Like Bart said in an earlier post, Prince 'saying' homophobic things is what makes him homophobic. For example, and there are many, on the Arsenio Hall Show interview, Arsenio asked Prince the following question:

Q. When is the last time you got mad, do you ever get angry?

A. (abbreviated) "Folks have a tendancy to want to bump into you, and they are usually dudes". Then he shook and made a face like he just saw/smelled something disgusting.

Homophobic? You bet. Are there probably a billion other things that make Prince mad? Yeah, but he chose this. For whatever reason, that night Prince really wanted a large audience to know he was not into guys.

Eh, I'm not homophobic but I don't want guys brushing up against me either. I agree though that modern Prince is probably homophobic, especially from things he's said after he joined the cult. In the 80s though he didn't seem to have a problem with such things, and admitted in interviews he played with the bisexual image to stir up controversy (like kissing one of his male bandmates in a video).

I think people are putting a little too much weight on the lyrics, like the lyrics have to represent reality or something. I doubt he does say "bisexuality" in Sister, but even if he did the whole song is made up anyway. It's not like he really slept with his sister. And the bit in Annastesia about playing with boys or girls is obviously supposed to tantilate the listener a little, that was Prince's whole schtick in the 80s.

The only interview I think you can be referring to is the 1997 Vh1 to One interview with Chris Rock. When asked if his early 80s androgyny was an act or was he searching for a sexual identity, Prince said " I don't suppose I was seraching, I was just being who I was, being the true Gemini that I am. And there's many sides in that as well...and there was a little acting going on too (laughs)...we'd have a scene where I'd hug the bass player, he's a man and I'd kiss the keyboard player, she's a woman, we had some of that going on to but...it's rock and roll."

So though he admitted to playing up that image, he didn't say (at least in that interview) that he kissed one of his male bandmates in a video. Which interview did he say this in, and what video did he kiss a male bandmate in?

Oh yeah, that's the same video that features lots of story about XTC use, right...?

The sister in question was a half-sister, so it could have happened; but I think it was Dez Dickerson who said that everything Prince did was for publicity/controversy purposes. There was no heart-felt philosophy behind any of it.

It's only the religious angle that became more serious and true, until it finally got the better of him with the JWs.

This is not even true. In the early 80s he stole a boyfriend from my ex and used to hang at the gay bars in Minneapolis. Also, I used to be friends with his assistant, and Prince would hit on him AND his boyfriend at Paisley parties around the Gold/Come era.

And this author also seems to think that "When U Were Mine" the lyric "When he was there sleeping inbetween the 2 of us" indicates that the guy was there in actuality sleeping between the two of them, sort of a 3 way I suppose. He doesn't get that this song indicates Prince knew the girl was cheating on him, but didn't care, even when he knew the girl was thinking about the other guy (while she was sleeping with P). His interpretations of these songs are pretty far off imo. And he does sing, "she's the reason for my, uh (vocal noise), sexuality."

This. The writer (of the articles) would seem to be metaphorically challenged.

now some of yall know that DP, DVP and DAP werent the mass phenomenon back in the day when prince wrote this song.....sho nuff some kinky folks were still doing it tho.butt these days its kinda mainstream right?

...I aint sayin back in the day they were necessarily doing sum DP action but surely sexxy stufff like MFM MFF MMF ...

just sayin it dont have to be metaphorical-

-

i doubt he´s gay or bi tho...

see erik everhard and James Deen been doing DP shittt for some time now...

or the man of steel....

Lexington

steve holmes

all them tag teamin legends

rocco aint bi or gay either butt he sho nuff into dp

just like manuel ferrarra

-

and keep in mind that Prince is from minniesota...

you know what they say about those cold states up north...or even michigan...but more so about them cold ass states up north...

cold

but sleeping in between the 2 of us is pretty obvious

dude turned a blind eye to other dude

or dude went along with her kinky side tho he wasnt as kinky or into MFM

butt that dont make you bisexual.

ask James deen .

my roommate and partner in crime Bo and I we kinda tight so one day i ended up sexxin his girl on the couch while he was asleep so when he woke up he kinda chuckled ...shrugged it off and just joined us..now that dont make us gay or bi tho...twas aight...we boys still..kinda bonded even more plus his chick kinda opened up after that experience.....called it a liberating experience....she kinda chubby tho, like my man Bo but its aight...

also helped us keep warm in the colder season.

