Has Prince given a statement on the death of David Bowie? I hope he has or will really soon.

Why do you want him to? Not everybody has to speak on everything. He didn't speak on MJ's passing until a reporter asked him during an interview.

SO right. We are so infected with social media that everyone expects some kind of unnecessary communication for everything.

For real. As if by typing "R.I.P David Bowie" has any meaning. But yet people flood the death sticky to post that. And for what? Nobody has the time to even read all of that bullshit. They guy was 69 and had a great life. Enough said.

This stupid shit again...
The only reason people want Prince to PUBLICLY acknowledge someone's death is so they can read about it and go all fammy...
What if Prince sent a personal and private message to the appropriate people who actually matter at this time and were in Bowie's inner circle? That would mean so much more than some random tweet or facebook post saying the usual stuff when someone dies...

And even if he didn't... Why fucking care?

Hi Every one
I don t know about prince on bowie but I remember well a french tv show ( I live in paris) around 2000 where bowie was compared to a music chameleon by the presenter and since this same presenter was known to be a prince fan he asked bowie if he thought prince was also a chameleon.. and what he thought about how more generally.. .
Bowie laughed and stated.
" prince has the same problem as me. He works too much!!! But he s a way more focused man than I am.. and his music is way more specific."

One of the more disturbing developments in western societies is 'grief policing' - that everyone is expected to somehow put their mourning on display when a public figure passes. Here in the UK, it really started with the death of Princess Diana, and the media led hounding of the royals - especially her two poor sons - to wear their sadness on their sleeves. I say let everyone - including Prince - deal with the news about Bowie in their own way.

Prince is in a Catch 22.

He is better off taking HIS OWN APPROACH.

TOPIC- Bowie is the Sun and Prince a small moon so even if he doesn't acknowledge it directly, he knows.

This comparison would have made Bowie laugh and laugh.

Why do you need to assign a hierarchy? By the way, Bowie was briefly influenced by Prince (like a lot of people) on Day In Day Out. I am sure he respected Prince so why not refrain from those silly stellar metaphors?

I see that small moon up there but it doesn't warm me like the Sun does.

And the small moon once turned out to be the Death Star.

You're welcome.

-

TOPIC- I see both sides, why some people want to hear Prince's response to Bowie's passing and why others believe it irrelevant. Prince could have been a closet Bowie-freak and wrote a masterpiece in honor of the moment so let's hear it! Or, he was a respected fellow artist but feels so personal connection, or ... who knows. If he says something I would be interested in knowing it and if he doesn't I wouldn't care that he didn't.

Agreed. In my experience, true grief and contemplation is often silent.

Whatever happened to people living lives of 'quiet desperation'?

Exactly. Michael Jackson fans were PISSED when Diana Ross remained completely silent about his passing. I thought it was weird too, considering their history, but people have different personalities.

The same way there are sobbers at funerals, there are people that mourn inside and don't shed a tear. There are people that roll all over the floor and people that feel the need to be strong for others.

I feel like that's how he deals with death. smile

I'd love to hear Prince do "Fashion" or "Moonage Daydream". "Heroes" would be pretty great too if he stripped it down. I think the falsetto would work on that one, maybe on just the piano or acoustic guitar.

I'm afraid that your expectation of Prince showing public grief/sympathy/condolences etc. says more about you than about him. Look inside for the answer and your feelings, you won't find it in Prince's actions.

Prince is a human. Part of being human is to die. He and Bowie were musicians. For all we know, that's the extent of their relationship. It's their job. Prince probably feels sad that someone who had a similar job to him has passed and left behind a young wife and daughter but he's also probably proud that Bowie's legacy will live on. That should be satisfactory to all.

100% correct.

Prince and Bowie met in 1987 at Paisley Park along with Donnie Simpson, in a private room.

Personally, I love to hear Prince cover Oh You Pretty Thing or Time Will Crawl, but I think he is more likely to go for the mid to late 70s', from his radio influenced years.

My bet would be Sound and Vision. Fits the bill in more ways that one.

Failing that, Fame or Golden Years.

They crossed path around sign o times film edit as Bowie n crew for a screening after P attended bowie concert n then around Bowie's bday at msg? I think 97? I always took it as religious reasons as well. Though he covers Jackson's now I'd like to see him cover some Bowie because some those songs are damn good.

He played Let´s Dance (together with Nile Rodgers) at the Essence Festival in 2014. There´s a video but I know it´s not ok to post it here.

And Apollonia mentioned that he sang David Bowie songs for her in private.

On the song Zeroes from 1987's Never Let Me Down, Bowie sings "Me? My little red corvette has passed me by." Many people think this is Bowie acknowledging the torch of innovation (so to speak) had been passed along to another amazing artist.

Bowie and Prince are my two favorite artists. I'd be delighted if Prince acknowledged Bowie's passing. Of course I would. But I don't EXPECT him to. For all we know, Prince really admired Bowie and the death hit him hard. Maybe made him think about his own age and mortality. Or maybe he didn't really get hit at all. Who knows? Regardless, people grieve in their own ways. Nobody should grieve on demand.

I'm going to chime in here.

I do find it a little irritating that Prince never seems to acknowledge these kinds of events when they happen. It wouldn't hurt for Prince to occasionally just send out a short message of condolence, even if its just via a tweet on Twitter. I have no doubt that Prince and Bowie probably at some stage met each other, most likely several times. These big stars tend to often run into each other at various events and within the circles that they associate with in the music business.

In the case of Michael Jacksons death, given that Prince and MJ were contemporaries, musical rivals to some extent, they had indeed interacted with each other numerous times across their careers, and to a large degree, even shared the same audience, it troubled me a little that Prince only spoke about MJ when prompted by a reporter well after the fact. The fact is, it wouldn't have hurt Prince just to get on the front foot and issue a short statement paying homage to the contribution that MJ or in this case, Bowie made to the music scene. To some degree, the contribution that both Jackson and Bowie made the music scene would have in some way, either directly or indirectly, benefited Prince as he went about building his career in the early 80s.

Considering that many of musics biggest stars have released statements over the last few hours paying their respects to Bowie including Madonna, Pharrell Williams, Cher, Billy Idol, Kanye West to name just a few, have all issued a few words via social media just to pay respect to Bowie, it is the silence from the Prince camp which sometimes gives the impression the man lives on a different planet to the rest of us and doesn't really have any respect whatsoever for anything or anybody outside the perimeter of Paisley Park.

It may be a religious thing as I don't even think he acknowledged his parents' passing. I'm no even sure he attended the service. In any case, at least you know it's nothing against Bowie, Jacson, etc.

Religious reasons are always a convenient excuse. For bigots like Kim Davis & for assholes like Prince.
