Thought would try to lighten the mood since things got so shit around here for a while.. so am going to hope my publishers won't kill me for sharing a funny one chapter of my book (not out until next october) as a little teaser. Each chapter has a song title (in this case the song is Lee Perry's. And is posted below this post.). It is the true story of a night that will live in infamy and I hope one day Charlie Murphy plays me in the sketch.
Disco Devil

Soon as I arrived on my last day, the Kabbalah teacher spun me out the classroom door by my elbow, into the rounded corridor, whispering loudly in my ear “You know fame is a curse and the devil is a gentleman? As I nodded my affirmative, he swung me back in, saying “Don’t forget to leave the party before they all get drunk and start fighting.”

Nine months later my tour has finished and I've rented a house in Los Angeles because I couldn’t go home until after the MTV awards. Spanish looking house halfway up a hill. Beautiful old white plasterwork on the outside. Even a tiny cross at the front door, just like Ireland. I can see the Hollywood sign away to my left when I’m on my patio. Sometimes there are young deers clambering about in the trees to my right.

But one whole wall of the downstairs sitting room is a glass window, facing so that you can see down into the city. At night its like a black frame around the lights of living hell. Every time the dusk comes I get anxious.

I had my bedroom painted purple. I thought “What the hell, you can have a purple bedroom in America, that’s the whole point.” In Ireland you’d never have a purple bedroom unless you were a hooer. And since in Ireland sex is a sin, you can’t be a hooer because you wouldn’t have any customers. So no one has ever had a purple bedroom, apart from Archbishop John Charles McQuaid.

As I’m figuring what to wear one mid-week morning, the phone rings in my room. ‘Effeminate but oddly, irritated male voice asks “Is that Shine-head O’Kahn-er?”
I say “No, this is Sinead O’Connor” just to wind him up. Then I ask him who he is.

He says he's Prince.

‘Says he wants to send a car down for me later, and let’s hang out.

I met him in a club when my first album came out, but we never talked really. We were just getting off on the tunes the DJ was playing. Sly Stone and such.

We haven’t met or spoken since. He didn’t have anything to do with the recording of Nothing Compares 2 U. This call in my purple bedroom is the first time we’ve been in contact in since 1988.

I’m still twenty-three. Me and my friends get romantic ideas. We all thought maybe me and him would fall in love.

At very least we thought me and him would get on well, because the lovely Steve Fargnoli (my manager) had previously managed him, and had first introduced us ...

This is a really bizarre story

I remember hearing this story in 1991.I don't know what to believe!

I was fully prepared to read this and say i believe every word. But........ I dont think Duane would have acted like that. He would have told little brother where to shove it. And Prince's irises dissolving and going fully white? how does she explain that?

I am sure Prince was probably in the wrong that night but Sinead is nuts.

I believe she and Prince had a meeting that did not go well, and I'm sure he siad something to her about her femininity (or lack thereof) and foul language...but that's about it. This broad is BONKERS

If her story is true,I feel so bad for Duane.....seems like he was so scared of his famous brother!

She describes Prince's home as very dark,with only a few dim lights.....and she describes how weird his eyes are when he stared at her......OMG,is Prince a vampire?!

(I do not like the Prince & Rosie live version... and the orig version sounds "false" imo with those strings)

so between teh article and the roling stone blurb, she thinks Prince's irises disappeared (which is impossible) and that her one cover of his song, which was her only hit, financially saved Prince?

I wonder why Prince had a problem with her swearing in interviews? Madonna swears in interviews too,and he seems to be friendly with her.

It's become very public recently, it's painful really. There's plenty people on here who think her only song is nothing compares 2 U who love to get a dig in Revelling in their own ignorance.

Then perhaps she should really be concentrating on getting herself better and not putting a big ol' on her forehead by dragging out this long forgotten foolishness, every time she's in need of some attention.

First of all, terms like bonkers, nuts, crazy, etc. are not helpful, she's been very public about her mental health being poor.

Second, I believe her when she says she had a very poor time with Prince, except her perception of these events is so highly dramatic with all the elements of ah horror movie that you can't help but wonder in what state she was as every little thing is described as creepy and she goes as far as saying his irises changed suddenly. Sounds to me like her fears shaped her perception like when you go to a so-called haunted house and every little creak is a ghost. This can happen to anyone under the right circumstances but I think her account is typical of someone who is bipolar experiencing an unpleasant event far more dramatically as others normally would.

Her story does not contradict other stories we've heard about Prince from staff, or even journalists who wrote critically about him whom he later tried to intimidate. Minus the eyes white-ing over, her story about this incident has been pretty consisent over the years.

It is her ONLY hit in the US where it was a huge hit, her folloup single peaked at 60, no other song she released cracked the top 100. She is a one hit wonder. Cartainly nobody thinks taht's the only song she ever recorded, but for the vast majority of people that's the only song anyone ever heard her sing. If not for that one song, nobody would even know who she is.

People are saying that it's hard to believe anything in an account that claims Prince's irises dissapeared when everyone knows that's physically impossible.

I was thinking the same thing but the bashing reminds me of females describing how they were abused/rape and no one is believing them and even in court they try to make the victim doubt their own story.They want to act like the woman is crazy or deserved it, but we don't know what all happened that night between her and Prince. He was younger then and we know how bratty Prince can get but we should never dismiss the case..we know there's two sides to a story and we know Prince has two...