-

prince came up with some crazy metaphors tho later in his carrier...like when he wrote little red corvett. cuz I think that that song aint really about cars ´nahmean?

butt i think in this case his metaphor skills werent that well developed around the time dirty mind was released so he kinda went punk on our asses.

so no metaphors no bisexuality....its cool tho... I aint hatin

basically I hate U is when you were mine part II yall know it..

especially that remix

Ever been to a live show and hear a guy yell out to Prince "I love you" - I was at a show once where he responded to one of those guys and said, in a super low voice, "uh, ok, yeah, I love you too bra" - many other times he will just make another face or gesture like fingers on a chalk board when he hears that, or just ignore it completely. Been to many many live shows, and these are always the typical recations.

The examples are too many to list, but to say Prince is not homophobic is like saying Elton John is straight as an arrow. Now I love Elton John's music, but I don't go around making stuff up in an effort to make him straight.

Some however will never be convinced regardless of the facts, and they will keep coming out with articles adding lyrics to Prince music to make him look bisexual in an effort to either push their own agendas, or, consequently, to bring to light their gross inability to hear and understand lyrics. I can absolutely understand why gay folks would want Prince to not be straight, it would bring them closer to the artist they love, even a few of my gay friends wish he was not straight, but no amount of lyrically chicanery or self delusion will ever make it happen.

[Edited 10/11/15 7:30am]

1. Disliking when other guys can't respect personal space is not homophobic. The stereotype of most guys being boisterous/direspectful of personal space isn't so far-fetched. And Prince, being a small, very famous guy with a very interesting-in-the-21st-century hairstyle, is probably subject to a lot of guys who are bigger than him shoving around (even accidentally). Prince complaining about this doesn't make him homophobic lol. He could have picked something else, but letting people know that some don't respect his personal space, and that most happen to be guys, isn't anything wrong to say.

2. As for your second point about Prince's live responses to male fans, how does that make him homophobic? lol nobody owes anybody else an "I love you." If Prince is attracted to women and primarily saves the gushy shit for them, that's cool. He doesn't have to do the same for guys, and there's NOTHING homophobic about that. Most of what Prince does in concert is tongue-in-cheek anyways; he's been doing the "disgusted" face to both men and women since Sign O' the Times.

I understand what you're trying to say, but there's a million things more homophobic than what you listed. Not replying 'I love you' to another man or complaining about how some guys don't respect your personal space aren't part of that spectrum, imo.

I've always believed Prince was most likely gay and I say that as a straight guy who is just observing his behaviour. I mean, we're talking about a guy who wears makeup both on and off stage, often wears face glitter, has perfectly styled hair, who jealously guards his own privacy to the point of paranoia, whose public girlfriends and supposed flings with models and actresses looked about as convincing as MJ and Brooke Shields, whose had two short lived failed marriages and was then single for over a decade despite being able to sleep with any woman in the world. A man who feels more comfortable in the company of women to other men, who seems unusually uptight when faced with public displays of affection from other men. A man who subscribes to very outdated and bigoted views on homosexuality which are supposedly down to his religion, but as is often the case with homophobic religious types, is more than likely a sign of discomfort with his own repressed sexuality.

Prince makes Elton John look straight. But I wouldn't be surprised if he hadn't even admitted it to himself yet and will more than likely die a single, lonely closet case.

WOW
WOW

OK folks.
This is how you know someone's a little too fanatical about MJ. I mean, forget about the fact that the only woman who claimed to have had sex with MJ was Lisa Marie, whereas over a dozen women have talked about how much Prince loves women. MJ and Prince, sexually, aren't even in the same league and this is coming from someone who loves both almost equally. I understand if you think Prince is gay (hey, everyone's entitled to their opinion, and maybe you're on to something about being religious and repressed), but to say his flings with women seem 'unconvincing' is stretching it, wouldn't you say? LOL.
Personally, I look at the fact that so many women have confirmed that they had sex with him (I don't think anyone can deny he was a playboy), and despite so many negative and bitter accounts/stories about him not a single credible one has ever even hinted that he's anything but straight. JMHO.
