Prince wanted people to wonder if he was bisexual/gay.

That's about it, to this day even with this article.

Sorry....it's simply "sexuality"......he is merely making some vocalizations before saying the word.

Prince is one the most homophobic artists I know. If there were only men in his audience at concerts, he would never perform again, let alone write another song. He does it all for the ladies, plain and simple.

He's a JW now and they don't approve of homosexuality. He wanted Wendy and Lisa to renounce their lesbianism but they refused, which is probably the real reason why he won't do a Revolution reunion.

but anyway.....in 1980,Prince was "anything goes".I doubt that he was homophobic back then.

I knew which lyrics he was referring to, the debate is as old, as the album itself.

Once again, if you took this lyric to mean something sexual, you don't understand the song.

Completely agree. This is one of my absolute favorites by Prince. This song doesn't even touch upon sexuality and is a very deep song, imho. And anyone that interprets those lines as being sexual, truly does not understand this song.

Even if the line isn't meant to be explicitly sexual, the intent was to impart that connotation. Either that, or the dude clearly didn't have much forethought.

Some synonyms for sexuality include 'desire' 'passion' 'sexual urge' 'lust' 'sensuality', all of which have no implications or connotations of being bi-sexual and every implication about his overactive heterosexual labido. So Prince did give it thought imo, and bi-sexuality was not one of those thoughts.

.

And it can also be literal, "play" as defined: "engage in activity for enjoyment and recreation rather than a serious or practical purpose". Or it could also mean, "play" as in jam with. Or it could mean just having fun with someone, anyone, boy or girl, because you are so lonely that you just want someone around and it doesn't matter who.

Certainly. I am not arguing against that. I am merely proposing that either Prince intended the line to play with opaque sexual undertones (which is prominent throughout the bulk of his back catalogue, and likely the case here) or that it is just lazy writing.

On the whole, I agree with the author of the article. Unsure of the Sister lyric, but Prince is undeniably playing with bisexual or pan sexual imagery at this time (just look at the back cover). He wants us to think about it. I never thought he was anything other than straight, and fucking with us.

.

Also I don't agree with everyone who says hearing bisexual allusions is hearing "the worst" about Prince. The worst? Come on now, it's 2015. I can think of plenty worse things than being bi.

him being a JW or asking Wendy & lisa to stop being lesbians dosen't prove that he's not bisexual..

If you look at Larry Craig. He was a republican senator who acted anti-gay for many years in front of the public but turned out to be gay. and Prince has shown not to be a very honest person.. He claims to be a devoted JW yet he still cusses and brags on his last album and still writes songs about lust knowing that these things are all major sins in his religion..

Not saying Prince is bisexual but he still to this day does look, dress and act suspect for a lot of people to have this thought.

And the fact he acts funny about his past and tries to hide everything makes him look suspect as well.

He meant figuratively if you really listen to lyric. In almost every song he wants to be the top dog. He is not sharing a chick with another dude and if he is gay he would not be sharing his partner with any male or female. I can see him with two woman because of his ego and an obvious fascination with lesbians. Remember he dated Lisa so he may not have ever really been okay with Lisa and Wendy's relationship after all he lost out to a woman.

I have always felt he did not like being thought of as gay or bisexual and his anamosity brewed from being misunderstood and assumed so. I don't care what he chooses but to me it has always been obvious that he was all about the ladies.

No, that's something you made up. He said that P was homophobic. He then went on to speculate that P is so homophobic that he would stop doing gigs if they'd become sausage fests. You've got cause and effect in reverse.

I do not think P would stop performing or writing music if only dudes came to the shows (not sure on what planet this would happen) I think he has a preference for woman for monetary reasons and ego. Having a preferance does not make you homophobic.

Like Bart said in an earlier post, Prince 'saying' homophobic things is what makes him homophobic. For example, and there are many, on the Arsenio Hall Show interview, Arsenio asked Prince the following question:

Q. When is the last time you got mad, do you ever get angry?

A. (abbreviated) "Folks have a tendancy to want to bump into you, and they are usually dudes". Then he shook and made a face like he just saw/smelled something disgusting.

Homophobic? You bet. Are there probably a billion other things that make Prince mad? Yeah, but he chose this. For whatever reason, that night Prince really wanted a large audience to know he was not into guys.

Ever been to a live show and hear a guy yell out to Prince "I love you" - I was at a show once where he responded to one of those guys and said, in a super low voice, "uh, ok, yeah, I love you too bra" - many other times he will just make another face or gesture like fingers on a chalk board when he hears that, or just ignore it completely. Been to many many live shows, and these are always the typical recations.

The examples are too many to list, but to say Prince is not homophobic is like saying Elton John is straight as an arrow. Now I love Elton John's music, but I don't go around making stuff up in an effort to make him straight.

Some however will never be convinced regardless of the facts, and they will keep coming out with articles adding lyrics to Prince music to make him look bisexual in an effort to either push their own agendas, or, consequently, to bring to light their gross inability to hear and understand lyrics. I can absolutely understand why gay folks would want Prince to not be straight, it would bring them closer to the artist they love, even a few of my gay friends wish he was not straight, but no amount of lyrically chicanery or self delusion will ever make it happen.

I've misheard my share of Prince's lyrics(I'm in love with guy's, its the only way-Let's Pretend We're Married eek ), but i doubt the lyrics to Sister, is in that category. I always thought that part(OP) said, ah, sexuality.

As far as some of Prince's early lyrics and imagery? IMO, in the early days, he definitely came off as possibly being gay, or bi. I can only speak for myself, but i was young(around 12) when i first seen and heard Prince. Being that young, my mind thought of all kinds of crazy shit, in relation to Prince's lyrics, imagery, and to be honest, his, mine, and other peoples sexuality. And also coming from a city like San Francisco, where i(as a kid) had been exposed to all kinds of different lifestyles? That allowed me to become fascinated by Prince's freakishness(instead of being judgmental). Stuff like him riding that Pegasus, naked. The Dirty Mind pictures. The one, dick(1999 cover), and the inside jacket picture of him laying in the bed, ass showing, getting ready to paint with watercolors?? No wonder some people thought Prince was gay. Personally, up until around Purple Rain, i thought that he just might be. But even if he was, i never would have cared(besides being fascinated by the going against the grain, factor).

As for the truth? Who knows. I seriously doubt that Prince has ever had sex with someone of the same sex. I wouldn't be surprised to know that he's been attracted(physically or emotionally) to someone of the same sex, though.

Also, considering some of his early lyrics, imagery, and words. It would be fucked up if Prince was in fact, homophobic. That would lead me to believe that it all(his early period) was just a scam, or marketing ploy.

Rick James said a lot of stuff out of jealousy about Prince but everybody back then didn't take it seriously. There was no Internet yet only Right On and Rolling Stone magazine. His comments were made to Rolling Stone and Black people didn't read that magazine anyway. According to Teena he really admired Prince and bought his albums. the music spoke for itself

My personal theory about this is that Prince has experimented but for the most part is that he is straight. Bisexuality isn't always strictly 50/50, you can be attracted to both genders but still have more of a bias for one gender more than the other. I don't really know why it matters so much anyways.
