So, I'm listening now. Shut This Down is getting lots of comparison with My Name Is Prince--I assume this is based on vocals. But the difference is the original sounds strained, a little crazy, intense--because he's actually straining his voice. Here, it's just got an effect. He's not doing diddly himself.
Didn't expect to hear the Slave/No Place Like U drums today. |

I can guarantee you that I wouldn't be calling this a masterpiece even if it was an album by "D'Angelo and King Sausage (featuring Kate Upton licking King Sausage's balls)." And if my kids like it, well, I have only one kid and she's four months old. I expect anyone older than her to realize this album is horseshit.

How about instead of whining that the whole board isn't kissing Princes ass, post your impressions? Just saying it's great without posting why doesn't help your case when the majority of fans don't like the album. As far as I could see, those who don't like this album (myself included) are giving constructive criticism, instead of "THIS ALBUMZ SUCKZ!!! DEATH TO ZA WELTONZ!!" . Jesus, can't post anything negative about the guy without being called juvenile terms like "hater", or "old timer who only likes 80's Prince" by the usual suspects on here. Realize that this is the reason Prince is comfortable realeasing mediocre shit like this to the masses, like he doesn't already have enough yes men and feet kissers around him these days. It's getting ridiculous.
Most of the whining about the album content has been over the top. Its a entertaining album. Simple as. Im enjoying it. There is nothing on the album that annoys me. I have played it a few times now and I still like it. |

People on the Org are not the majority of his fans.
Common sense would indicate that when I said "majority of his fans", I mean the only major internet fan base of Prince left: the org. And, read this thread. It's safe to say that this album is getting a pretty negative reception.
Common sense would tell you that the negative posts here still does guarantee a sense that the "majority of his fans" dont like a song. There are tons of Org fans who dont post. How do they feel about it?
stop trying to speak for people just to add weight to your opinion. |

Yeah, I would agree. But the person I was replying to was strongly implying that people who didn't like this album were crazy and stuck in 1984 and said that me and my kids would like it if someone else's name was on the album. All of which is bullshit. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

I consider many of the protege albums to be Prince albums featuring (X) on vocals. By my own logic I have to consider this a Josh Welton album featuring Prince on vocals.

I've burnt pasta. Well it was spaghetti but technically its pasta.
Now you've confused me (which isn't hard before you say), what do you mean he's far away?
Sometimes you speak in riddles
I just meant that he would have had to drift off (take that however you want to) for such an amount of time that a pot full of boiling water dried up.
If we can bring spaghetti into this it can be quite easy to burn that if it's too long and you don't fully immerse it in the water, then the parts resting on the rim of the pan can often get all charred and nasty. Probably a rookie mistake, but definitely possible. Anyway this is what I've been reduced to talking about in this thread since I can't get Paypal working to get the free trial of Tidal working, and I can't find my wallet so I can't do it by card. Ah well ! Yes, using a saucepan instead of a pasta pot makes a world of difference. What? |

Not gona give impressions of all songs but i've liked what i heard so far.. It's most fun he's sounded in years.
Million $ Show is one of the catchiest songs he's done in years imo
Shut This Down is badass Prince
Mr Nelson got me pumped. I really like the tempo on it. It's like he's coming back to life
It's also interesting that Mr Nelson it's followed by
1000 X's and 0's and June which are different than the rest of the album and more classic Prince
It's as if something changed in Prince after Mr Nelson which leads us to the last 2 songs

Interesting how that's the only part you quoted from this largely negative review. You missed this one: "...sorely mismatched remixes trying too hard to be trendy."
Interesting how you don't see that I typed "not so positive" and didn't notice the NYT prevent copy and paste. I retyped their three word concluding assessment.
Not everything is an attempt at manipulation, it's not that serious.

Awesome. I love it when I enjoy a new Prince album. Sometimes I don't though. In this case, I really like one song, a couple of others are okay, and at least one or two could grow on me. Only listened to the samples. I refuse to pay for any streaming services. If I'm going to pay for music, I am keeping the music.
Having said that, the samples didn't excite me. They are only 30 secs so I don't have the entire sense of any song but it is always good to hear Prince's singing. The production sounds a little too modern for me but it also sounds incomplete. Something is missing. I feel like it sounds like that for teh sake of sounding like that.
I liked AOA alot but for this one I wish Prince had worked with a different producer considering how much it was hyped.
Prince, mate, you need someone to challenge you in many areas, only if you are trying to prove something. I look forward to the physical copy of the album. |

It has a modern sound which is obviously not going over well with the old people who are stuck in the past. It's contemporary with good melodies and a great feel. It's upbeat and energetic. Great job Prince and Josh.
Some of you old minded stuck in the past people need to stop comparing it to how much it sounds like his old shit. You're not even actually listening to the melodies grooves and sounds. You're just comparing it to how close it sounds to your favorite Prince era. It's 2015, for a modern 2015 album, this a good one. If this album was cut by a new young artist, they would be heralded as a genius.
For those of u waiting for the revolution reunion, and the remastered purple rain, keep waiting. You're stuck in the past. Prince is an actual person and he is not devolving for you "mental relics". Get used to the fact that he's not interested in staying stuck in the past musically.
For those that don't hate contemporary sounds with good grooves beats and melodies, Prince did the damn thang on this one. Very good album. not true here...when i listen to any music by anyone, regardless of era or genre, i expect to have some kind of physical or emotional or spiritual response or connection to the music...normally when i listen to any Prince album in his catalogue, those connections happen frequently and are sometimes overwhelming...this is the first Prince lp that i had little to no reaction to...youre right in a sense, that if this were a rihanna lp or justin bieber lp, it would be that hot shit by todays standards...i guess i just expected more from a renowned, proven genius like Prince...and by the pre-album release hype focusing so much on Welton's input, HE becomes an easy scapegoat...im still gonna listen to it and see what happens, but i just dont feel it yet |

It always takes me a while to digest but just a few points.
1- I like that Prince is taking on a more current sound and like the production for the most part. Few years ago, everyone complained everything sounded dated....I like the direction he is going.
2- I really don't like that we have 3 tracks that are basically pretty old. Give us the new stuff, we have this!
3- Switch Judith's vocals with Prince and have her backup!
4- Standouts for me are Shut this Down!, 1000 X & O, Ain't about to Stop and June
5- Mr. Nelson....pointless?
Feels like a Phase 2 is needed....not enough here. There's things I definitely like tho...just not enough material (especially with older tracks)
If he has one more album, perhaps two to release soon, that might explain why this one is not anything ambitious, just a couple of fun tracks and remixes in anticipation of the more serious, "hands -on" efforts. |
