Agree with some other orgers... Phase II is more solid than Phase I !

*2Y.2D. ... "Peach" vibe

*Big City ... Montreux r.i.p Claude Nobs

*Stare funky hot!

*Black Muse ...kind of disco funk

*Revelation...Masterpiece!!!

Scroll up, there's a little Pentacle along with the traditional BVH cranky pants posts + some oddly restrained morsels of Hatrina (my favorite!). I think we'll get the others as soon as they get over their Saturday morning hangover.

I don't care WHO makes it, I just can't listen to mediocre music...even if it's free. And I damn sure ain't paying for it, repeatedly. So being on the outside now-- looking in-- I can't be mad because Prince's pimp game is strong. shrug

Hell, I find myself almost wanting to respect it. wink

Does anyone else wonder why Prince wanted this album released? It's not really an album.

Does he need an album to tour? Does he think this can sell millions? Does he think there is a hit on here somewhere? I don't get it. He could release hundreds of tracks that he surely has lying around from the same period of time if he were so inclined. There just doesn't seem, to me, to be much of a point in pressing Warner to release an album that won't sell. Why not just upload tracks as he's completes them directly to Tidal and be done with it?

Oh yeah, $$$, the advance.

I think he just wants Warner to pay him, then write it off on their books somewhere.

My favorite Prince album in quite awhile. The tracklist looks like a random mixtape, but it actually flows really well. Track by track:

Baltimore - sounds much better in an album context. I'm ok with this, but it's still a bit corny. 6/10

Rockn... - really solid version. The horns playing that staccato riff are waaay better than the cheesy keyboards of the original. Actually, I've liked all versions of this song except the original. 8/10

2Y2D -- a bit generic, sort of fun. Horns are good again, which is funny because I don't like too many horns in Prince's music usually. This album is an exception. "Just enuff old school" says Prince. Most of the lyrics are good except the chorus, 7/10

Look at... - really solid. I like the jazzy vibe. There's s D'Angelo riff in there that I can't quite place. Nice keyboard solo. Again, the horns are cool, not overdone. Flute is tight. "Whoever made you should be praised", that's a cool line. 9/10

Stare - sounds better than the first release in 3 parts. Funky. Funkier than I remember. Some generic lyrics, but also some clever things. "Seconds things first" is a nice turn of phrase. 9/10

Xtraloveable - why oh why did he take the life out of this song? I was hoping he'd go for something closer to the original unreleased version, but we got the midtempo funk-lite thang from a few years ago again. The congas?/bongos? are the best part. It's still solid, despite being a watered down compared to the original. 7/10

Groovy Potential - like many others, I'm glad to see this made it onto an album. Only complaint is that it drags a bit. 8/10

When She Comes - I like the bluesy jazzy vibe. This is really good. And it's just a touch nasty. 10/10

Screwdriver - are you serious?!? Why is the terrible song on here? It sounds better than I remember, which ain't saying much. 4/10

Black Muse - reminds me of "Black Gold" by Esperanza Spalding. Both have a poppy, somewhat cheesy, somewhat sophisticated feel. this has a cool vibe overall. 9/10

Revelation - stone cold classic. I love this jam. I was sitting on the couch with my wife, and yep, we just had to kiss. Such a romantic feeling in this one. 10/10

Big City - sounds too much like a Broadway tune. And it's not in a good way like Strays of the World. But it gets points for "dirty little hotel room" and just sheer energy. 7/10

Overall 8.5/10. I really like some of the grown folks music on here. It's about time, considering he's in late 50s. The one thing it's missing is a good single. Time will tell if it's an 8 or a 9 overall.

Bonus:
And I discovered an even better album -- start with X's Face and let it run through the last 5 songs of phase one and then all of phase two. Now that's a great album. 1000 X's & O's is basically the single that phase two lacks. X's Face gives the album a little edginess.

2015 turned out pretty good in Prince music-land.

Most of ur reviews I feel u always over rate the tracks... lol But this one is spot on...

Revelation and Look At Me, Look At U are the best tracks on the album IMO.

I agree with you, about all of it...but When She Comes, is more than just a touch nasty - its wrapped in an early 70's sweet soul blanket but when you really listen to the lyrics... ::blush:: DAYUM Dirty Prince is still in there and as horny as ever lololol - and amen to that smile

I still gotta give this collection a few more listens, but I like it how he's managed to make tracks from different erasm like "Baltimore", "Extraloveable" and "Black Muse", fit together so well.

This collection sounds a lot like "The Vault..." release from 1999 to me, but just with a rock'n'roll sound on some of the tracks. It's a small miracle how well even "Screwdriver" fiits in there.

I love that he dropped this basically out of nowhere. Sure, he mentioned it on Twitter, but it didn't sound very likely that it would come out anytime soon, if at all.

Enjoying it, reminds me of The Vault, a nice jazzy feel throughout, quite solid songs, if nothing groundbreaking, one classic bootleg updated (Old Friends 4 Sale on Vault, Extralovable on 2). Much prefer less toucheding up on 2 as compared to Phase 1. Hope to buy at my local walmart soon, Thanks Prince

In the last year we have had 4 new albums name another artist that dose that? You complain when nothing comes out and you complain when it does. This song is amazing. The horn has so much room to sing as if in duet with him.

My god its beautiful.

Revelation

Revelation.....
Revelation.....

Its coming back to me now
You and I were meant to be together
And how

Revelation...
Revelation...

It seems like you've always been here
Now that you are
Stay with me forever my dear

Revelation...
Revelation

If ever, if ever there was ever
such a thing as time, oooh babe
It's useless,
so useless to me now
for in your arms is everything
in your arms
everything

An army of haters one by one
will do what they will to everyone
but the task at hand until we see the sun
is to keep doing you
until you come
to
Revelation...

Revelation ....

Can I play with you now...
Can I, can I play with you now....

It's all coming back to me know
Like it was deep in the ocean
I beat my sword into a plough (correction from cloud)
Shared a heavenly potion
Future queen
Half east half west
The truth somewhere
Blessed in between

Through english glamour casting spell

through hebrew greek and roman hell
higher to the overstand
the color of the pharohs hand
the color of the pharohs hand
the color of the pharohs hand

Good point. Just like THE VAULT because it basically puts a bunch of stragglers togetether. Still, props to Prince for putting a bunch of solid--even great--songs in one place. Phase One was so bad I felt like he was done, lost it...thankfully I was wrong.
