You totally nailed it. I listen to every new Prince album once or twice and then basically forget about it. It's been this way for years. Nothing sticks except a song here and there. I still listen to loads of live shows from his entire career. Black Messiah on the other hand still blows me away after many listens. This new album sounds so contrived. I thought he was better than this.

I agree and after Baltimore, HitnRun is groovy in a mindless way. The Prince we knew is dead. Long live the Vault.

Just different flavors for different folks. He also released Indifference which seems to please some.
I'm not crazy about HitNRun but the tenor of the comments here are crassly juvenile -- don't have leg to stand on to speak about any kind of maturity.

He might be able to be resurrected.... or not. But what would it take to resurrect the genius within him? [Edited 9/7/15 20:47pm] ”The people that will end up defining ‘Hate Speech Laws’ are the very people you don’t want to define the Hate Speech Laws” — Jordan B Peterson

If Prince wants to do todays music and wants a producer he should hire Pharrell. Everything he does is gold and he would bring out the Prince that we love as he is probably the best producer for todays R&B/dance sound. [Edited 9/7/15 20:50pm]

Pain. I've made the comment before. Prince has reached the place in his life where he can't have his heart broken again, he's just indifferent. The Lion just got old and can still muster a growl sometimes but how many years has it been since he roared? That's why the Vault needs to be released 'as-is'. Prince, don't polish those screams of yesterday with your insight or feelings of today. Just... release it!

Just got to listen to the download. Skipped through the songs here at work. Short version: to little 'Prince' in there. Too few moments that are recognisable Prince. Too much 'production'. (why oh why does a vocal have to skip in a non-remix?) . Will have to listen a bit more at home to be firm.

Now last album people here were b'tching saying Prince will never have a hit again or be played on the radio and now that he most likely will, he's a sellout?
Damned if he does...Damned if he doesn't!

Well, in order for him to feel real pain, then there has to be real-ness in his life. Real relationships. Right now he's in Prince-world. Now a lot of people especially younger Prince fans (well except for me), says "he's free. he can do whatever he wants!". (which in a way is good) That's basically another way of saying "he doesn't have to worry about anything". And that's the problem. He's uninspired. Uninspired by real things and real issues. Now, he was inspired a bit with AOA because of the social media and digital age and etc. But now he has grown accustom to the internet and social media. Nothing is inspiring him and it shows. But going to realness will never happen because in a way, its hard for a star like him to experience all of that. So, he should release the remasters if he wants to release good quality music. ”The people that will end up defining ‘Hate Speech Laws’ are the very people you don’t want to define the Hate Speech Laws” — Jordan B Peterson

I like the album, however, Prince needs to stop trying to make music in an effort to expand his audience, and rather, just make music for himself. In my opinion, his greatest songs happen when he doesn't care about who the audience is. This is clearly an attempt to reach a younger demographic.
Prince is a genius, he is loaded, he has more success than anyone could dream of having, I am perplexed sometimes as to why that is not enough.
In my opinion, he needs to get back to basics, lock himself in the studio, alone, get rid of all the extraneous noise, and write some music without any intended audience in mind. This process is where truly great Prince music emerges from.

Nah. It's just annoying. But that isn't attacking anyone or attacking anyone personally for that matter. So that doesn't make it right to say things like that. Just ignore people, it's not that hard. Especially since this is the internet and all people have to do is not reply to their comments [Edited 9/7/15 21:24pm] ”The people that will end up defining ‘Hate Speech Laws’ are the very people you don’t want to define the Hate Speech Laws” — Jordan B Peterson

I believe he should do what he wants, of course, and I'm glad to have HitNRun and will buy the physical release. But my eye is on the Vault and hope he doesn't pull a George Lucas and re-imagine it. Strange but true, when Prince releases an average album (which I consider AOA & HitNRun to be) it makes me listen, deeper, to his earlier work. When his fire was a step ahead of his amazing talent.

Of course It's a personal attack. You could give "Master Piss" the same advice: Ignore comments that you don't like instead of posting childish smilies. [Edited 9/7/15 21:33pm]

As awful as this album is, I totally disagree. I don't think the problem has ever been lack of good material or that he's incapable of making good songs, it just seems that he often panders to the current mainstream audience. And today's pop music is an abomination. I feel like I could have pieced together at least 10 of his songs from recent times that would make a good, if not, great album. Of course, it would be subjective.

AMEN!! I was there too last nite and listening to it in the PP soundstage watching peeps reactions was the perfect experience and to add to this what I love about Prince is that he has inspired so many generations, bruno mars doing uptown funk etc and yet prince when he feels like it can even better mirror back at the millenials generation than they can themselves all this while burning pasta!!
