone elses. I love Prince's music but can't stand him as a deranged ego maniac.
