First thread....Let me make it a Lovesexy appreciation one

I've had this CD for almost a year now....but in my SOTT hysteria I was really put off by the chaos on my initial listen. So I kind of forgot about it, ended up collecting dust at the back of my shelf.

Just a couple weeks ago I decided I was probably ready to digest it having come off a few months tearing through bootlegs. Songs like Shockadelica, the I Wish U Heaven 12", La-La-La, He Hee He, stuff like that with a lot of stuff going on in them. Once I found myself starting to be able to comprehend the music in them I figured lemme throw on LS.

And wow, yo, this shit.....is unbelievabale. Front to back there's not a weak jam. Alphabet St. is just so cold, that groove is ridiculous and the guitar is real reminiscent of Sly (Color Me True in particular I think). Eye No might be up there with my favorite P tracks. Just...frenetic, infectious music. I don't understand how it avoids being corny. "Say, no!....Say, YES!" How it all works blows my mind, because it shouldn't.

The ballads are really gorgeous, the religious themes somehow avoid being pedantic and are actually inspiring. I Wish U Heaven is actually a really weird song when you think about it...from the way it's structured, to the register he sings....everything about it is weird. But its still great somehow.

Glam Slam and Dance On are awesome. I'd never be able to stomach those songs a year ago...now they get in me.

And Positivity...is it even a song....I don't know what's going on in it. It's a haunting track, but peppered with some real slick percussion that really makes it funky at the same time. And all the instruments come through very clear, throughout the whole album.

That's one of the best parts about it, all the grooves cut so deep. The guitar sits lovely in the mix. Those snares hit. The bass is monstrous (on Alphabet St. MY GOD....that shit simply gets my d hard, I don't know how else to put it lol). Very well produced.

It just sounds so fresh.

The WOO! on Alphabet St. I just love it so much. That clap-clap on the 2 and 3.

Prince's music is just so much more fun than other artists. I think that's why I listen. It's hard to describe to other people. You just have to listen to get it. It's so damn enjoyable.

masaba,

Welcome to the Dawn! As a fellow Prince fan, I had been reading these forums for years until just a few weeks ago, when I finally decided to create a username and show my appreciation for who I believe is the most talented musical artist to walk the face of this earth.

With that said, I was lucky enough to receive an advance promotional copy of Lovesexy on Vinyl, and I was also amazed by most every track. The ones that stand out to me are:

Dance On, Positivity, Eye No, and Alphabet St. I didn't really appreciate I Wish U Heaven until later, but now it's one of my favorites.

Welcome to the Org, I Wish U Heaven smile

Simply put, "Lovesexy" is the record I would take with me to a desert island.

In my book nothing can beat the love I have for it.

I kind of agree with Alex Han on his viewpoint with Lovesexy. Although it is a great album, it wasn't something new overall...

Every Prince album since Dirty Mind had a NEW sound to it... Lovesexy even though overall it is a great album, and has brilliant stand outs like Anna Stesia, there was nothing "NEW" brought to the table with that album. He kept evolving since Dirty Mind, Lovesexy was his pinnacle IMO and while some songs brought a new sound, the album OVERALL didn't. But I still feel Lovesexy is deff one of his top albums.

I don't know if "Lovesexy" has a NEW sound, but I don't care at all.

To me what it does matter is that "Lovesexy" has a UNIQUE sound.

Something that you can't find so fullfilled before or after in the entire P production.

UNIQUE. This is why I love "Lovesexy" and it is without any doubt my favourite record EVER.

I think every Prince album was unique, especially his 80's albums... But more important I think every album since Dirty Mind reinvented Prince's sound... Lovesexy was kind of the shift in which many Prince fans became divided, if that was his last "great" album or was it something we already "heard" before...

I can see your point, but there is something in "Lovesexy" that there's not in all other albums.

To say, I listened to it the more I listened to any albums in my life, and every new listening there is 1 or 2 details I never noticed before.

The complexity of sound, the musical inventions, the continuous travel between different approaches of sonority.... what can I say?

I listened last time two weeks ago, and I found myself enjoyin' it as it was released only days before, the same as in 1988 when I listened to it the first time.

I don't know how to explain, probably it's only me that I'm desperately in love with it.

Anyway, as I ever say, it's just matter of taste and personal experience.

I forgot to include it in the OP. Yes, fantastic song. One of my favorites on the tape. Got me singing "Love is God. God is Love. Girls and Boys love God above!"

Very moving song
