I think this album may draw a HARD LINE between the generational lines of Prince fandom.

-

I was at Paisley Park last night when they played this thing. This is a BIG generalization/observation but here is what I saw:

-

The 20-30somethings were digging it hard. The portion of the fanbase that grew up with Prince rapping will have no problem digesting this. Is he embracing "current" sounds?

Yes. He has always done this. HITnRUN is Prince through and through. He's taking trends and making them his, and spitting out something new, and unlike anything else that's being done in pop.

-

To me, HITnRUN is like Art Official Age's bigger, badder, more naughty/rowdy brother. I am really liking it.

It's fucking awesome. It's like an Oasis album - takes 4 or 5 listens but then will be your fave album for the next 3 days.

Romeoblu

I'm starting to really enjoy it. Best listened to with headphones.

Just love how hard Shut this Down and ain't about to stop hit. Both have some great bass playing.

After a couple listens I was thinking 6/7 now I'm more 7/8.

I just wish it was longer with a couple more songs we hadn't heard before.

Early day one song scores

million $ show 8. (wish it was a Prince vocal)
Shut this down 9. (album highlight)
Ain't about to stop 8
Like a Mack 7
This could be us 8 (appreciate it more in the context of the album)
Fallinlove2night 8
The x's Face 8
Hardrocklover 8
Mr Nelson 7
1000 hugs and kisses 7. ( this is growing on me. Really disappointed upon first listen.)
June 5 ( it's ok but a dull end to such a high energy album)

Bring on Phase 2.

If KCOOLMUSIQ enjoys this "masterpiece" made by Joshua Welton featuring Prince on vocals and guitar, well then let them lol

I AGREE WITH YOU 1Million%!

HITNRUN is a funky, essentric, electric and wild album! It's weird in way only PRINCE can do. Is he embrassing modern sounds? Yes. But Not the way every other artist or packaged artist does. He is creating a new sound that is far above the rest. Yes, he has always done this.

NO ONE can touch PRINCE. No One.

BlackandRising

I like this collection of songs. For the first time in a while, I listened to this album and could see myself groovin to some of this on the dancefloor. And I mean, Groovin'! I think this is kind of experimental; it's obviolsu taking a few dance tunes formulas and adding lots of Prince touches. I'm even thinking that these songs, especially Million $ Show, Shut This Down, Ain't About to Stop, and definitely, Like A Mack (my 5 year old was going wild on this one), are geared towards a younger crowd. For me it sort of hits a snag with the THis Could B Us remix...I hate this one. this and Fallinlove2Nite wholly disrupts the groove at this point. But it picks up again with a vengeance with X's Face, and I love it after that point.

June and 1000 X's and O's are very nice as the slower grooves on the album.

I thought I was going to hate this based hearing This Could B Us, but upon a few hearings, esecially today nonstop in the car, I think this is a great album.

Gah...the transition between HARDROCKLOVER and MR. NELSON. I haven't felt a jolt like that since I was rear-ended in a grocery store parking lot last year.

I first listened on my phone this morning and thought exactly the same. Tonight I've been listening through the Chrome browser and track to track is flowing much better.

Also prince & Joshua r fast becoming the new Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis of the twin cities. Everyone knows Jimmy is the main composer of the highly successful duo. With Terry adding the funk juices. It's the same arrangement here but MORE profound...It's a match made n purple heaven... giggle

At first glance this album comes across to me as more of a collection of odds and ends written while in the midst of their current tour, meant for showcasing Josh's production/beats.

Seeing the name of it, followed by "Phase 1", made me assume that right away.

However, "HardRockLover" is so brilliant to me, coupled with the greatness of AOA and Judith Hill's "Back In Time" — where Prince produced her brilliance instead of his — that I allowed myself to twist my own expectations.

I'm probably looking at this all wrongheaded in this very early stage and I know that there is still plenty left to absorb, but this doesn't initially come across as Prince's new beat, his "Way Back Home."

But that doesn't mean on a less profound level that there isn't still plenty to unfurl and enjoy.

"June" intrigued me the most upon first listen. Immediately replayed. Also got goosebumps hearing the bass playing in the fourth track (I think? Haven't sorted it all out yet with only two listens). Also was charmed by the pleasant sounding "1000 X's and O's."

Although I will add that for someone I don't know personally, I think Prince seems to have changed to the point where he rarely even needs to leave the room when the conversation turns to his salacious past. Youth has perhaps served him well, opened him up, made him less controlling.

This perhaps bodes extremely well for a future probably littered with dozens of new Prince records.

Yeah to me upon the first listen, it is more of a collection of things that maybe were intended for AOA, alot of voices and beats from that album are here, not to mention there is one remix, one song redone, but all in all the music is good, just not very album like, the way he spoke on it earlier was that it was some kind of masterpiece, but its more just a collection of songs that were good that came after the fact. Nothing really stands out to me yet as a great track though.

I like a lot of aspects in this album, but in my opinion, it could have done with a bit of restraint. On the one hand Josh needs to realise that he doesn't have to include EVERYTHING he can do in every song. And on the other hand, even if the whole idea behind this album was to shocase Josh's skills, there was no need for him to take responsibility for all the songs. Prince still is a great producer: it could have been more of a collaboration, as opposed to delegating on Josh almost completely.
Additionally I hate that two of the songs are remixes form AOA songs, and that we already had several of the other songs.
On a positive note, I actually quite like the general, feel of the album, the last two songs are beautiful, and I find the opening four quite strong. And then there is Hardrocklover, which so should be three minutes longer...

Most of it reminds me of those times when I'm out late on the weekend and I scan my car stereo to find something to listen to but can only find a bunch of loud, poorly mixed house/rap music, so I end up listening to Dixieland jazz on NPR.

I really like June, but I wish it was longer. That's about the best I can say. This could be my least favorite Prince album. Why is he releasing this with songs like Revelation and Stare in his arsenal?

And can anybody tell me why I can't space between paragraphs on here anymore? smile

Do not understand all the haters. HITnRUN is not that bad. It's different, it has courage, it plays with expectations. I like it at first listen. Let's wait and see how it works with time. Standout tracks for me: Shot this down and 1000 hugs and kisses. Those who shit on this track praising the original now are probably the same who shit on the original back in the 90ies claiming that it was the worst he's ever released, bla bla.
