Prince on Bowie

Has Prince given a statement on the death of David Bowie? I hope he has or will really soon.

Why do you want him to? Not everybody has to speak on everything. He didn't speak on MJ's passing until a reporter asked him during an interview.

And Prince pays tribute playing songs in concert like he did for MJ. Thats the best tribute a musician can do.

funny watching a 1983 inteview of how Bowie is challenging MTV and Mark Goodman for not playing enough black artists and Prince's name is brought up...

Just an FYI.

I'm going to chime in here.

I do find it a little irritating that Prince never seems to acknowledge these kinds of events when they happen. It wouldn't hurt for Prince to occasionally just send out a short message of condolence, even if its just via a tweet on Twitter. I have no doubt that Prince and Bowie probably at some stage met each other, most likely several times. These big stars tend to often run into each other at various events and within the circles that they associate with in the music business.

In the case of Michael Jacksons death, given that Prince and MJ were contemporaries, musical rivals to some extent, they had indeed interacted with each other numerous times across their careers, and to a large degree, even shared the same audience, it troubled me a little that Prince only spoke about MJ when prompted by a reporter well after the fact. The fact is, it wouldn't have hurt Prince just to get on the front foot and issue a short statement paying homage to the contribution that MJ or in this case, Bowie made to the music scene. To some degree, the contribution that both Jackson and Bowie made the music scene would have in some way, either directly or indirectly, benefited Prince as he went about building his career in the early 80s.

Considering that many of musics biggest stars have released statements over the last few hours paying their respects to Bowie including Madonna, Pharrell Williams, Cher, Billy Idol, Kanye West to name just a few, have all issued a few words via social media just to pay respect to Bowie, it is the silence from the Prince camp which sometimes gives the impression the man lives on a different planet to the rest of us and doesn't really have any respect whatsoever for anything or anybody outside the perimeter of Paisley Park.

It may be a religious thing as I don't even think he acknowledged his parents' passing.

I'm no even sure he attended the service.

In any case, at least you know it's nothing against Bowie, Jacson, etc.

I always took it as religious reasons as well. Though he covers Jackson's now I'd like to see him cover some Bowie because some those songs are damn good.

And I do genuinely find that a little sad. I know Prince has a reputation for being aloof, I just feel he would do himself a big favour by making some ackowledgement of the passing of Bowie. Even if it were just a one sentence message on Twitter. It doesn't have to be overtly emotional, just some kind of recognition of what the music world outside of the walls of Paisley Park is feeling today.

We live in a weird, fake age.

I appreciate and take Prince's silence over Kanye and David Cameron/Beckhams false platitudes any day. I'd love a journalist to ask them to recite a verse and chorus from one of Bowie's songs on camera. Guaranteed fail.

As a poster child for the tobacco industry, Mr 50 cigarettes A Day Bowie — also an enthusiastic meth/heroin/cocaine addict — seems to represent the worst aspects of the music industry and pop culture which Prince often rails against in his own music.

Prince doesn't often acknowledge the corporatist drivel the main scream media rolls out to keep the masses manipulated, living in fear and divided from one another. Most of his music is a refreshing counter to corporatist culture.

He never touched the Trayvon Martin scandal and only seemed to mention recent tragedies (M. Brown, F. Gray) to add color to a song that also grappled with larger issues (war/peace/inner city black-on-black gun violence). Unlike Leonard Nimoy, Bowie never spoke out about how drugs destroyed his life, despite the positive influence that could have had on many young people and other addicts.

It's not that it will have any effect on my view of David Bowie. I am merely stating that I don't like how Prince is often silent whilst his contemporaries usually just put out some form of tribute to the deceased peer.

I've just seen in the last few hours, Lenny Kravitz has used his Facebook account to pay tribute to Bowie. I just think that putting out some form of written tribute to the man is the honoruable thing to do.

Hanna Welton officially payd tribute to Bowie on twitter.

Probably Prince doesn't do these kind of things, first because he's at some point not good at it, or isn't aware of it, not capable of asking his staff to do it for him or not aware of it, or his believes are troubeling him from doing so...

But, he doesn't need to do anything at all.

He just needs to be who he is: that funky skinny motherfucker with a high voice creating great music that we all love.

-

Rest in peace David Jones Bowie, "The Dame".

You made my world and the awareness of it worth a while by letting us know that we always have to look for the new in everything, and stay sharp.

-

And people, never foget, it's not Prince or Lady GaGa, but Bowie himself who created the possibility for all of us misfits that an oddity was a precious thing to be. It's him who created the path for people like Prince to be accepted for what they are and wanted to be in public.

And, he was humble, never looked down on anyone, or let something like believes dictate him and others. He was well read, intelligent, always keen enough to follow it all. Never lived in his studio, but in a real world. And thén eventually went to a studio to translate his ecperiences into music.
Prince can learn from that.

Bowie alwqays kept things private the way some should, and he gave stardom that much need mysteiourness. Something Prince is good at too.

In a way, we all need that sort of mystery.

"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves. And wiser people so full of doubts" (Bertrand Russell 1872-1972)

I agree with a lot of what you said, but some people really look at death in a different way. To them its not tragic, sad, etc. I don't know Prince's reasoning for doing what he does, but it appears that there is a little disconnect(how Prince views death, as oppose to how some other people view it). I agree 100% though, that it wouldn't hurt for him to give his condolences when things like this happen(and to be fair, at times he has done that). I would be willing to bet though, that when people who are his musical peers, die, it does affect him.

Rest in Peace Bettie Boo. See u soon.

I find it irritating that there's an expectation of everyone to indulge in mass grieving when someone dies/ something tragic happens....we're at a point in history where the public outpouring of grief via social media is ubiquitous to the point of it being meaningless.

Thousands of people die every day. Was Bowie's death/ life more important than any of those or should Prince comment on all of the personal tragedies?

One of the more disturbing developments in western societies is 'grief policing' - that everyone is expected to somehow put their mourning on display when a public figure passes. Here in the UK, it really started with the death of Princess Diana, and the media led hounding of the royals - especially her two poor sons - to wear their sadness on their sleeves.

I say let everyone - including Prince - deal with the news about Bowie in their own way.

It's grief porn. SHould he then not comment on Lemmy's passing?

I find this social media griefing to be without substance. If you know the ppl griefing, you share your empathy with them, social media is not the venue.

That's how I feel as well. There's no need for everyone to go into public grieving mode so as to comfort other greivers. Everyone knows that Prince admires and respects the art of tons of musicians. And no one knows what Prince does or doesn't do off camera or off record. We don't know what he has or hasn't done, or will do, behind the scenes, quietly, or in a one on one fashion with ornfor the Bowie family. I don't doubt that at some point Prince will do something to let the Bowie family know in some way his respect for the art of the person lost. Prince is usually pretty low key with that kinda stuff. Typically doesn't showboat with this kinda stuff or put it all out public.

Why do you need to assign a hierarchy? By the way, Bowie was briefly influenced by Prince (like a lot of people) on Day In Day Out. I am sure he respected Prince so why not refrain from those silly stellar metaphors?
