I love the rawer feel. It has the warmth missing from so much of his newer tracks. It's just good to hear the amateurish thin tinny annoying sound from AOC is completely missing here.

The guitar is the selling point. He tries this time on his verse singing.

Verse originality is a biggie in pop.

Doesn't really have a chorus until the end. Odd.

I never thought of that, but you're right. Although "1999", "When Doves Cry", "If I WAs Your Girlfriend" and "Mountains" have pretty good lyrics off the top of my head.

.

Might make a good thread idea though since we seem to be derailing a bit. "Best Lyrics In a Released/Un-released Song" or something like that. Maybe just a "Best Lyrics" thread. Prince has written a lot of really great lyrics and I don't hold it against him that these aren't the greatest in the world because I like the song. A lot.

I don't think we disagree that much at all. My point was that Housequake and Blowing In the Wind are so different that you can't compare them. When you write about social issues, then, yes I do expect something like What's Going On. When you just want to have some fun, lyrics are less important. [Edited 7/2/15 9:54am]

Is "Rockhardlover" trying to be more than just a funk jam? It's a lot closer to "Housequake" than "Blowing in the Wind." I think it's a great song overall.

Like everyone else, I'm just waiting for the full version where Prince lets his guitar soar! headbang

Absolutely agree. The guitars are amazing! Love how the guitar groove penetrantes beyond your ears and into the emotional mind. The best music goes beyond the notes and effects your primordial emotions. Would love an extended instrumental.

i would say it's because this is more likely a demo and the finished version will be on the album

LOL no, AOA sounded way more like demos than this. AOC sounds like cheap quickly thrown together demos. You can hear more, effort went into this than breakfast can wait or any of the other crap on it.

For people who bitch about lyrics, I don't get it. Does anyone think "U Got the Look", "Let Me Feel U Up", "Sex" or even more respected tunes like "Raspberry Beret", "Let's Pretend We're Married" and "Housequake" are anyone's answer to "Blowin in the Wind" or "Maggie's Farm"? I love all the songs I listed but not because of the lyrics. Prince's lyrics have been super cheesy for a LONG time in a lot of cases.

I'll see your cheesy and raise you a hundalasiliah.

I am one of the most vocal critics of his lyrics (I'm a writer, so I listen closely to them) - and I am 100% fine with this song. I think the first verse is pretty terrific, in fact.

[Edited 7/2/15 10:01am]

I agree on the lyrics - some of his better ones of late. How he can go from the cringe worthy Baltimore to this is crazy.
.
Also agree with whoever said its like an extension of AOA. Especially the atmospheric tracks like Time.

Don't like the boring chord sequence at the beginning. Otherwise I think it's a cool track. A little bit more edgy than his usual stuff. Reminds me of songs like What's my name? or Boom.

My initial thought was that the song needed a hook. On reflection I think it's deliberate. The line about RnB having no place is telling IMO. A remix would have obvious club potential too. This track simmers with sexuality, it's blatant but not crude which is refreshing from the standard booty song. His royal badness is back, and he's still as bad.

I see that many of you are wildly enthusiastic, but I listened to it a couple of times and it just isn't doing much for me. shrug

.

Maybe, as suggested earlier, it's just a demo?

This song is stuck on repeat in my head especially the lines "she likes to party hard..."

Does anyone hear a tinge of Happy Birthday Mr Christian in this song???

I like it but his heart doesn't seem to be in it.

As if Prince is trying to sound like Prince. The spoken into sounds just like he did on the 1st few lines of Baltimore. Needs to be more raw. I wish his voice had the conviction and confidence of Peach on this track but I'm not hearing it.

Stilll like it and will buy.

I love the vocals. I complain a lot about his nasaly vocals but they sound sharp and perfectly recorded. He can't scream for shit anymore, but I can't fault him for that as he probably busted his vocal cords from all that screaming in his younger days

This song makes me make that face I used to make as a kid when I spun songs like "If I Was Your Girlfriend" and "Sexy Dancer" and "All The Critics Love U in NY" for the first time. It's like a fuck face but it's also a Prince face. So I'm gonna call it a Puck face. Thank you Prince for helping me find my Puck face again. #HARDROCKLOVER

I don't think this song is a masterpiece by any means, but I do really appreciate that it has ATMOSPHERE. That's rare for modern Prince songs. It's edgy. It's unique. Perhaps he's rediscovering his muse?

I Love this type of Prince song because it feels so real and raw like he's playing a duet with his guitar music guitar The guitar was playing what he wasn't saying. It feels powerful and whole, as if Prince was internalizing feelings, then he wrote it and put music to it, fast. I wouldn't mind if it was longer, but it's a gem like it is.
